We had a couple of hectic days in cold and wet London and it was great to be back. Catching up with friends, hot showers and being able to drink water straight from the tap and not clean our teeth with bottled water left us feeling very rejuvinated. We left London looking forward to sunshine in Morocco only to arrive in Marrakech to pouring rain and gale force winds! Our hotel overlooked the main square in the medina - Djemaa el-Fna. What a spectacle - everything you could ever imagine happens in this area snake charmers, monkeys trained to do back flips, traders selling freshly squeezed orange juice, snails, figs and dried apricots, sheep's heads and goats, fortune tellers and tea stalls. There was so much going on, we spent most of the time people watching ... read more

Asia » Sri Lanka » Central Province » Kandy February 12th 2010

We left Dalhousie after a big breakfast and headed to Kandy. Our guest house has a wonderful view of Kandy lake and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and was a great place to relax after a busy day with a pot of tea. We headed to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in time for the evening puja. The temple houses Sri Lanka's most important Buddhist relic - a tooth of Buddha. The tooth was said to be snatched from the flames of the Buddha's funeral pyre in 483 and smuggled into Sri Lanka during the 4th century. The heavily guarded room was opened at 6.30pm for the followers and tourists. The tooth itself is kept in a golden casket shaped like a dagoba which contains a series of six dagoba caskets of ... read more

We headed to Dalhousie to climb Adam's Peak. It poured with rain for most of the afternoon but luckily it stopped in the early evening. We were joined by Wolfgang and other people from Germany, Switzerland, Turkey and Poland. It makes us feel inadequate by not being able to speak any other languages, especially when talking with the Europeans at our guest house who could speak at least 3! Up at 2.30am for the walk up to Adam's Peak. This has been a pilgrimage sight in Sri Lanka for over 1000 years. It is a 7km walk with a steep path that turns into steps, at least 5200 of them. The path was completely illuminated, and is lined with tea shops all the way to the top. We stopped a couple of times for some sickly ... read more

We left Ella and caught the train to Haputale. It was only a 10km ride but we were in the observation carriage and it was a lovely view out the huge back window of the train, through the tea plantations and around the hills. From Haputale we jumped on the local bus to go to the Dambatenne Tea Factory. It is 11km out of Haputale and the rough road clings to the hills as it weaves around and passes through all the tea estates. Tea plants are grown as far as the eye can see. When we got to the factory, they were not giving any tours that day so we wandered around the estate and spoke to a couple of the tea pickers. The Tamil tea pickers, who are mainly women, move through the bushes, ... read more

We left Mirissa sunburnt and longing for cooler drier air. The rest of our trip is now in the hill country surrounded by fabulous peaks and tea plantations. Ella is a quaint town at the beginning of the hill country. It is surrounded by peaks and tea plantations. There is nothing else to do here apart from hill country walks and tea factory visits. We are staying at a lovely guesthouse recommended by Scott and Bianca. We visited the Uva Halpewaththa tea factory. It took about an hour and a half to walk and it was really hot but the walk was lovely, started by following the train tracks and then passing the fields and rice paddies. We had a tour of the tea factory and were shown all the different processes involved in the fermentation, ... read more

As if we could not be relaxed enough, we jumped on the train to Mirissa. The trains are so bumpy we almost felt sick. It was packed and incredibly hot. There was no respite from the heat despite the windows being open and fans on the ceiling down the isles. Plenty of hawkers selling everything from mandarins to fried prawns paraded up and down the isles. Mirissa is just along from Unawatuna which was devastated by the tsunami. This area was not affected so badly but it is sad to see that they have continued to build right on the water’s edge, which while beautiful will spell another disaster if something similar happens again. We stayed at Palm Villa - it is literally on the beach and the most beautiful stretch of coast. It truly is ... read more

Asia » Sri Lanka » Western Province » Colombo January 31st 2010

Welcome to Sri Lanka. We like this place already. It seems a little more organised and slightly less chaotic than India and the Sri Lankan people are so friendly. They have all heard of NZ thanks to Anchor butter and Shane Bond! Best of all it is quiet - the horn is only used when necessary! On arriving in Colombo it was not hard to notice the heavy security and check points. Sri Lanka held elections a couple of days before we arrived and the election results had been challenged by the opposition. A protest was planned for Wednesday but luckily we were leaving before that. There is still some uncertainty whether there will be a resurgence from the Tamil Tigers and the government in Colombo was still showing some caution - if that is the ... read more

Asia » India » Kerala » Kochi January 29th 2010

After an epic bus journey from Kumily to Kochi, around the hills, past tea plantations, canals, coconut palms and forests we finally arrived at Kochi but then had to catch a rickshaw, ferry and another rickshaw to our accommodation in Fort Cochin (Kochi is made up of a series of islands). It was worth all the travel, Fort Cochin is a laid back backwaters town with plenty of funky cafes, top class hotels (which we did not stay in!) and cantilevered Chinese fishing nets. These nets line the island and are huge. It takes at least four men to operate the counterweights. Unfortunately they are not used often because modern fishing techniques have become more profitable. We headed out to watch traditional Kathakali which is the dramatised version of a play stemmed from 2nd century. Traditionally ... read more

Asia » India » Kerala » Periyar National Park January 25th 2010

We caught a rough looking ferry from Alleppey to Kottayam before changing to a rough looking bus to get to Kumily - the main town in the mountains leading to the Periyar National Park. Riding these uncomfortable buses can be challenging at the best of times, but it was really hot, crowded and took 5 hours. Just as we got underway our bus driver hit an auto rickshaw - he did not seem worried at all, but the owner of the rickshaw, pretty much dragged him out of the bus! There was much yelling before a policeman came and a group of men became involved (none of which had anything to do with it or were there to witness it!) and with much yelling and hand waving by all we were finally on our way again. ... read more

Asia » India » Kerala » Alleppey January 22nd 2010

An 8 hour ferry ride from Kollam to Alleppey was the most relaxing day we have had. The sun was shinning and a nice cool breeze followed us all the way. There was nothing else to do but kick back with a good book and watch life in the backwaters go by. Alleppey was a sleepy, laid back town which was very refreshing considering where we were staying in Kollam. Our accommodation in Alleppey was the pick of the bunch, only four rooms, set far away from the road, with a great patio and fan where we spent most of the day chatting to our neighbours on their way to live in NZ. Alleppey had a lovely golden beach but the sea was rough and we decided not to brave the strong current. Instead we found ... read more
