| 5th March 2009 rija | very humbling indeed - From: I'm dreaming of a white Christmas just wanted to say that it has taken me a while to catch up with your blogs but I really enjoyed reading this one. Some of the stuff, like the fake socks and pan dulce (pao doce), brought back fond memories. I remember spending probably 2 hours in that huge super store in ciudad del este staring at all the american candy i hadn't seen in months. But then there are things like the utter destitution you witnessed that makes me feel like we're really not as far apart as geography says we are. here in india we have terms for differentiating the houses when we go out to survey the villages..."pacca" (houses made out of cement, brick or any other standard building materials),and "kutcha" (houses made of anything people can get their hands on including forest produces, random waste findings and anything else they can get their hands on. And think about how many houses like that we could construct with the crap that comes out of one garage cleaning. eesh. Anyway it was great reading your blog...i'm doing my best to keep up! please stay in touch ~rija |

| 10th January 2009 Matthew K | showering? - From: I'm dreaming of a white Christmas I've noticed that although you claim to be showering four times a day (four more than you often did in college), you seem to be wearing those blue shorts in every picture on here. Maybe a little less showering and a little more laundry is in order. |

| 1st January 2009 sheila | TEARS!!!! - From: I'm dreaming of a white Christmas Well, Matthew, your blog was very moving on a number of levels and it had me in tears - especially your encounter and description of the extreme povery you saw. Thank you for the details, and the challenge to always be appreciative of what we have, especially realizing that we live in such a wealthy society. Your dad also shed a tear - usually it is only Dickens that does that! We love you Mom |
| 27th December 2008 Alicia | God bless you Mateo Caldis! - From: Pilgrimage to Caacupé 2008 - Our Lady of the Miracles of Caacupé I finished reading your blog with joy and tears in my eyes. What a wonderful experience. It brought back memories when I uses to walk to Caacupe from Ypacarai. Yes, I'm Paraguayan living in Virginia USA and " estoy asombrada y feliz" for what you did. Who said miracles does not happen? Miracles do happen , You, coming all the way from the USA to Caacupe and tending your helping hands to completely strangers in a very difficult time , all in the name of our faith. Priceless! Keep up the good work! Gracias en nombre de Paraguay y que Viva la Virgen de los Milagros de Caacupe!! |
| 10th December 2008 Maggie | :-) - From: Pilgrimage to Caacupé 2008 - Our Lady of the Miracles of Caacupé Hi Caldis! Wow, what a beautiful post! It's so cool to read about this happening far far away... I love that our Church is universal like that! The Solmenity of the Immaculate Conception (a wonderful feast that celebrates Mary and her special role as Jesus' Mother) was on Monday and it's beautiful to hear about how other cultures celebrate the Blessed Mother. Yay! I'll continue to pray for you and your work in South America.... you are a rock star! |

It sounds like you've got a lot to accomplish. A little immaturity to add to Matt's comments about The Real Shing. | 22nd November 2008 Fr. Antonio Medeiros | Men!!! You will love that!!! - From: My first week as a Paraguasian (Paraguayan, Paraguaite...Not really sure what I am) Hi Matthew, I'm Fr. Antonio Medeiros. We don't know each other but I know very well this family who are hosting you and this people where you are living now. They are great. I'm from Brasil and I had the happiness of living and working in Villeta for almost 4 years. Now I'm in Sacramento - CA. I liked the photos of your blog because I could see some of them and also how some of them grew up. Sugestion: If you liked the empanadas, You need to try the delicious sandwich de milanesa in Tia Yiya's bar, certainly you'll love that. I couldn't find nothing like that here in USA. I think we'll met soon because in January, after 4 years, I'll be visiting Paraguay. God bless you. Fr. Antonio Medeiros just a little correction... Casi = almost. |
| 19th November 2008 Matthew K | crazy driver... drives like an animal - From: I was a healthy person up until this point of my life... I just read your novel. Four things came to mind... 1. Is driving the ambulance anything like driving a short bus (without the traffic laws)? If so, it sounds like a blast. 2. If they refer to your shingles as herpes, what do they use to refer to your real herpes? Anyways, sorry about The Shing. 3. If you're having trouble gaining weight, I would recommed trying this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EYZCZvV7WM It seems to work pretty well. 4. A serious note: impressive outlook in the last paragraph. I'm sure your helping the community in many ways. |

| 18th October 2008 Bruce, Elaine and Fam' | News from Cape Town - From: From American Futbolista to Paraguayan Heartthrob... Hola Hoesit? Muchos Grassy-Ass for your letter, Elaine, Tara, Terence, Bradford and Theiler are here in Cape Town for Jordan's 7th ..you guessed it..., BIRTHDAY PARTY...You were here in spirit, and we have just enjoyed reading about all your performances at EXPOS and Birthday Parties. Yes you did look pretty "happy" as you put it. I remember one such night when you were really happy with me too!!!!! Anyways Cape Town is getting hot too and we are enjoying hanging out together as a family. Keep on plugging at the Spanish and working hard. You will undoubtedly have spanish under your belt soon being so immersed in the culture and then you'll be styling! When you start dreaming or thinking in the language then you're proficient. Love from Oumi and Bruce! |
| 16th October 2008 Tom Best | Matt the Entertainer - From: From American Futbolista to Paraguayan Heartthrob... You know, many American artists struggle for years to leave the US and play for international audiences. It seems they could learn a thing or two from Matt "Lenny" Caldis. If you ever need a tour bus, you know who to call. |

| 30th September 2008 Dave Kopetsky | Shoulder - From: The life and times of an American Futbolista... Matt, sorry to hear about your shoulder. Having gone through many dislocations and surgery, know that it'll heal up in the near future and you won't even think about it. Kudos on getting the nurses cell phone number. Yes, that is rare, unless nurses feel a special 'connection' to their patients. Aaron Rodgers suffered the same shoulder separation against Tampa on Sunday, and he plans on playing this week against Atlanta...so suck it up. |
| 25th September 2008 mom (sheila) | laughter - From: The life and times of an American Futbolista... I don't think I have laughed so much as I did reading your most recent entry!! Thank you for the "pick-me-up"! Care package on the way soon! |
| 16th September 2008 Matt Caldis | - From: News and notes from the deep South...America, that is Dave, thank you for your correction about my position relative to the U.S., from now on I will use the phrase halfway down the world, in terms of the weight loss situation, I am always open to new, interesting suggestions...I hope you're recovering well from your baseball incident |
| 15th September 2008 Dave Kopetsky | Protein Supplement - From: News and notes from the deep South...America, that is Matt, I think I've found a solution for your weight loss situation and supplement needs. During my recent health "situation" where I was on (and still technically am supposed to be on) a liquid diet, I was given a few CASES of Ensure shakes. I didn't think anything of it, and regularly consumed Ensure, until I started getting sh%t from friends about having tons of Ensure shakes in my fridge. I guess Ensure shakes are "well known" as what elderly people drink to fulfill their dietary requirements or something? The person who gave me those Ensure shakes isn't from this country so he/she, like me, didn't know. But anyway...expect 1.25 cases of Ensure shakes in the mail. |
| 15th September 2008 Dave Kopetsky | 2 Questions - From: My first week as a Paraguasian (Paraguayan, Paraguaite...Not really sure what I am) Matt, I have 2 inquiries for you: #1. When travelling to Paraguayland, are you sure it's appropriate to say that you're halfway 'across' the world? Since Paraguay is pretty much directly south of us, wouldn't you say that you've travelled halfway 'down' the world due to the position of the earth's rotating axis? #2. Do you find it weird that even though Denver has a huge hispanic population, we've never celebrated la dia de los ninos here at The Children's Hospital? It was a trick question, everyday here at The Children's Hospital is la dia de los ninos!!! |
| 11th September 2008 Gus | Hola amigo. - From: News and notes from the deep South...America, that is Hey Matt, it sounds like you are having (sort of) a rough time, keep up the good spirit that comes across strongly in your blog, think of it as a temporary thing and value what you have in America that you don't have there. I'll love to see a picture of you (skinny) jkd. The blog is amazing keep it up . Our community is constantly praying for you. God Bless |
| 11th September 2008 Tom Best | - From: News and notes from the deep South...America, that is Great post, Matt. Speaking of protein...how's the stray dog population? Ok, not cool. Maybe the stray gato. Eh, scratch that too; I usually have mine with peanut butter. Not to make you miss this, but apparently everywhere outside the U.S. (europe included), peanut butter candy does not exist. Reese's? Now THAT would be a treat for you...I mean, the kids. Someone should send you some. Tom PS - How's my spanish?: Extraño por vuelto. Yo quiero probar que ambiente. |
| 10th September 2008 Matt Caldis | - From: News and notes from the deep South...America, that is Yeah, the hot sandwich maker is good, but there is no peanut butter to make the hot PB and Js with... |
| 10th September 2008 Leah | - From: News and notes from the deep South...America, that is Glad to hear you have a hot sandwich maker for making hot pb&j's! Now just change that orange to an apple... |

| 6th September 2008 Matt Caldis | In response to Leah´s comment - From: My first week as a Paraguasian (Paraguayan, Paraguaite...Not really sure what I am) I don´t think there is a way to listen to my radio show (which doesn´t exist right now) but if theres any way i´ll let you know, I´d love some call in commets from the north. Also, ways to get high without drugs: 1) Milk a cow 2) Chop wood 3) Sing a song more to come... |
| 5th September 2008 Leah | - From: My first week as a Paraguasian (Paraguayan, Paraguaite...Not really sure what I am) Is there anyway we can tune our radio to hear your show? I would listen to it religiously. :) Maybe I can find some brochures for you that can help you reach out to kids: 101 ways to get through puberty or 101 ways to have fun without getting high. |
| 30th August 2008 Matt Caldis | - From: My first week as a Paraguasian (Paraguayan, Paraguaite...Not really sure what I am) Unfortunately, there are no taco bells down here, but food on the street costs much less than a 79 center, I like to call them 25 or 50 centers |
| 28th August 2008 Bobby | - From: My first week as a Paraguasian (Paraguayan, Paraguaite...Not really sure what I am) Do they have 79 centers down there? |
