South America » Paraguay » Asunciòn » Bella Vista December 3rd 2012

Leaving Buenos Aires I went on a road trip that would have me constantly reaching for my passport like a child into his Christmas stocking as I journeyed through Argentina, Uruguay, Argentina again, Brazil, Paraguay and then returned to Argentina. First was the Argentinian town of Tigre, which sits on the delta of the Rio Plata, meaning one of the key attractions is a boat ride through the delta to explore some of the islands. I had met a local guy, Arturo, in the hostel and he recommended a great little restaurant that I should go to for lunch, and then the next day he was free and so he suggested we have a “tourist day” together. He was a really interesting guy: although he was born in Tigre, he had lived in Germany for many ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires November 12th 2012

Since my previous travels in South America over 6 years ago, I've had a desire to perfect my Spanish, become fluent and hopefully be able to use the language in life/work in the future. Things in London were great, but they had reached a point in life and work (and age!!) where if I wasn't going to seize the opportunity now to take 12 months out from everything to learn the language, then I never would. Ultimately, I thought that if I didn't do this I'd look back and regret it – and that was the deciding factor which made the final decision a lot easier. That's why I'm now following my dream and have 12 months or so to live, travel and learn in Spanish speaking countries. My previous trip in South America was done ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona September 11th 2012

September 2012 brought round my 30thbirthday, and I managed to convince 6 mates to spare the cash and the time to head out to Barcelona with me for a long weekend to celebrate. We'd moved a little more upmarket than previous trips, and after a lot of searching seemed to have found an amazing apartment complete with massive roof terrace that would do the trick. On arrival we decided to break up the walk from the metro terminal to the apartment with a quick beer – we'd certainly earned it (!). Thus, about 2 in the afternoon we were discussing as a group how we were in Spain now, and we needed to pace ourselves. People only go out around midnight so we couldn't go hard like English tourists and be tucked up in bed by ... read more

Asia » Sri Lanka » Southern Province » Galle April 15th 2012

I've always really enjoyed my cricket, attending tests, one-dayers and T20s whenever I got the opportunity. I've also always wanted to visit Sri Lanka, having heard great things about it from everyone that's been there. Therefore when I found out that England were touring Sri Lanka in March 2012, it sounded like the perfect combination!! A willing companion would be a bonus, and Chris Alger was keen too, as were a couple of the RCC team Brian and Mark, who came out for the first week to watch the cricket in Galle. Chris and I had a three week trip, of which week 1 would be watching the cricket and the next 2 weeks travelling through this amazing island. For the first time that I'd seen, the test match was scheduled to run from a Monday ... read more

Europe » Belgium » West Flanders » Bruges March 18th 2012

After Dan Gent made the big decision of asking Em to marry him, he then made a crazy request in asking me to be his best man. It was a request I was honoured to accept, and of course along with a host of surely important things that I'd have to do there was one task that stood head and shoulders above all the others – organising the stag do!! After a few early ideas were rejected (apparently a motorcycle trip through Vietnam is just TOO dangerous 6 weeks before a wedding!!), we settled on living life as rock stars for 3 and a half days by hiring a rock band tour bus to take us on a road trip to Amsterdam and Brugges!! The only slight snag was that we were pretending to be a ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Meribel March 10th 2012

Ski season 2012 saw me cram in 3 trips to the slopes, with Bulgaria, Switzerland and Meribel on the hit list. Bulgaria was the first trip of the season and Chris had kindly allowed Steve, James and I to join him in his apartment. The long transfer time from the airport meant that we arrived in the early hours, and I don't think that the “pastry roulette” that I played at a service station en-route was hugely appreciated at breakfast time the next day!! (The random meat fully encased in a pastry bun unbelievably got left alone for the whole trip!) We'd decided not to book board hire this time, knowing the expensive prices and long queues down at the main hire place. This time we simply wandered down the road and discovered our Utopia. An ... read more

North America » Mexico » Distrito Federal » Mexico City November 27th 2011

My main holiday of 2011 involved beating the November blues by heading off to sunny Mexico for a few weeks. My friend from uni, Julia, had settled in Mexico City with her boyfriend Ruben, and was always keen for people to come out and visit her (and even if she wasn't I kind of invited myself!!) which meant I had friends to stay with in Mexico City as a base for my exploration. I had previously visited D.F. and the Yucatan peninsula on my travels in 2005, so I was hoping to strike out to places new to the north and west. The general plan was to base myself in D.F. at the weeekends when Ruben and Julia were free, and head off during the week on road trips to see more of the country. By ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris April 10th 2011

Not naming any names (Mandi) but a conversation with a friend back in September or October time last year suggested how good it would be to run the Paris marathon. Although I've never had a running bone in my body and always thought the idea of running just for running's sake sounded incredibly boring, I tried a few runs in my lunch hour with a few of my colleagues and it turned out I actually quite liked it. Fancying a challenge, and the satisfaction of applying myself to such a big undertaking and (hopefully!!) succeeding, I duly signed up. Unfortunately around this time the friend who will remain nameless figured that 26.2 miles is kind of a long way and decided that signing up for a marathon wasn't for her! I started training in October, but ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Les Arcs March 27th 2011

Boys club was off again on its annual snowboarding trip, but this time the number of Basingstoke originals had dwindled and new recruits Bennett, Diamond and Tommy has swelled the ranks so we were back up to eight people. Given the dire snow reports from around Europe for the whole season, we'd left our booking late and gone for Les Arcs, a high altitude resort stretching up to well over 3,200m with decent snow conditions virtually guaranteed on these upper reaches. The chalet was the now required self catering option, but this time we'd gone for a chalet apartment type vibe, a self contained 8 person chalet within a much larger chalet building with shared communal facilities such as the sauna, steam and swimming pool (which were most welcome at the end of each day!!). Once ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » North-West » Gruyères February 25th 2011

February 2011 saw me somehow convince my parents to let me visit the chalet twice with friends. The first trip was a long weekend with work colleagues that would see us flying to Geneva and hiring a car. A stroke of luck had seen us upgraded to a top of the range people carrier rather than the estate that we had ordered – complete with rear facing video camera to help with parking and all kinds of sensors which we had great fun testing out!! The snow reports had been pretty shocking and this was borne out when we got there, with glorious sunshine and none of the local resorts being open. In the days and weeks approaching the trip I had tried to convince my colleagues that the poor snow reports were not an issue ... read more
