surfer dude
markus, this sounds great and i love the surfer picture. maybe the market wasnt as great as is could have been because it was off season? did you ever sleep in a hammock overnight (they really make my back hurt anyway). cant wait to see you, and you had better not cut off that beard until i see you. but i think that you probably will...

The little cat is an Ocelot, and the big rodent is a capybara. Not sure about the first mystery guy, and the lazy lookin one with the ringed tail might be a tree kangaroo, but it's driving me crazy because I know I've seen one before at some strange zoo/rare animal shop in new jersey.

Mark, I just read all of these. I had gone to your facebook to ask if you'll be in brooklyn in July, because I will be, and then remembered/was reminded that in fact you are entirely not there this month! In any event, I am so glad you're doing this! I love reading about such incredible traveling and it warms my heart and eases my spirit. Whenever they really start selling the rape-x I'll set off on the road too. Maybe shave my head while I'm at it. Keep having a beautiful time, and know that now, I'll be looking forward to your posts!

Woah that buggy looks wicked, like a beetle or something. Sandboarding sounds awesome, but I imagine there are no ski-lifts! Hard work walking back up each time, haha!

Sunsets
Hi Mark, I am just catching up to this now. Your comment about watching the sunset with tourists reminded me of the time outside of Xi'an waiting for the sunrise atop that mountain. How awful that was with all the litter and radio noise, and only for a cloud-covered sun! Still, I remember our travels fondly.

Jim- Its not only possible but its better for the islanders and provides for a much better experience. Staying with a host family is a great way to see a different style of living, doing it through a tour operator makes it a little more like disney land and less like real life.

Island visit
Found your visit interesting. I will be visiting the area next March 2011 and your long blog report provides me much needed details on what to expect if I go without booking thru an official agency tour.

yay!
OMG good update, happy to hear about it but the best part was "don't yuck my yum". how have you not told me that yet? its hilarious. there is one like that in Hebrew- roughly translates to "don't say ichs on food" sounds better in hebrew because ichs and food (ochel) both have out beloved ch sound. ANYWAY, i love the english one you just taught me and im going to use it all the time! you're a genius, as always! miss you
