Em Ma took us to the Summer Palace, the residence of the emperors during the hot Beijing summers. The most interesting part of the Summer Palace history is the story of the Dragon Lady. After her husband died, she ruled through her young son, and when he died, through her nephew. She wasn't a very nice lady, but she did have a lot of power. The Summer Palace is located around a lake shaped like a Bat. As we were near the lake, Em Ma asked" Do you know how banning fishing came about?" "Maybe because of over fishing, or maybe pollution in the lake?" I answered. "WHAT?????" said Em Ma, too polite to call me stupid. She then went on to describe a story of a young empress who was afraid that a concubine was ... read more

Right before landing in Beijing I thought, "What if the guide I booked over the internet was a fraud?" I felt like I was on an internet date! But fortunately our guide was wating at the Beijing Airport with a sign that said Ms. Marilyn and Ms. Jacqueline. She introduced herself as Em Ma --- Ma being the last name. She is lovely, but the first day it made our head hurt to listen all day. Her English is excellent, but the accept is work. Em Ma explained that the Chinese have recently made this time a national holiday. They are commerating a 200 BC. official who tried to tell the emperor to get ready for war, which he didn't do. Of course war came, the emperor lost and the official committed suicide. This offical was much ... read more

Arriving in Hong Kong I found Jacqui crabby and stressed after several days of unsuccessful meetings and a rather over successful conference demolishing her stock of books and journals in the first morning. Being the kind and helpful mother that I am, I suggested we go to tea to take away the stress from the last few day. We chose the RR66 (Revolving Restaurant 66), since it was recommended in the guidebook. Now our family has always been known to love a good cuppa, and I will happily admit there are several favorites that come to mind. The Houghton Tearoom always has a good selection of excellent tea and delicious eats, Betty's tearoom in York speaks for itself, RR66, however, with its 'all day pot' of thick coffee like appearance and average tea time spread was ... read more

"It's not so much a tea room as an orchard" said Jacqui, and she was so right. May is the perfect time to have tea among the poets and apple blossoms. The Orchard in Grantchester was a haunt for some of Cambridge most famous to enjoy the sun and fellowship after a brisk walk through the countryside. The establishment has a brochure that documents some of the gossipy things patrons said about each other. Virgina Woolf on Forster "Forster was never wholly at ease with women.". Bertrand Russell on Maynard Keynes "Keynes's intellect was the sharpest and clearest that I have ever known. When I argued with him, I felt that I took my life in my hands, and I seldom emerged without feeling something of a fool". It was a lovely afternoon. Also see pictures ... read more

We arrived in the UK on a historic day - election day. Gordon Brown's Labor Party was defeated by David Cameron's Conservative Government, but Cameron didn't get enough votes to rule. This means a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats. This is high drama. Not only that, the polling (voting) was so heavy that people were turned away from the polls at 10 PM, to quite the outrage. Meanwhile, we were enjoying a pint at Jaqui's Local. It is an interesting place, with pot belly pigs wandering the establishment. Her living room is small, but the Pub is large and friendly. Then we punted, a great sport in Cambridge. ... read more

I had so much fun writing a travel blog last time, that I would like to document our UK trip the same way. I usually publish very short paragraphs to document the main events, so you can follow along, if you choose. I have uploaded some local pictures to show where we are coming from --- the beautiful Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan. I am finishing up the packing, and the next entry will be from Cambridge, where we have a bed and breakfast while we visit with our daughter, Jacqui.... read more

Sadly, it was time to leave China. The Beijing airport is huge, clean, modern. While standing in line for baggage inspection, I hear, "Marilyn Clark?" What, is something wrong with my passport? Who is wanting me? It turns out it was Dave Gill, a colleague from my Cummins days who I haven't seen in 6 years! He is working on a new plant near Beijing. It trully is a small world. On the trip home we woke up just in time to see the sun rise over Mt. McKinley in Alaska. Awesome! We loved China and I hope Kim and Ryan end up there so I can visit again! And, Ben, you have to go climbing in Yangshou!... read more

Sara is back in town. Haiyen, Haihong's sister, and Michelle, Haihong's neice, brought her by train from tiefa so she can get used to us. She will travel back with Andrew, Nora, Mike and me to Chicago while Haihong comes the next day. She couldn't get on the same plane. Shopping was on the agenda today. When I was in the UK, my friend Jane would take me shopping. Somehow I ended up with a carful of bags, and Jane vicariously enjoyed the bargains through me. I feel a little like that here. ONe example, I got 10 silk tees and two pairs of linen trousers for $35. I am in shopper's heaven. The difference is that Haihong also buys! ... read more

Nora and Mike and I stayed on to shop in the "Fleece" Market, as Andrew called it with instructions on how to take a cab back to the Hilton. The first cabbie stopped, looked that the hotel business card funny, but responded when Mike showed him the hotel key. Unfortunately, he must have been new because he took us in the opposite direction to the older Hilton. The cab ride we thought would take 15 minutese took us an hour. I felt sorry for the cabbie, he didn't charge us anything. The city is amazing, we could be anywhere in the world. All the cars are new since no one had cars until 1998 or so and it has grown exponentially. The traffic is more organized here too, a product of the Olympics. THere are miles ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Great Wall of China June 30th 2009

Traveling back to Beijing, I finally hit the proverbial wall. Yesterday we visited the Great Wall, the Ming Tombs and the Summer Palace. I took some pictures of the wall which we experienced with about 2 million other tourists (okay, so I was a bit testy with all the pushing... and the fact it was 95 degrees). I didn't even take my camera out at the Ming Tombs and by the time we reached the summer palace, I found a bench and sent Nora and Mike ahead to enjoy the gardens. (We agreed we need to go back). Thank goodness we are traveling Andrew Style again, and a hot bath in the deepest bathtub I have seen and a wonderful Chilean red wine did the trick. I am ready to go again.... read more
