When one needs to travel a great distance, one hires a driver. Now, the trip between Om Ngaoi and Ba Noi is about three hours. When one hires a driver, the price is the price, whether for three hours or for the whole day. For that reason, it was decided that Thu’s grandfather and his wife would some with us in the morning and we would all go on a shopping excursion to Saigon before we had to make the long trip to Ba Noi’s in the evening. Our first stop upon reaching Saigon was for breakfast: pho. Yum! Then we drove around the city for a while – Saigon is massive, sprawling – and made it to An Dong, a very large shopping pavilion. It is similar in some regard to a flea market with ... read more

Bac Phuc told us that he would be at our rest home at 6AM to bring us to Ba Noi’s and so we were up early after the busy night of celebrating. We waited. And waited. And waited. Finally around 9AM we decided to break down and use Matthew’s phone to make a call. It took a while to get the phone to dial properly and connect, and when it finally did Thu teased her dad for forgetting. The aunts all gave him a hard time, too! In practically no time there were people there to collect us and take us to grandma’s. This time for breakfast we had noodles with little bits of shrimp and chives and dipped in fish sauce. The table also consumed a lot of pork, which smelled very good. Now, I ... read more

Bac Phuc (Thu’s dad), his wife, his brother, Chu Nga, and two cousins (whose names I never remember or keep straight – there are a lot of cousins) met us at the airport and picked us up late on the evening of July 20/21. Our flight landed at a little after 10PM, and then we had to get landing visas (not a problem since we had our paperwork and photos ready – I did find it funny that one guy seemed to be working the counter while three older people were “working” by reading the newspaper), go through passport control, get our luggage, and go through customs. Getting luggage can be a near death experience, it seems, with hoards of people pushing and pulling to reach their belongings, but somehow everyone seems to make it out ... read more

One of the best things about traveling to Vietnam is that we get to fly non-American airlines. For those of you who have not had the pleasure of such an experience, I am sincerely sorry. It is one of the (many) highlights of long plane travel. While I don’t pretend that sitting for hours and hours on end, trapped like so many chickens on a semi-truck headed to the slaughterhouse, is anything that could be classified as enjoyable, being fed several times and given a toothbrush, toothpaste, and “slippers” goes a long way toward creating a plane full of resigned passengers. On this particular trip to Vietnam, we are flying Korean Airlines. Three years ago we used Asiana Airlines, which is a Korean-company (and thus conversations can be confusing: “I like Korean airlines,” which obviously means ... read more

Snow, snow everywhere! I have been reading for what seems like forever (but in actuality is probably little over a week) about the snow in much of the world and the havoc it’s causing travelers. While we have seen remnants of snow in our walks around Northern New Mexico, and Matthew thought that he felt snowflakes during our hike in Kasha Katuwe, today was the first time that we saw it really snow. (And from talking with family and reading FB posts, it seems like it snowed back home today, too!) Thankfully we are dry enough here that even though the snow fell heavily for a while, nothing was sticking to the road and we were able to continue our last day of driving and touring as planned. Yet now as we sit in the airport ... read more

I reached the conclusion that New Mexico is one of the prettiest states in the nation because of its diverse landscape. Of course Oregon has oceans, mountains, high desert and valleys, so it still wins “Most Beautiful State” in the award show of my mind, but New Mexico is definitely a close runner-up. (Just wait, New Mexico: one day all the polar ice caps will melt and you, too, will have an ocean.) Today we drove from Santa Fe to the Rio Grande Gorge, then Taos and down the High Road through Chimayo (a more than a dozen other pueblos) back to Santa Fe. It was a gorgeous drive, and although the weather forecast threatened snow we enjoyed a lovely day and numerous sunbreaks. The Rio Grande Gorge starts south of Taos – at least that’s ... read more

Perhaps I was mistaken when I said yesterday that my boots were not made for walking. Or perhaps they were just made for hiking because today we hiked for several miles and then walked in town for a few miles and my feet were fine. Or perhaps it was the massage that I had halfway through the day…but I am getting ahead of myself in this story. This morning it was hard to get out of bed. Matthew was tired and reminded me that 6:30AM Santa Fe time was still 5:30 back home, and while he has no problem with getting up early on a vacation the whole idea of up before 6:00 was just a bit much. I agreed. After waking up every two hours because my back was in agony, I, too, was tired. ... read more

Breakfast at Casa Pacifica is a very cozy affair. The owner, Linda, lives with her two dogs (one looks like a small Portuguese water dog, maybe 45-50 pounds, and the other, about 25 pounds so still rather tiny, had an unknown father and a longhaired Chihuahua mother) in the apartment behind our suite. For breakfast in the winter months she feeds people at her dining room table. This morning she had coffee and fruit waiting for us and made eggs and toast as we chatted together. It was a very nice breakfast. She recommended three places to see while we are here: Bandelier National Monument (which I planned already for Tuesday), Ojo Caliente (a mineral springs place that probably won’t fit in the schedule), and Chimayo, a small pueblo that we’ll try to see on Tuesday ... read more

We began this Christmas like we have the past few years: waking up early, scrambling to make sure we’re packed and have our boarding passes, and then rushing to the airport. The drive on Christmas Day is lovely because so few people are on the roads. Even the freeway is quiet and we are one of maybe three cars out that early. This year we chose to fly Southwest. Given that Matthew and I are both airline snobs, it was a bit difficult to choose Southwest. While they used to be the cheapest flights we’ve found that is no longer the case, generally, and of course seats aren’t assigned and the planes are always old and dirty. But for this year, it turns out that was the best option to get to Santa Fe. Thankfully, Christmas ... read more

The weather is amazing here. One minute it can be warm and sunny, the next unprepared travelers can find themselves in the middle of a torrential downpour. We wore layers today and still were occasionally caught off-guard by sudden changes. But all in all we had a lovely day exploring Estoril and Cascais. The day dawned bright and beautiful. “It looks like it's going to be sunny!” Matthew announced while I was getting ready. By the time we switched places, I looked outside and said “Um, honey? It's pouring rain outside.” What to do? We went to have breakfast - and I finally broke down and paid the hotel clerk the euro to use the internet for a half-hour to post photos on the blog - and by the time we were done the rain passed ... read more
