Well, after being back in Australia for almost two years I am heading off on a shorter journey across parts of South East Asia. This time it will only be for a month, really starting in northern Thailand, then onto Laos and then Cambodia. Pity it can't be longer but I will make the most of it! :)

Happy reading!

Was up and in a tuk tuk by 6am this morning. Guy in hostel was rather rude too. Super friendly when I checked in and when I told him I needed to leave no later than 6am the next day he said it would be find to check out and pay then. I had thought it would be easier to pay up front given the early departure. I went down at about 5:45am, he was there, sitting at the counter, and when I walked up to check out, he told me that 'we don't open until 6, you'll have to wait otherwise I will never get any work done.' it was more the tone of what he said than the actual words. So flight from PP to KL was with Air Asia and left on time, ... read more

Early start with a pick up at 7:45am to get the bus to Phnom Penh. I think because I had booked it a few days in advance (rather than just one) I managed to get what I would deem a 'locals' seat. Number three, right at the front. Also the one position where I would likely go flying through the front window in the event of an accident. Lucky me! Most of the trip I spent with my eyes closed (not always sleeping though) or reading so as to avoid watching the road and the rapid overtaking on blind corners and the cars coming head on. Did watch the drivers speedo though, and he never seemed to get above 60km/h so even if we had been in an accident it wouldn't have been high speed! Arrived ... read more

Decided to mix things up this morning and head to Victory Beach for the day. I had been staying only a few minutes walk from the backpackers beach known as Occheuteal Beach which, while lovely, was a little overrun with people, hawkers and bars, caves and restaurants. Not wanting to put up with that for six hours, I jumped in a tuk tuk and went elsewhere. Victory Beach was definitely a good choice. Only a small number of restaurants, only two ladies (total) offering pedicures and massages, no kids selling stuff and significantly less tourists and people. Water also appeared cleaner too. So i spent the day there, had some lunch, some coconut, did some reading and swimming and even some napping. In the mid afternoon it started to drizzle and the sky turned rather dark, ... read more

My pick up for the island was at 7:30am so I was up early to grab some breakfast as I figured food would be more expensive out there. Was just checking out when the guy from P&R travel who I had booked the ticket with came in and told me that it was to rough and that the boat wouldn't be running today. Apparently it took them five hours to get back yesterday. Doh! Luckily my guesthouse had a vacancy for next two nights so I checked back in before wandering down to get a refund in the island trip. I did, and promptly booked myself in the Ream National Park day trip which left at 8am. Didn't want to spend another two full days in Sihanoukville, that wild be overkill. Quick dash back to guesthouse for ... read more

So, I had booked the midnight direct bus to Sihanoukville. I had attempted to buy a ticket for a normal bus rather than a sleeper bus hut was told it was booked out. Mini van picked me up just after 11pm and we headed to Paramount Angkor's bus station. It was then that the fun began. The bus that showed up was NOT a sleeper, and everyone getting on it, most of whom were tourists, had paid for a sleeper bus. After realizing that they weren't going to change buses, I just got on, a ittle annoyed and feeling ripped off. But some people were beyond annoyed and were yelling at the driver and other staff and refusing to get on. It also turned out not to be a direct bus, we would all have to ... read more

Day trip to Poipet with Carpets for Communities today. Met MarKo at e bus station a bit before 8am and it was about a three hour trip from there. On arrival we walked to the local office. On the way, Marko convinced me to buy sugar cane juice. They have long lengths of sugar cane, put some ice in a plastic bag, in goes the juice from the sugar cane, plastic bag has a straw inserted, then it is tied up. All for the tiny sum of about 25cents. Very sweet though. At the office we met Bunchoun, the office manager. Poipet is essentially a border town and where people cross into Thailand. The city itself didn't seem like much, although apparently it is known for its casinos, being that Thailand bans gambling. Needless to say ... read more

Early start, with the car we had booked arriving at 7:30am. Had breakfast again though since it was free. First stop was Banteay Sambre, which consists of a central temple with four wings, hall and two libraries. It is all within a moat, which the guidebook claimed was dry but which was far from it! Frpm there it was a drive to Banteay Srei, which was overcrowded with tourists but definitely one of the more spectacular ones as far as the carvings go. Apparently it has some of the finest stone carvings seen anywhere in the world and I don't doubt it. However, the temple itself was quite small in comparison. The restoration work, which was well documented in the visitors centre to the temple (even Angkor Wat doesn't have a visitors centre!) was itself quite ... read more

Late start this morning, with the tuk tuk organized for an 11am pick-up. First stop was the War Museum, also known as the Landmine Museum (depending on who you ask). The museum had a fairly extensive display of mines, mortars, guns and weapons, including a chopper and a Japanese aircraft. The money from entry fees goes to support victims of land mines and so there was the pictures showing people who had been injured which weren't pleasant. All the guides working there are also themselves a victim. From there it was onto the Roluos Temples. First up was Bakong, and funnily enough where I happened to run into Rito and Pascale, the Swiss couple from the Stray tour. I knew I would end up running into them somewhere along the way! Bakong was quite large, with ... read more

We had decided to leave at 7am this morning as we wanted to cram in as many temples as possible on day one. So after a fairly average breakfast (but included) it was off with Om (our tuk tuk driver, not sure how you would spell his name). First stop was, naturally Angkor Wat. It is widely believed to be the largest religious building in the word, and was definitely the most spectacular we saw throughout the day. We probably spent a good two hours there wandering through the many levels, the library, and bas-reliefs. The Wat is now thought to have been both a temple and mausoleum for one of the kings. Like the Egyptian temples, there is a lot of imagery and symbolism on the walls and ceilings. AW is also surrounded by a ... read more

Didn't get woken by any sort of animal this morning which made for a change! Up early though to get showered and grab some food before tuk tuk pick  at 8am to take me to my mini van transfer to Siem Reap. After picking me up the tuk tuk picked up two other girls - young lesbian couple from Brisbane. They were on the same bus as me and were quite chatty the whole way. Or other mini van companions were six french people and a Cambodian lady and her daughter. Roads very bumpy for first half and it took about three hours to get half way there before a short break. During the second half of the drive our driver floored it, hitting up to 150km/h on roads that really aren't made for those speeds. ... read more
