Manco - Al Wilson

Al Wilson Retired from a career this Spring and we are traveling to places my wife has never been. She is my "Montana Indian Princess", so; we are starting there.
I never tire of riding motorcycles so we will do a good bit of that on this first trip.

We stayed at Grand Island, NE. Sunday night and drove on to Columbia, MO. last night. We are heading to Chattanooga, TN. tomorrow night to stay with Mom and Dad for a night. My sister, Beth, is shopping for a new motorcycle and I am going with her tomorrow or Thursday to look at bikes. We plan to get home Thursday night. Donna and I miss the open spaces and big sky and feel cramped by the crowds, heavy traffic, and tall trees growing so close to the road. (Have I said that we will make this trip again?) Our trip [View Full Entry]

Saturday, July 12, 2008, Fort Collins, CO Leaving Rawlins today we plan to stop in Fort Collins, CO. A friend of our son (Megan Aaron) lives there and we want to see her before heading home. Fort Collins is, according to one report we heard recently, the second most popular place to live in the country. On the way we spotted a Wind Energy Farm. This was a huge facility that seemed to go on forever. Fort Collins is an interesting city where everyone seems to own a dog and a bicycle. They ride the one and drag the other everywhere [View Full Entry]

Friday, July 11, 2008 Driggs, WY to Rawlins, WY Today we start our trek home. Before leaving Teton Valley, we stop at the Wildlife Art Museum. While I am parking, Donna spots an eagle and a hawk in the distance. The hawk, lighter and quicker than the eagle, climbs above the eagle and dives into it repeatedly. The eagle fights off the hawk until the pair is far out of sight. She is very disappointed not to be able to capture the scene on film. The wildlife artwork is really amazing. There are winning examples of a bear decorating contest from [View Full Entry]

Wilson is a very small town at the base of the Grand Tetons and just south of the famous Jackson Hole and Teton Village. These are very commercialized areas we are not used to seeing so far on this trip. The Grand Tetons, unlike Yellowstone, is a range of mountains that is only [View Full Entry]

Entrance to Yellowstone Nationsl Park Established 1872
Driggs, ID, Tuesday, July 8, 2008 Our route today took us through the North Entrance of Yellowstone at Gardiner, MT. This is the front door of Yellowstone with the famous Entrance Arch dedicated by Teddy Roosevelt in 1903. Yellowstone National Park is the world's first National Park established in 1872 by an act of Congress. That, by the way, is four years before Custer's defeat at the Little Big Horn. Gardiner is a small, western town (population about 200) that is gateway to the Park. The town was established in 1883 when the Northern Pacific Railroad extended a new line to [View Full Entry]

Melrose, Twin Bridges Road
Melrose, Twin Bridges Road
This is the better section of road.
Billings, MT, Saturday, July 5, 2008 This morning’s breakfast at the Canyon Creek Ranch Lodge is a little sad for us since we are leaving soon. Karen has prepared another delicious meal and we relax and spend some time over coffee saying our goodbyes. After our ride to Melrose over the Forest Service road we turn to another 17 mile long dirt washboard for Twin Bridges. It is really rough and going is slow all the way to “Unnecessary Hill”, appropriately named as far as I can tell. The last half of the trip is only moderately less rough but scenic. July 1 - 5, 2008 Canyon Creek Ranch, Melrose, Montana Mike, Judy, Donna and, I drove to Canyon Creek Ranch from Billings on June 30th. The ride continued to afford us incredible vistas of country side none of us had seen before. We arrived at Canyon Creek Ranch for dinner and the week was off to a running start. We (Michael and I) are here for the July session of "The School of Fly Fishing". This is a four day school that begins with a day and a half of classroom education. Of the ten available student spots only our two [View Full Entry]

Sunday, June 29, 2008 After a really good breakfast, the four of us left this morning to explore Cody, Wyoming. We could not have anticipated as we turned south from I-90 toward Cody what this day would bring us. Before this day ends we will travel 360 miles and go places and see things and animals we could not have imagined before today. All of us were on sensory overload just trying to see everything long before the end of the day. Naps were out of the question as no one wanted to risk missing anything. The drive to Cody is [View Full Entry]
