Monday 21st Nov at 9.05pm Status: happy Body clock: fully adjusted Wins: short flight from Vegas that went without a hitch, despite having the usual sensation that this one was definitely was going to crash. Also, the hostel. Fails: none Achievements: awake past nine!!! I know, just hold me back!!! Chicken Parmesan and vanilla bean tea at Honey Honey, a cute place just a stroll across the road from my hostel. Adelaide Hostel is hidden down what would seem at first glance to be a fairly dodgy looking alley. It was dark when my shuttle dropped me off and the smell of slightly less than legal substances hit my nostrils. There are people from the hostel sat around in the alley smoking, chatting and just absorbing San Francisco. It's at this moment, after toying with the ... read more

Monday 21st Nov at 11.23am Status: Good Body clock: not on Vegas time, have gone to bed at normal hours and woken in time for breakfast every day. I must be the first? Wins: I haven't gambled once during my Vegas stay. Fails: see above. Achievements: see above Checked out of the hotel and left my bags with the bell desk and have come, for the last time, to my new favorite Starbucks, on the strip. It's a beautiful day and there's a fresh chill in the air. I've had an amazing time in Vegas, which was a failry pleasant surprise as I only really came here to see the Grand Canyon, which is top five on my bucket list. I got back from my Canyon Adventure on Saturday evening Once again, I find myself sad ... read more

Sunday 20th Nov at 7.33pm Ok so a (not so) quick recap of the last few days... Day 8 - Arrive in Las Vegas My flight took me to Milwaukee on the way to Vegas. I met some great people. Amy from Milwaukee and Stephen from Denver. They made an anxiety provoking 2 hour flight feel like a 30 minute easy ride. We talked the whole time. I heard all about places they'd been and their very grown up jobs. These people were the same age as me and they had really grown up jobs, in engineering and the world of finance! It made me feel like an abject failure. In fact each time anyone asks me what I do...I have no idea how to respond. I'm hoping that by the end of this trip, I'll ... read more

Weds 16th Nov at 10.34am Status: sick Wins: a good nights sleep Fails: sick Achievements: The White House, Washington Monument, the Air and Space Museum, Holocaust Museum, the Capitol building (at least from afar). It's my second full day in Washington DC but I'm going no where today! I caught a pretty horrible cold. And so I'm tucked up in bed watching TV and movies.  I arrived here on Monday 14th having said a sad goodbye to NYC. I decided to catch a yellow cab from the apartment to the greyhound station in New York, at the Port Authority near Times Square, thinking I would meet a real NYC cabbie. What I got instead was the strangest ride of my life. The strange little man talked about nothing but female genitalia and other parts of the ... read more

Sunday 13th Nov at 10.45pm Status: almost human Wins: sleep Fails: room mate is a weirdo! Achievements: Central Park Ok so after the weirdest nights sleep from 6pm to 11pm, dinner with my fellow guest at the apartment Isabelle who as far as I can tell fulfills a number a Jewish stereotypes. She is lovely and we shared my dinner at 1am. This was then followed by more sleep from 3am to 8am so I actually felt kinda human again this morning. I'd arranged to meet up with my friend James again but not till later so I wandered up to central park. There is a lot of hype about central park and I can honestly say it does not disappoint. It's like an oasis of (almost) calm amidst the chaos that is the streets of ... read more

Saturday 12th November 12 at 2.23am Status: content Body clock: screwed Ground Zero Memorial: fail International Photography Centre: win Checked items off list: photograph the Brooklyn bridge, grand central station and at least one photo of the empire state building. Bit of a rough day today, still tired from travelling and from going straight out to play last night when I arrived. I met up with an old friend who showed me that NYC is an easy place to get around and not terrifying at all. However, feeling alone whilst surrounded by, literally, hundreds of people all day long is a very strange sensation. There were those who were rude to me without cause and those who changed my day for the better with just a few words. I went to the international photography centre on ... read more

Ok, so I'm pretty sure that by now I should be excited to the point where I had become unbearable to those around me, constantly harping on about where I'm going, people I'll encounter, experiences I'll have, inexplicably amazingly wonderful adventures I'll be undertaking? So then, why is it that all I have is this overwhelming feeling of impending doom? Flying!! I hate flying!! What the hell am I doing? I keep repeating it to myself. What the hell am I doing embarking on an adventure that without the 'flying' bit would just be a lame drive up to heathrow and back home again? It's a necessity. Unfortunately. To make all of the good stuff real, the 'flying' bit inevitably has to happen. But the anxiety was almost so overwhelming last weekend that I almost panicked ... read more

Something occurred to me recently. I was driving through the New Forest to go to work at the Pottery and thinking about my travels and all the wonderful places that I hope to see and feel and experience. What occurred to me was this; all of those beautiful places must be home to someone? And I wondered to myself if they look upon those places with sheer wonderment as I know I will. Do they form a part of the ranks of people who every day discover something new and incredible in these landscapes? These ranks made up of countless travellers before me and countless more to come. Visitors in these lands so new and interesting that we must attempt to capture its very essence in a million photographs or a series of intensely descriptive journal ... read more
