Work in progress... Thursday 15th Dec Upon leaving Franz Joseph Tess, Jane, Hannah and Declan stay behind in hopes that the hike will go ahead today. The rest of us have an aching feeling of disappointment as we do not have the flexibility in our plans to choose and so we move on to Queenstown. Driving through countryside that is bursting full of huge lakes and hefty hills is breathtaking. We pass by Lake Wanaka and get a quick stop at Lake Hawea. The water is more blue than I have ever seen. There are many great things about travelling this way but as a photographer, my main bug bare is that you do not have any flexibility to stop where you want to. There have been so many wonderful places I would have loved to ... read more

This is a work in progress... Thursday 8th Dec Leaving the National Park, we made our way to Wellington. I've not heard great things about Wellington and I'm not particularly exciting so I'm really pleasantly surprised when we get there to find a buzzing, bustling (by NZ standards), but equally chilled city by the sea. We book into Base hostel in the centre and get a room on the 6h floor with fantastic views over the harbor. we leave tomorrow bright and early to catch the 7am ferry but I stay out drinking with new friends regardless. We go to a weird bar called 'Alice', down a dodgy back alley and feel like we're the only ones that know about this place as we are taken there by locals. We arrive and are led down a ... read more

Ok, so I've fallen off the radar a little of late but here's a little round up of recent events... Thursday 1st Dec Woke up at 6.30 panicking at the sound of a bus outside, feeling like I had missed the stray bus. I hadn't. It was late. Very late. I boarded around 8.30am after meeting a Canadian called Andrew outside of the hostel. As the bus was running late, I ran up Ponsonby Rdand grabbed an apple and blueberry giant muffin from the deli bakery which was delicious. The bus headed to the stray office for orientation and then off towards Thames. I faffed for an hour in the supermarket, completely forgetting that I still needed to get a New Zealand phone and a power converter so I ran in record time to the big red ... read more

Tuesday 6th Dec We leave the Marae early, again, and head to Rotorua. Some people have signed up for zorbing and a small number for skydiving. I wish I had it in me (and my bank account) to do a skydive but I chicken out and go for a visit to the geothermal village in Rotorua instead, finding myself with the same group as in the caves at Waitomo. A great surprise. Whakarewarewa is an incredible place. A tourist trap, granted, but also very interesting. It's an inhabited village that every 2-3m has active geysers and hot pools...some really hot pools that reach up to 340degrees Celsius. Steam rises up through the streets and swirls around the houses. We get to eat some corn, cooked in the hangi (hot pool oven). Unfortunately we didn't get to ... read more

Wednesday 30th Nov I arrive in Auckland airport around 10am feeling pretty damn good after my ten hour sominex induced coma and a fairly decent 'plane food' breakfast. I head to my hostel in Ponsonby which, as it turns out, is one of the nicest areas in Auckland. Good choice me. The hostel is great with lovely staff and free towels!! When you're traveling through hostels, it's the small pleasures that are the most comforting. After freaking out about visible dust thought the viewfinder on my camera, I head into the city to find a camera shop to get it cleaned up. Got there, turned out it was just on the mirror (not the sensor) and so no massive expenditure of money necessary. Em and Phil head up to meet me in Ponsonby. It was so ... read more

Sunday 27th Nov at 10.27pm Packed up my bags and started out on my epic journey along the Pacific coastal drive from Monterey to Lompoc. Eventually, I managed to figure out how to get the soft top down on the car...much to the amusement of the hotel staff. My first stop, Carmel by the Sea, was closer than expected at a massive 3 minutes down the road so I didn't get much use out the convertible but theres plenty more time for that. Carmel is a quaint, picturesque town set on the side of a hill running down to the Beach. It's streets are lined with shops selling craft items, art, antiques, generally very cute things and great cafes and restaurants. I grabbed some lunch the headed out of Carmel. Just as I was leaving, realized ... read more

Saturday 26th Nov at 5.48pm Got up early and grabbed breakfast then wandered through town and down to Fishermans Wharf where I just about managed to catch the boat for my Whale Watching trip. We were told that a grey whale had been spotted in the bay area and so we spent 30mins or so staring at the ocean looking intently for spray or disturbances of the water. The anticipation was too muc! Unfortunatley, there were none and so, disappointed, we headed out to sea. Shortly afterwards, we came across a pod of 20 or so Rizo Dolphins. They were fantastic, some had young, others played with kelp in their tails. After snapping a few hundred shots, we headed further out to sea. The swell was substancial, so much so that a guy on board asked ... read more

Friday 25th Nov at 8.35pm Got a shuttle bus to the airport and picked up my rental car, a Mitsubishi eclipse. It may not be the fastest, sexiest convertible in the world but in garish white it's my very cool ride from San Francisco to LA. I squeeze my oversized luggage into the cramped boot space and immediately get stumped by the automatic transmission. When I eventually work out how to get it out of 'Park' and into 'Drive' I'm off...very, very slowly. The attendant on the way out, after seeing smoke coming from the exhaustI gives me some very helpful advice. Apparently you only use the break when you need to? I guess I'm just used to using both feet when driving but in true American style they can add driving to the long list ... read more

Thursday 24th Nov Every year at the hostel, I'm told, that they get in a massive turkey and all the trimmings and everyone chips in something and everyone sits down together to celebrate Thanksgiving. However, for some reason the owner has decided not to do it this year. There's this funny little old woman who works and the hostel and spends much of her time wandering about, muttering to herself. It was from these ramblings that I gathered how upset the staff were about the lack of holiday spirit. And so, they had banded together and put in a few bits and pieces but hadn't managed to get a turkey. I had some vegetables that I donated to the cause and even toyed with the idea of getting a turkey but decided that I couldn't afford ... read more

Thursday 24th Nov at 1.14pm Today is Thanksgiving which is a strange holiday celebrating, as far as I can gather, the stealing of a continent from its native inhabitants. However, it is a very precious holiday for most Americans and signifies all that they have to be grateful for which is a lovely sentiment in anyone's book. It is a time for families to be together and enjoy each others company, a time for eating lots of great food and just being together. Although it is not a holiday I am familiar with, nor have I ever celebrated, I miss my family today and I miss Ben. I have had a fantastic few days in San Francisco and tomorrow comes my time to move on. It hasn't been so awe inspiring as vegas or as much ... read more
