Maggie Pettit - Maggie Pettit

I started this blog to keep my family and friends in the loop as I embarked on my year abroad studying in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico.
After gaining a decent readership, I am excited to re-initiate this blog with my adventures on Ometepe Island, Nicaragua.

I will leave on July 7th, 2008 at 12:55 am for Nicaragua and I have committed to spending 11 months there working as the Office Assistant for the Bainbridge-Ometepe Sister Islands Association (www.bosia.org). I am truly passionate about this opportunity because I have been a part of the Sister Islands relationship over the years as a delegate to Ometepe, a board member and a host family.

Please join me in this exciting year to come. I will probably write entries about every two weeks and try to include some photos. You can "subscribe" to the blog, which means you'll receive a notice whenever I add a new entry (make sure your email account will not block emails from webmaster@travelblog.org). Or you could just save the website and check back whenever you want. And I would absolutely love for anyone to leave "comments" or shoot me emails - I want to stay connected to everyone I care about :)

Hasta pronto,
Maggie

Buenos dias a tod@s, Well, this will be my final blog of this great adventure. Yesterday I printed my final paper and tomorrow I will do my presentation to the group. I will arrive back in Seattle on Wed May 23 in the evening. I'm going to relax for about a week and then I'll start my summer internship with Farestart (www.farestart.org). I'll be living with my friend Meredith in Greenwood. Looking forward to a sunny seattle summer- lots of hiking, reading, working at farestart, and enjoying time with friends and family. I want to thank all of you for [View Full Entry]

hello from maggie's world! (sorry cameron. yes, i did copy and paste this from the email I sent you yesterday. hope you'll forgive me) well, here i am in a town called Comitan. yep, i abandoned San Cristobal because it just wasnt working out there and here everything just seemed to fall into place. i am doing my 1 month independent study project with an organization called Educacion para la paz (Edupaz) and in particular about their Economia Solidaria program which gives microcredit loans to small cooperatives and groups. We have been traveling around the state of Oaxaca for the last 3 weeks. We were in Oaxaca city for the first week, then we went into the mountains to stay in a village called Conulalpam. After that we came back to the city for a couple days before taking off for the coast of Oaxaca, to a beach town called Mazunte. At this moment I am back in San Cristobal, in Tierra Adentro in fact (where the zapatista encuentro was). I arrived today by bus and unpacked my things in my old host family's house. Now begins the Independent [View Full Entry]

Hola todos y todas! So this time I thought i would mix things up a bit and let the photos do most of the talking(a.k.a. i am too lazy to write an entire journal entry). Dont be alarmed by the ski-masked indigenous people we're posing with, if you dont know too much about the Zapatistas, read more here they were very friendly and patient in answering all of our questions. We leave for Oaxaca on Friday and after we come back in april, we'll start our independent study projects! i'm thinking of doing my field study with a microcredit organization here [View Full Entry]

I have arrived in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico! Yes, I was supposed to be studying in Oaxaca, but we received word on Christmas eve that the program would be held in San Cristóbal this semester due to the situation in Oaxaca (which is actually resolving as the 8,000 police troops of the Policía Federal Preventiva begin to leave the city). Luckily, our program (School for International Training - SIT) is at least somewhat mobile because we are not connected to any particular university here; we have seminars specialized to theme of Mexico Grassroots Development and Social Change, [View Full Entry]
