"so I'll probably write in my notebook"
Hmm, would you be using an actual pen and paper/journal/faux leather thing? How quaint.. ;-) dadaa

oh you HAVE to watch So You Think You Can Dance when you get home. I'll watch the whole season again with you, for real! From the top twenty on there's some amazing performances...especially by Kupono, the gorgeous Hawaiin guy...wait til you see some of his numbers.

Who's the novelty?
Hi Mack: I got a chuckle reading about your concern that the parents might think you're treating their children as if they are a novelty. Clearly, you are the novelty with your blonde hair and fair skin!! It also seems lately as though you have been assimilating. Your blogs have definitely had a much more positive tone. I think the food has been more to your liking recently. I know how grumpy you can get when you're hungry. Only two more weeks in Africa. I think you will be sad when you leave. Love you, mom

Trés Bien !!!
Jambo ;-) Going back to an earlier comment I made here to you, in which I wondered what would be the most effective / personal venue por tu to affect change. A legal stage for international justice seems to be your direction, and I think that SO apropos for you. I can envision the esteemed counselor Mackenzie boring into the dastardly perpetrators of heinous crimes; so you, and so cool... ;-) And, I miss you, too, but these entries are part of my daily morning routine and make me :-) dadaa

If we were keeping an AIDS vaccine from the public then how would anyone know? It is funny how everyone always assumes the worst about America!

"that I actually ENJOY LEARNING."
Hola, dahlin' ;-) I can only hope that I have students like you in my class-room. Yes, *drabness* is, in fact, a real word, but certainly not applicable to your present environment. Enjoy it, warts and all, por favor? dadaa

"mission accomplished" ;-)
Buenos dias, dahlin' ;-) Re: "going for both a public policy masters...." >> How does one institute public policy? Activism? Politics? Law? By human nature, any society in any country is hesitant to accept change to centuries of traditional thinking, particularly in a third world situation (see W's *democracy* scheme for the Islamic world). It took us--the people of the Estados Unidos--8 years to FINALLY reject that obviously failing political *vision* by electing BO. And we are not a 3rd world country. There are centuries of indigenous thinking AND misguided Western Euro bungling with politically-based *map carving* in Africa to overcome. I so admire your fervor for the *one with the people* vision. Perhaps the time spent in academia to study the most effective way to institute that change is the best option, in conjunction with the *boots on the ground* approach of actually understanding the culture by being part of it, which is what you are currently doing. BRAVO! Such experience will be of immeasurable benefit to your studies. The rub is the actual acceptance of change by the people it is intended to help. Think of DWB (Doctors Without Borders). The practical application of that is the challenge. Look how difficult it has been to eliminate curry from your valued veggies/ rice diet--LOL. How did you finally achieve it? By finding the right person to ask and make the change. "One small step...." dadaa ;-)

I couldn't agree more with Gilli's comment. Step outside of your comfort zone...surrender to the experience and escape the trappings of your mind. You may return home completely transformed and free of your idiosyncratic burdens!! Love you and mish you!! Mom

My Dearest friend, My comment title is your first lesson in Hebrew (ahalan = hey) so that when you arrive at Ben Gurion National Airport you can feel a little more secure. I read what you write and I miss you, very very much, and I am so thrilled and so proud of you that you are physically living the the fantasy that you've been dreaming about since we were ten years old. It's funny...I see you're "working out", "doing squats", eating "carb-filled" meals, sleeping with "earplugs." My love, this is the beauty of travel. To step out of your comfort zone and go with the flow, become a traveler, a see-er, a believer, a romanticist, a doer. To fall asleep to the sound of the Tanzanian beat, to let yourself be woken up to the prayer call because fuck - it's a once is a fucking lifetime kind of thing. To sit outside, to watch the sunset, to let the mosquitoes feast on your white gourmet blood, to stay off facebook and to leave your ipod inside because nothing compares to the sounds of the wilderness. Africa is beauty in its sexiest, its rawest, its most earnest. There is no other place like it in the world. We will discuss in-depth when you get here. Am planning something breathtaking. Can't wait for you to arrive. Enjoy every minute, as i know you will. Love.

I agree Kathy. I love seeing her posts because it's a first hand account of the African experience. I look forward to your blogs and can not wait for my next Kiswahili lesson!
