We crawl off the bus after two days and two nights solid travel caked in filth and stinking to high heaven. Goa is notoriously expensive but we find a cheap little guest house in the center of Panjim and immediately disrobe and shower! Our Roman Catholic host later admits her reluctance to let us in due to our disheveled appearance but i think she was relieved to see we scrubbed up pretty well. Goa is very different to anywhere we have visited in India so far - it is clean, organised and hassle free. The locals drive new European cars down streets lined with palm trees and Mediterranean architecture. We both love this paradise and walk around carefree. It may not be 'real' India but it feels like a holiday and that is how we ... read more

Ajmer - Ahmedabad - Bombay - etc.. Up until this point we stayed North to avoid the heatwave in Southern India but we both felt it was time to put some serious miles down and hit the road. A public bus took as from Pushkar to Ajmer, then a grueling 18 hour train journey to Mumbai (Bombay). We had planned to stay in Mumbai for a few days but having seen the city and the cost of living there we decided to continue on what became an epic 2000km trip all the way to Goa, and in just two days. Journal excepts: Ness: "...We board a bus to Ajmer (Ru7) and spend it inadvertently entertaining the local women who can't keep their hands off my dreads. They seem to find it pretty funny and fascinating. Not ... read more

We arrive in Pushkar by deluxe bus this time as tickets were cheap and avoided the nearby city of Ajmer where we would have to change on a local bus. Brahma dropped a lotus flower on the earth and Pushkar appeared - so the legends tell, and then came a million tourists and turned it in to Brighton. Each and every dread-head looks to the man to his left blaming him for what Pushkar has become and each of them somehow in turn are not responsible. None the less the temples that crown the highest hilltops still retain some of the energy this holiest of towns became famous for - if you can brave the often treacherous climbs to see them. Up here far above the bazaars, ghats and cheap hotels that surround the holy lake, ... read more

We brave the five and a half hour journey from Agra on a cramped and crowded public bus for a mere Ru100 each. The deluxe (coach) bus was proving difficult to book and we wanted to do things Indian style. However, when we limped off at Jaipur bus station aching from head to foot the fresh air seemed like freedom after a lifetime’s internment. Ness mercifully slept (god knows how) for most of the journey. We stay at a hotel a little over our budget but the free bus station pickup saves us money and hassle with a rickshaw. If we eat cheap and only stay for the planned two nights, we can justify Ru550 a night. Budget accommodation is harder to find here. In our two days we spend most of our time wondering Jaipur’s ... read more

We are greeted outside the station by the usual screaming mob offering best hotels and best rickshaw prices, but beyond the maddened crowd we see a city quite different to Delhi. There is a better vibe here, less dirty, less desperate. Our time in Agra was challenging for the both of us because we both got very ill. First me with acute stomach pains and vomiting, then just as we thought we were free, Ness also falls prey to the Delhi Belly. We both feel that illness was inevitable on our budget so here was as good a place as any to brave it out. Our guesthouse was fairly clean with cooling fans, and stores were nearby for simple food and bottled water. Before moving on we still had an opportunity to visit the Taj Mahal ... read more

Landing in Delhi was an immediate culture shock and assault to the senses. We had no sleep on the long flight and were feeling fragile. None the less me managed to change some Rupees and negotiate a taxi to Paharganj - a well known backpacker haunt with the city's cheapest guest houses. We explore the area for a few days and attempt to acclimatise a little before moving on to Agra. The plan was to jump in at the deep end and leisurely swim to the shallows. The deep end it certainly was.. Just leaving the guesthouse is a challenge in itself as we are instantly assailed by touts and beggars so for the first day we spend most of our time on the rooftop with only short forays in to the whirling chaos of the ... read more
