Their new pool!
After stopping to pick up our cars at Joe and Felicia's, we got on the road. They were so nice to "store" our cars while we were gone. They gave each of the kids red Mount Gay Rum Figawi baseball caps from various past race years and the kids were delighted with them. I'll have to snap a picture of them wearing the hats. We got to see their stunning home again with their large backyard bird sanctuary and our favorite, the cat's digs (complete with entrance ramp and sliding door). We reluctantly left Hyannis at 1 pm! It was pouring [View Full Entry]

Birthday Cakes!
Happy to take a break from driving in rain, then fog
Eliza and Rebecca

We got off on the 10:35 a.m. ferry which they graciously allowed us to exchange our early tickets for! David Redding and Marion saw us off and though the ride was slightly choppier than the way over, we enjoyed the comfort of the cabin, our I-touches, Macbooks, pcs and books! [View Full Entry]

The ferry ride back

We got up and checked weather reports about the Tropical Storm Kyle that was heading our way! A reminder that we are actually on a small piece of land surrounded by water! It was raining harder on and off than we usually ever experience in Ohio. Quite an impressive display of water and still everything goes on pretty much as normal on Nantucket. It is just the getting on and off the island that gets tricky! And with five-star food, t.v., Internet, and beautiful furnishings, it's not a bad place to get stranded! We headed into the Atlantic Cafe for lunch: [View Full Entry]

Fog Island Cafe
Fog Island Cafe
All the Kids around the table at Fog Island, a nickname for Nantucket!
Thursday we ALL walked into town for breakfast at the Fog Island Cafe, one of the better known breakfast spots on Nantucket. Sam had a Fog Island Cafe t-shirt that he wore all the time! Our waitress was a Westerville South and OSU graduate! Amazing breakfast as expected! On the way home we stopped in at a little schoolhouse/church building that served as an African-American museum. We watched a video on early desegration efforts on Nantucket because of the favorable anti-slavery climate and Quaker roots that existed here. Frederick Douglas gave his FIRST public address to a racially mixed [View Full Entry]

Beach Chairs from our rental house shed
Wednesday was the day Jack planned for the beach because he read there was bad weather coming later in the week. Jack, Hannah, Isaac and Abe walked to the beach and Eliza and I drove there with beach chairs, a ball, a frisbee, and a shovel. We stayed a couple of hours. At lunchtime, we went to The Hen House for lunch. It is out by our house and fairly close to the beach as opposed to downtown. Jack walked there and met us. Isaac had another Fish and Chips! The boys watched the Academy-award winning "No Country for Old Men" [View Full Entry]

Walked here for breakfast!
Sunny and bright but also windy today. Early this morning, Jack, Isaac, and Abe and I walked into town. We are estimating it to be about a mile-long walk. We went to the Even Keel Cafe on Main Street. It was really tasty. Terrific oatmeal, juice, etc. I bought a pound of the Even Keel House Blend (Kenyan) beans to bring home for the next big family gathering! (It will need to be ground!) Jack said it was absolutely the best coffee he has ever tasted! We went to the Orange Street Video Store near the house and got "Maid of [View Full Entry]

We had a lot of laughs watching the show and clapping for our favorite nominees!
Had a great time watching the Emmy's! Monday was a little grayer. Hannah and Jack walked into town to check things out. The main part of town is just big enough to be interesting and small enough to be completely navigable on foot. Not to mention picturesque! I drove into town to meet them at the small grocery and drive their purchases back home. Jack and I paused in front of a live webcam and called everyone back home to log on and see us! We're saving a lot of money on gasoline here! You hardly need a car! Check out [View Full Entry]

Isn't it cute??
Jack and Hannah and I got up and walked "downtown." It is about twenty minutes into town following one winding street past beautiful homes densely settled and each one prettier than the next. As you get close to town, the streets are cobblestone, originally ballast from early ships. The homes are fabulous, and the nicest ones are often tied to the whaling industry owned by ship captains or others who made a fortune from the gamble of the long whaling expeditions. You would be at sea dealing with the blubber and oil on board the ship to transport it back in [View Full Entry]

We had beautiful weather for our ferry ride to Nantucket! Joe and Felicia graciously allowed us to leave both cars in their driveway and so we saw them before we left. They were heading golfing! Once on the island, I rented a four-door maroon Jeep much like Jack's (which he has not seen in a while because we rented it to James our Obama friend till the election). Jack is enjoying the concept of income from that deal, however! Before we departed, we ran into Barnes and Nobles at the mall and got the latest book in Isaac's Inheritance series "Brisinger" [View Full Entry]
