July 2nd 2012

At 3.30pm was my appointment with the Timeshare people and to this end I wanted to request the sale of my timeshare and implore them to help me to sell it. This duly done with a worst case scenario presented to me if I had to hold on to it, I headed back to my room to prepare for the Owners Cocktail evening tonight to be held inside as it was still raining intermittently with an expectation of further rain. I had no great expectation of meeting anyone in particular at the owners’ night, but knew they had wine there and I was hanging out for one, even without bubbles. The red they gave me was very mellow and thoroughly drinkable and while I stood like a dummy at the back I was aware of a ... read more

Life has settled down here at the Resort in Karon Beach, Phuket and one day is beginning to resemble another. Today though, is the first cloudy day I have seen since arriving here and therefore a good day to stay inside. So I have exercised for an hour by walking down the road, on pathways and the clean sandy beach, coming back dripping with perspiration and now need to wait until I am cool enough to go to breakfast. The sort of food I have chosen to eat at the resort for breakfast is fried rice, soy chicken and a range of fruit with my favourite being the pineapple, but watermelon is nice too and the cantaloupe…not sure what the fruit itself looks like but texture is similar to a not so crisp apple and actually ... read more

Phi Phi Island Today is the 25th June and it signifies that I am half way through this current journey to Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. There has been no rain here since I arrived on the 18th June with the local workers spending a lot of time watering gardens and shrubbery. The trip to Phi Phi Island started with a pick up by minivan at the resort by 7.45am. The harbour is on the other side of the island approximately 50 minutes away if there is not too much traffic. The company that does the trips to Phi Phi is extremely busy and this is not the season for tourists yet. They seem to have at least ten speed boats of the size that we left the harbour in, operating today. The trip out to the ... read more

Today I set the goal of taking some excess stuff, such as my boots, juggling balls, a skirt, hat, mosquito net and the like out of my bag and posting back to New Zealand as I have no room in my bag seeing as I packed for every eventuality. After my walk to Kata Beach at back that took just over an hour, I showered and breakfasted at the resort ensuring I had a balanced meal and enough to get me through to about 2pm then grabbed the box I had packed up the night before, put it into a black rubbish bag for ease of carrying and headed off to catch the local bus I thought. Actually, I was approached as you are, by the local taxi drivers and it seemed that to travel the ... read more

Part Two Day 2 To start the second part of my journey off I rose early, breakfasted with and said goodbye to the group, caught the ferry to Surrtthani and bussed to Phuket. The journey in the bus took seven or eight hours. Much longer than I had expected! We arrived at the depot at 6.45pm after having left the accommodation on Koh Samui at 8.30 that morning. On board were a couple of Australian guys who are in the air force and on holidays. I chatted to Nathan for a while and we talked about our plans. He was really keen to be able to save enough money to spend 5-6months travelling. I think he had the bug. In return he asked me what I was up to and I gave him a sanitized version ... read more

Day 20 and 21 We arrived on Koh Tao by ferry, a speedier boat than the last with very comfortable seating and air conditioning in a boat that would have held maybe 200 people. The trip was one and a half hours but otherwise quite uneventful. Our accommodation this time was only 10 minutes from the port so we were ensconced in our rooms by just after midmorning. The day was ours. I changed into my lovely pink togs and headed for the resort pool as the beach was quite littered with longboats with people coming in and out on them. Also the sea was quite choppy and there was a strong breeze coming off the sea. The pool was considerably colder than anywhere else so definitely the place to be. Later on in the day ... read more

Day 18 and 19 It started early. Tonight about 7.30pm, we leave for Suratthani which is a 12 hour overnight train ride south from Bangkok. We will then take a one and half hour bus ride to the Donsak Pier and a ferry trip of two and half hours to Koh Pa Ngan which will mean yet another trip of about 45 minutes at the island until we get to our secluded, beautiful beach and bungalow accommodation. Yes!!!! Today has been a chance to get to know the other members of the group and so to do that we headed off on two boat trips used by the public, down the river to the Temple of Dawn. It is a combined temple with the Hindu and Buddhist it seems as it has a long cultural history. ... read more

Chiang Mai is a lovely city to visit as it does not have the tourist hype that you find in places like Bangkok. There are still the lovely arrays of markets with a wide variety of articles that are handmade or copied from originals. The food is a little different here, but most Thai dishes are available as well as Burger King, McDonalds, Starbucks and KFC. On our last night in Chaing Mai Harold and I opted for Burger King. This is the only “home” meal I have had the whole time. It was nice to have something much more familiar. Earlier in the afternoon we had taken our washing in to one of the local laundries. The cost was 30baht per kilo so about $1.20. After dropping it off I decided to explore a bit ... read more

Days 12, 13 and 14 Yes! I am really unsure of the days now, but did figure it out that it is Thursday. The trekking in the bush would make you quite envious Robert. It took me a while to figure out why it all felt so surreal and gloriously familiar and today I realised it was because of the amazing times I had in my 20’s and 30’s tramping in the bush and staying out in the wops with few amenities and having to make do. Well that will give you an indication of how it felt for us except that there were some very definite differences. The heat was our biggest enemy. It took your breath away and the perspiration just ran from my body. In fact I had a pee at 11am on ... read more

Day 11 Today I decided to spend a few moments on reflection. Such as did I make the right choice to come on an Intrepid? How does one translate the experiences I am having into a meaningful context for readers? I certainly feel that I am actually a real tourist who has had the opportunities presented by the Intrepid people that one would never have had an opportunity to experience otherwise. The places we have visited would have been fairly well vetted to make them a meaningful experience and they are not in a city or town but in the out of the way places. Maybe a veteran traveller would be able to find these places but I am really happy that I made the choice to travel so that I got to experience these places ... read more
