| 9th December 2008 Lyn | One Day Left... - From: The Aquarium... ... and we're looking forward to seeing you home! Make sure that you keep something warm with you on the plane - could be cool air-conditioning and England is DEFINITELY air-cooled at present!! Hard frosts overnight and not much above freezing during the day - and that's for the rest of the week. I'll send a comforter down with Chauffeur Dad. Take care and have a safe trip back. Much love, Lyn xx |
| 2nd December 2008 Lyn | Matters arising... - From: Normality... Good to hear that you are enjoying Singapore, after your initial misgivings. Need a travelogue of what to see and do there, if/when we make it out in that direction. Keep an eye on the situation before you head back to Bangkok: we've heard news today that the Prime Minister is leaving office and that 80 planes were to be allowed to leave, so the ball may start rolling but, presumably, it will take a while to get back to normal and get the thousands of currently stranded tourists out. Many were reported to be heading for KL and Singapore via regional Thai airports, in an attempt to get home. May be better to abandon some of your belongings and leave safely and on time than to find yourself stranded in Bangkok - but things could change quite quickly, I guess. Good luck! Yes! We did have half an hour's flurry of real snow this morning, after a very pretty pink sky and a frosty night. Blue sky and sunshine now, so the snow's disappeared already. We had a super day on Sunday - Open House with fair trade stalls. The place was packed! Reckon we had about 70 people - fed and watered them - Grandma entertained - and they spent loadsa money! So well worth all the effort. Take care. Much love and looking forward to seeing you very soon! Lyn xxx |
| 27th November 2008 Lyd | sharks - From: WOWSA The sharks weren't really the 'jaws' sharks, probably 1m-1'5m ish, http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media/50/38250-004-EA9EA4DA.jpg ....i didn't see the black tip sharks which are similar size but you can sing the jaws theme tune to- these sharks avoid me like the plague- people snorkelling see these. Its weird being in the water rather than kayaking/snorkelling, you sort of feel at one with the creatures in the water, just an observer to there life...its weird to explain how it feels down there. I finally heard the news about Bangkok, it doesn't sound good, hopefully they won't do Phuket tomorrow otherwise that would be a pain indeed...the news about India is really bad too...not good... Speak soon :) xxxx |
| 25th November 2008 Lyn | Congratulations! - From: WOWSA Splendid news, Lydia! So glad that you enjoyed it all and succeeded in completing your advanced course. And how big were your sharks? Was it scary as well as exciting? We were disconcerted by tiny (2ft) ones when we were kayaking in 3ft of water in the Florida Keys. You know they're little; you know that they are harmless but, nevertheless, when you see that fin sticking up and moving soundlessly through the water, you play THAT soundtrack through your head over and over again... Take care and enjoy the rest of your trip. Much love, Lyn xxx |

| 13th November 2008 Lyd | more memories... - From: The Full Moon Party! After a 'productive' day...i have had joyful memories...Travellers are truelly nice people... as soon as i arrive at the full moon party queuing up at the bar and a girl offers me a drink from her bucket...god knows who she was...also told me to have a good night and went off dancing with her bucket lol. This was the beginning of many such offers of buckets from the New Zealanders i was dancing with...got to love the buckets! xxx |
| 11th November 2008 Grandma | Thanks - From: Another bus ride...i love them really! Thanks for your card - it arrived today - Tuesday - and thanks for all your blogs -very interesting and amusing -though your dad can almost equal you!!!! Sorry about your rain- hope it dries up - its chilly here but dry today!!! Have a great Full Moon Festival and don't howl too loud!!! Love Grandma |
| 10th November 2008 Sarah & Gav | - From: Another bus ride...i love them really! RAIN??? ITS 6 DEGRESS C HERE WITH ICY RAIN :( I dont like the cold!! glad your having fun :) hope the full moon party is good xxx |
| 10th November 2008 Lyn | Don't whinge to us about hot rain... - From: Another bus ride...i love them really! Some people gotta a nerve, whingeing about hot rain... We've got floods here, too, and our rain's COLD, COLD and COLD !!!! 4 degrees C this morning and torrential rain, plus strong winds. Now I've got that off my chest, I can talk about happier things. I don't suppose you recognise Koh Samui now? Do you remember that we subjected you to pretty and quaint traditional Thai bungalows on stilts in an even prettier garden, right on the beach? There was a beach restaurant under a thatched roof (where we got bitten well, in our innocence and naivety) and a raised deck with roof, where Dad spent all his time having his damaged back massaged. Oooh! and, of course, you spent hours there with several Thai women having beaded plaits put into your very long hair. We then made the mistake of taking you down the road to a white marble(?) resort hotel, which made you both green with envy and led us to the disastrous error of promising 'a proper resort' when we reached the mainland. Hence 'MT Resort', when we couldn't find the planned one. Enjoy the Full Moon Party - carefully - with or without added precipitation. Much love from the famous ones (yes, we were clearly visible behind the judges on Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday and Sunday!) Lyn, Dad and Joan xxx |
| 5th November 2008 G'dad | Motorbikes - From: Easy rider tour, Vietnam- Phnom Penh, Cambodia- Long blog! Lyn's motor bike rides were from a more recent time than Grandma's and mine. We had a Royal Enfield 350cc bike with no rear springing - it hadn't been invented then. It was only when G'ma was very pregnant that we afforded the luxury of a sidecar for her and that wasn't much better. It interfered with the steering so that on occasions we could only turn right. I'm glad you are enjoying your many experiences. Have the locals reacted to the election of Obama in the USA? Love G'ma and G'dad |
| 3rd November 2008 Lyn and Joan | - From: Easy rider tour, Vietnam- Phnom Penh, Cambodia- Long blog! We've really enjoyed reading today's blog; we sat in the lounge enjoying our lunch and trying to ignore the heavy noise of drilling, banging and demolition going on in the background, while we immersed ourselves in Vietnam and Cambodia! Your Easy Rider trip sounds terrific - although I'm not convinced about the non-numb bum. My memory of riding long-distance in England, Scotland and Wales is of a VERY numb bum!! Your experiences along the way sound really interesting - and I'll put home stays on our 'to do'list for when we go back that way. I do hope that you enjoy Siem Reap and Angkor Wat - yes, it IS worth getting up at an absurd hour to see the sunrise. Then get a bike and tour around at the same eye-level as the locals. Don't think that we mentioned... we went to see a shadow puppet show (with dinner) while we were in Siem Reap - you would probably enjoy that, too, if you have time and opportunity. Also, we went to see the craft school that trains people so that they can make a living back in their home village - and the landmine museum is definitely worth an hour of your time. It really gives some understanding of how terrible and destructive landmines are. Hope the weather is improving for you. Take care and enjoy. Much love, Joan and Lyn (and Dad, too, of course!) xxx :() |
| 27th October 2008 Martin | Easy Rider ! - From: Last day in Hoi An Hi Lydia Wow, sounds great, hope the weather is kind and not too wet. Should certainly give you an opportunity to see things from a different perspective of a coach. Cant see us copying you, will let you trailblaze on behalf of us older wimps. Dad |
| 27th October 2008 Lyd | bikinis and weather! - From: Hoi An- 2nd day...not so touristy... The bikini- well its just like a bikini but it fits, one black and one orange and yellow stripy sort of colours...they both fit lovely...not the best made but with i decided to not spend too much on them as generally clothes get used and abused as i am travelling- life on the road is not easy for clothes lol. Yup, i have seen the Japanese Bridge- when i was on the phone to dad i was standing by it watching and trying to photograph some weird fishing skill but alas i missed it- oh well its in my mind which is all that counts- i never was a photographer. The bikini will now wait till i get back to Thailand, I have to admit it was rather chilly here when we were walking back in the rain last night, to be honest though its not that bad here in Hoi An, the weather has been kind to us. It feels a lot stickier here in Vietnam though than it has in Thailand and Laos- feel dirty and sticky more. Take care and catch up again soon :) Love to all :) xxxx |
| 27th October 2008 Lyd | Food... - From: Hoi An- 2nd day...not so touristy... For Laos and Vietnamese cuisine i will look for recipes online and just judge it with taste if i decide to make anything...no time for cookery lessons- i still think Thai is the best food so far but Mekong Fish in Laos was especially tasty with Sticky rice and i have had some lovely food here in Hoi An... As for following up Tonya Fitzpatrick, i think i will send her an email when i get to Thailand and see if she is still interested, i don't have Skype and for the next few weeks i don't have time and seeing the countries is more important. Hope you all had a lovely meal last night :) xxx |
| 27th October 2008 Lyd | flying like a bird... - From: Hoi An- 2nd day...not so touristy... Glad to hear its all going well for the both of you...has gav let you drive his car yet (can't remember his/her name)? Its weird as time is flying by so quickly yet i feel like i have been travelling for ages and done a lot within the time...very weird but yes time is going too quickly at times (apart from some of the lovely long bus rides but fortunately i am an optimist- probably much to other travellers disgusts lol) xx |
| 26th October 2008 Lyn | ... and the bikini? - From: Hoi An- 2nd day...not so touristy... So... how is it? What's it like? I've never heard of a bespoke bikini before - but what an excellent idea - it should fit in all the right places. I never was happy with the ones I bought when I was your age, apart from one which I loved but which cost me a small fortune at the time. Had heard of Hoi An from our research a couple of years ago (before we decided on Cambodia) and have had a look on Wikipedia and also the UNESCO website -it does look interesting. Have you seen the Japanese bridge? The difference seems to be that the streets are dry... LOL Sorry that you've encountered so much water. Possibly the reason for the river turning back on itself is that it's an estuary - so maybe the incoming tide? Our weather is now getting chillier - there's a severe weather warning of heavy snow for parts of Scotland - and we can expect sleet on Wednesday! So make the most of your warm rain and bikini while you can!! We're all well - off to Grandma and Grandad's for dinner soon. Take care - much love xxx |
| 26th October 2008 Grandma | Wow - what a time you are having - From: Hoi An- 2nd day...not so touristy... Its great to read about your exploits - will you follow up the Travel'n On radio with Tonya Fitzpatrick? Sounds an interesting idea. Your dad, Lyn & Joan are coming for a meal this evening. Don't forget to keep learning the local recipes as a meal would be great when you're home. Love Grandma & Grandad |

| 25th October 2008 Lyd | floods... - From: Welcome to Vietnam... You were right indeed...i was going to explore Hue for a few hours but the place is flooded- over the knee in some places but luckily not that deep from the bus to the hotel where the luggage was abandoned before everyone (Well nearly everyone) decided to carry on to Hoi An... Bless your mum, its probably the best decision...definately meet up at the full moon party, i am staying on samui i think...not sure onthe plans apart from the fact that i am told the accomodation is booked :) Speak soon :) and look after yourself! |
| 23rd October 2008 Arnold | heys - From: Welcome to Vietnam... glad to see u post at last.. was kinda worried for u as i see the news on tv tat central part of vietnam is flood... god bless u're fine.. can see that everything is fine n fun for u.. some news that i'm going to bring.. will remove my cast end of the month.. and i'm not suppose to go much walking as the doctor says... my mum is keeping me at home and won't allow me to travel long as my pre season training is on december.. but i will meet you at the full moon party as i don't want to miss it and to mit you too.. i will catch you maybe i say koh sumui or phuket.. i'll come out a plan soon.. will let u know.. speak soon to discuss more.. take care and enjoy yrslf.. |
| 19th October 2008 Travel'n On Radio Show | Sounds like fun - From: I survived (with a few bruises) Your tubbing adventure sounds like fun and I'd like to learn more and have you on our radio show to discuss. | 18th October 2008 Lyn | Vang Vieng - health hazard??!!! - From: Last day here in Luang Prabang... Hadn't heard of Vang Vieng and Googled it - the Wikipedia entry is scary! Watch out for the big jump off the 10metre swing - hazardous on the ear drums apparently. I've watched it on YouTube - hmmm, definitely not for me but maybe you'll enjoy, having jumped into waterfalls! And look carefully at the food you are offered.... Sounds an interesting place, too, and some of the photos I've seen have similarities with Guilin in China (remember Fawlty Towers guesthouse in Yangshuo, the cycling day with Farmer Tang through monsoon rain and detour after the bridge was swept away, followed by 'laundering' the money and passports under the bedcovers when they got soaked through?!) Enjoy your trip there. How long do you plan to stay in Vang Vieng and where to next? Lots of love from Joan and me xxx (Dad's off on his travels at the moment - back Monday. Meanwhile, we've been gardening and now I must get back to my dress-making, as I need a Sixties outfit for a party next weekend. More of that anon...) |
| 17th October 2008 Lyd | i have been away far too long... - From: Last day here in Luang Prabang... I admit my grammer was never good...but i read one line before closing the page to submit it...and it was just dreadful and i missed out words...all in one line...my brain is way too distracted! Anyway i am off for a shower, then to pack my bags and to bed. Night all xxxxxxxxx |

| 7th October 2008 Lyd | Update... - From: Great night... Well the poor guy who was asleep by the time i made it upstairs missed his flight this morning, well we can only assume he did and was still rather drunk this morning at 11 when he stumbled up- his flight was at 12...i just said not to worry as there will always be a later flight...my words of wisdom- you would think i had missed a flight before or something... |
| 7th October 2008 Lyd | mango... - From: Quick note on my day... Well there are options...one guy said that it could have been pickled (he hasn't tried it though as he wasn't here so couldn't confirm it) and the other option is that it: Unripe mangoes (which are extremely sour) are eaten with salt, and in regions where food is hotter, with salt and chili. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mango ....good old wikipedia :)! which sounds right as we got it with salt...yukky yukky lol...i will inform the guys later! |
| 7th October 2008 Grandma | Photos - From: Great night... Great to see your photos -I've printed 2 lovely ones of you -one at the Half Moon festival and one in a boat with a friend. Love Grandma |

| 6th October 2008 Lyn | Beware the gift of sweeties... - From: Quick note on my day... ... your first introduction to tamarind sweets was near the bridge at the River Kwai (Khanchanaburi, I think?), if you recall. A gift from a trusted source - do you still trust your father to treat you nicely??! He has just reminded me about the party going up the river on the over-sized floating platform - with an even more over-sized, giant even, disco. Wall-to-wall speakers, he recollects. I just remember the noise. LOL. Of course you get snap-happy with a camera - that's your father's doing, as well! Enjoy your outings. Lots of love xxx |
| 6th October 2008 Sturge | - From: Great night... lol. fun times! |
| 6th October 2008 Grandma | Wow-what a life - From: Day of temples... Hi Lydia, We're back from France -not quite so exciting as you life -but a good time. A vegetarian Bean-only eater?? Glad you've found friends and good visits - love reading your blog -sounds just like you. Love Grandma. |
| 4th October 2008 G'dad | - From: Oh Lordy....i have had a girly day! I can only think that "vegetarian" breakfast means Mars bars and alcohol but I frequently get hold of wrong ideas, but they are both full of carbohydrates. Glad you are enjoying yourself. We are now back from France and so following your blog daily. G'dad |
| 4th October 2008 Martin | next a massage ? - From: Oh Lordy....i have had a girly day! Hi Lyd What hedonistic indulgance, next you need to try a Thai massage, so good for the back and shoulders, or maybe its a male-female thing, though I find it still works well with a male masseuer ... If unsure try a foot massage first, maybe after walking round temples all day. Having pampered your soul, then pamper your soles. Love Dad xxx |
| 2nd October 2008 martin | oh to sin ! - From: I have sinned... Hi Lydia And I thought you had mearly eaten cat or maybe horse !! But a McDonalds, how could you !!!!!!!!! Love Dad |

It was the Jui Tui, just off Ranong Road... |
| 30th September 2008 Jamie Monk | Where were you? - From: Vegetarian Festival Something missing from this post - where were you for this?? What temple did you go to? |
| 23rd September 2008 Lyn and Joan | YouTube??? We want YOUR pics - From: last night on the island (for the moment...) So... where are they? Dad reckons you're still in Heathrow, as we've seen no evidence of anything else. And what's this about half moon parties. Is this a case of any excuse?? Hope that you enjoy the bus ride to Bangkok. Keep your eyes shut when you see the cement mixers coming! Oh, but of course, the bus will be going so fast that even the cement mixer won't get a chance to overtake... LOL, ha ha he he!!! Lots of love from us all |

| 19th September 2008 G'dad | Map - From: The adventure continues... Thanks for info on where you are. Found it on the map, If it gets more remote perhaps you could find a computer programming friend who could tweak the map to show an animated Lydia jumping up and down with an arrow saying "I am here". Scuba sounds fun. Enjoy. |
| 18th September 2008 Lyd | where am i... - From: Few bites more! that is the question...more famously known for where the beach is shot (film from a few years back that had leonardo dicaprio), near south of Phuket and also just off the coast of Krabi)...if thats any help? xx |
| 17th September 2008 Lyn | Hello - From: Few bites more! It's getting quite autumnal here - dry but definitely chilly early and late - so I'm really envious of the warmth that you're experiencing! Do hope that you are now beginning to find some contacts and that the adventures start soon. Just watch out for those Lydia-eating dogs!! LOL Joan sends her love - but I can't persuade her to take up blogging, so I print off your exploits for her to read over breakfast. We're looking forward to the next chapter... |

| 14th September 2008 Lyn | Rust Bucket... - From: Still here... Further to your text about boats. Now... you can't tell me that you don't remember the rust bucket that took us and the car from Koh Samui to the mainland. We arrived at the quay to be told that this wasn't our boat and we were to catch a later one - 3pm ish, I think. When we finally got on, our car was first on, rammed right up at the front of the ro-ro ferry, and we had to squeeze out of the car to get to the staircase. You and Gavin were VERY reluctant to tackle the metal staircase which had more holes in it than were required for ventilation and strength... and a handrail that rolled around even more than the boat did... We had a map with us and used it to look at the coastline up ahead. Fortunate that... as we realised that we had been landed 50miles further up the coast than our intended destination and it was going to get dark before we found our hotel. A proper 'resort' hotel, as promised, after the 'privations' of the traditional Thai bungalows in a beautiful garden on Koh Samui. Oh well, never mind... we had the address - Beach Road and the postcode for the town. We got to the town and a coast road and turned right. The road got smaller and smaller, bumpier and without any hotels or dwellings. Hey! There's a sign. It says 'MT Resort' with an arrow. Not the one we had thought of but, never mind, it's now dark. Bumpier and bumpier, big puddles and potholes and there was MT Resort. You know the rest - garden huts on stilts, ants in the beds, wonderful seafood, builders hammering on a neighbouring roof all night, and (my memory alone)... a perfect cup of tea, in a deckchair with Harry Potter and watching the fishermen on the beach in the morning. Hope that you don't encounter the rust buckets - but that you do come back with enduring memories such as MT Resort! Update us when you can and enjoy Phi Phi. |
