2/1/07 Left Clearwater Beach after working on my travel blog for a while in the morning. Decided to stop at Jose’s one more time as I had really enjoyed the conversation with the people there and the food was good as well. After that, headed for a camping area in the Crystal River area. This is the place where you can swim with the manatees. Didn’t really find a place their so continued on to Manatee Springs State Park. Made it to Manatee Springs about 6:00, which is their closing time. I was lucky and they gave me a spot in their parking lot for $8.56. This is a great park! They have a spring that puts out 71 deg water year round. They have a swimming area, where the spring surfaces. They also have cave ... read more

1/29/07 The drive to Clearwater Beach was pretty cool. To get to Clearwater Beach you drive through Tampa. To me it looked like a City in California. Palm Trees lining all the roads and water everywhere. It was great. Made it to the Hostel around 5:30 and checked in. I hurriedly went to the Beach to see the sunset. The sunset was pretty cool. I went out and had a couple beers and went to bed around 11:00. 1/30/07 Got up pretty early and worked on the Travelblog for several hours. There were a lot of people cooking at this Hostel and several extended stayers living there. Like all the other Hostels everybody was very nice. Around 10:00 decided to bike to Honeymoon Island. There are lots of great bike paths in this area. Pinellas Trail ... read more

1/27/07 After spending the night in the St. Augustine Hostel, I drove my bike around the town. It is a very neat town. Similar to Key West’s Duval St. they have St. George Street. Lots of old stuff in this town, which is not a surprise since this is the oldest City in the USA (log that in your grey matter you trivia buffs). Pirates burned this City down 3 times in the past so Pirate stuff was commonly seen. Also Ponce De Leon came here looking for the fountain of youth so their was a lot of his stuff as well. I really should have stayed longer, but I was a little tired and ready to head to Gainesville where a friend Anna resides. I could use some good rest. Around 12:30 I headed for ... read more

I decided to spend the night at Sebastian Inlet State Park a little ways south of Cocoa Beach. This coast line is very cool and some high end subdivisions are in this area. I suspect this is true anywhere along the coast in Florida and there is a lot of Coast. I suspect a lot of these homes are second homes. Made it to Sebastian Inlet State Park around 6:00 and they were full. They offered me a couple other campground options, which included parking in their lot for $13. This seemed pricey to me for a parking spot. I took several sunset photos. It was cool seeing the tide rush out of the inlet and into the Atlantic Ocean as the time was trending towards low-tide. There were lots of fisherman in this area. I ... read more

I enjoyed Key West, but was ready to move on. I am not the type to lay on the beach as I need something to do. In general it seems like the drive away from a place that I have been to for several days is always a little sad, but arriving at the new place is always exciting. Arrived at the Florida City Hostel around 4:30. There were a few folks with dreadlocks and no shirts drinking beer. I was not sure what to think of that. Additionally, there were Bob Marley pictures along with psychedelic drawings around the Hostel. I read where they were having a communal dinner that night and the cost was only $3.00. Decided to sign up for that. Also saw where they were giving a tour of the Everglades ... read more

Again I got up around 7:00 and got going by 8:00. Started running into tolls around Miami. This brought back bad memories of the northeast. Stopped and got a few supplies before heading to the Keys, where I expected everything to be expensive. Arrived at Leo’s campground around 7:00 PM. I had called in advance so they expected me. It kind of sucked in that I was paying $43/night to essentially park my truck. Well it would do for the night, because I didn’t have any other ideas. 1/16/07 Got up at 6:00 and headed to the Regatta to try and get on a boat. Arrived at the regatta headquarters around 7:00 AM and spoke with a person about volunteering. They said I would need to speak with Mike and it would be best to wait ... read more

1/14/07 Got up and headed for Charleston. Got there around 10:00. This is a very historical City. I enjoyed my short stay there immensely. I took a carriage ride tour. I decided against going to Savannah, because I felt there would be a lot of similar structures there, with a little less history. I made it to the Orlando area around 9 and was spent. I looked for a cheap motel. The best I could find was a place that is being remodeled and it wasn’t clean. It cost $40 a night so that was good, but I am not sure it was worth it. I would have rather paid a little more I think. Actually went to another motel and sat in their lobby using their wifi most of the night. ... read more

Left around 8:30 in the morning and headed South. I was surprised at all the duck hunting that takes place in this section of the country. The sand dune like beaches also amazed me. The beach banks are really high. It also came to my attention that surfing is king in this area of the country. In Mirlo Beach the sand is piled up like snow is piled up in Colorado. I bet the cats love this area. A lot of this area is dependent on tide somewhat. This is true for all coastal regions. There are huge wildlife preserves in this area. The fishing poles are mounted on the front of trucks. I talked to some locals and they mentioned people are surfcasting near Cape Hatteras lighthouse. So I decided to walk out there and ... read more

Left Harrington around 8:30 headed for Norfolk and then to Nags head. Arrived in Norfolk around noon and went to the USS Wisconsin. That ship is huge. Over 800 ft. long. A little shy of three football fields. Amazing. Just think if society put as much effort into finding cures for diseases and helping people, rather than ways to efficiently kill people how much better this world might be. The problem is money and egos get in the way and we have what we have, societies building up their arsenals so as to intimidate first and to kill when intimidation doesn’t work. Left Norfolk around 2. Got lost momentarily and had to take a different route. This set me back probably an hour or so. I stopped at a gas station and noticed all of the ... read more

Spent most of today driving from Harvard, Massachusetts to Harrington, Delaware. Went through Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. I followed the mapping program the entire way. I checked it to see that it was generally sending me to the correct area and it was at first glance. I didn’t realize it was sending me through downtown New York City. It was pretty heroining. The computer would bark out commands and I would watch for the signs, while having traffic all around me. We crossed the bridge into Jersey and things were much improved. It was neat through New York how much effort they put into saving their trees. They essentially built the roads around the trees. Very pretty. I don’t think Illinois would put that kind of effort into saving trees. They had ... read more
