| 18th November 2009 Lucky Charms | No Specifics! - From: Utah - Arches National Park and Moab I would respond to your comment, but there is nothing to respond to as you state no specifics as to what offends you. Read my profile paragraph. All other people that commented on this blog left an email address except you. Very cowardly on your part! |
| 10th November 2009 antinea | fell on your blog by chance - From: Greece - Athens, Meteora, Delphi, Olympia, i love reading travelers' blogs like this one, especially this one because it's a different perspective of the country I'm from. you've made a pretty good itinerary there and I hope you really did enjoy your trip. I live to travel. And I appreciate real travelers, not just tourist travelers; real as in the kind of traveling you did. hope to see some more of your impressions of other places too! safe trips! ;) |
| 31st October 2009 Specs C Sims | OH MY! - From: Germany- Rhine River, Tubingnen, Rothenburg How jealous I was to read of your adventure. At 15 yoa I aspire to one day move to Germany and live there. Reading your travel to Tubingen and Rothenberg only made me love the German countryside all the more. I am very jealous of your travel there but an beaming with glee that one day I may visit Germany for myself in person. |

| 15th September 2009 JM | disappointed - From: Utah - Arches National Park and Moab Your pictures are great, but the text is unknowingly bigoted, somewhat offensive, under-educated drivel. And no, you are not a comedic expert. |

It made me smile looking at your process. God bless you and job well done!!! Aloha |
| 5th November 2008 Beth Baalman | Nice Photography - From: Pumpkin Carving, Turtle Soup and Ice Cream Making Festival Great photography Dave! | 3rd October 2008 Julie Jansen | No, I got ripped off when I landed here too - From: Denmark - Copenhagen ... but not for long! First at the airport train station, the machine didn't like my 500K note so I went to the window where I was charged double. hmmm. then downstairs the conductor said yes, this train goes to your station it didn't just Central. Then the cabbie went twice around the block because he couldn't get to the 'exact' spot I was staying (it was Parkveien! A major street!). And to top it off at the hotel they decided to dock me a night even though I'd told them in time I'd be a day late. At that point I wondered if they were taking tourism tips from the mafia and thought, "I"m onto you people now." :-D Having said all that ... no ripoffs since. And everyone is friendly if you know 'Hallo" and the basic phrases. Have fun those readers coming to Oslo! Jules in Australia (who will be in London in a few days for three weeks) |
| 20th August 2008 Frances | So That's How You Do It! - From: Imu Cooking Project - July 4th, 2008 Bill and I have always wanted to do this and now we have your blog telling us how. Except we have neither tee leaves nor corn stalks. Maybe palm fronds will do? |
| 15th July 2008 Lucky Charms | Wow! - From: Imu Cooking Project - July 4th, 2008 Yes someone did take good pictures, but unfortunately those were not taken by you:) You will have to give me money next year Beth, for me to allow you to be the official camera person for the event! :) |
| 14th July 2008 Beth | Wow! - From: Imu Cooking Project - July 4th, 2008 Wow, those are some fantastic pictures!!!! I must question....who was the photographer and did anyone suggest paying her for the great job that she did? I am betting she would have been on site that morning with a smile if she were on the payroll. |
| 23rd May 2008 Lucky Charms | Not sure of your comment - From: Poland - Krakow, Auschwitz, Wieliczka Salt Mine Not traveling is the worst thing to happen. Through traveling you realize there are nice people all over this world and that politicians are the ones who screw things up. They tell you one thing to get your vote and then do whatever they want while in office. I see crazy propoganda all over this world most of which is not true. The people that spread this propaganda normally have never traveled to the country that they spread rumours about. I see it all over Europe and in the US. The cycle of craziness has been happening for 1,000īs of years. European powers were out there fighting wars and colonizing countries wiping out the indigenous people since the 1500īs, but then WWII happened which devastated Europe and banlkrupted many countries and now the US has taken over where Europe left off unfortunately. The world needs better politicians. Politicians that reflect the people. Traveling is good because you learn to separate politics from the people. I went to China for this reason. I suspect they will be the world power in a few years and I wanted to meet those people. They are very nice people and I will know in the future when China does crazy things not to blame the people, but to blame the Chinese government. It is an important distinction to make! |
| 13th May 2008 Crystal | Krakow blog - From: Poland - Krakow, Auschwitz, Wieliczka Salt Mine I'm Planning a trip to Krakow and stumbled upon your blog. Appreciate that you took the time to do this as it is helpful for fellow travellers. I assume from the amount of complaints within your blog that you must be American. I'm curious to know if your travels have opened your mind up a bit in terms of adaptating to/ accepting different cultures. Although I am generalizing with this statement... I cannot comprehend why you lot bother to travel! |
| 28th March 2008 Lucky Charms | Tour Guide - From: Poland - Krakow, Auschwitz, Wieliczka Salt Mine I agree with you during our travels, it is difficult to get to know people in a country as we only get to meet a very small sampling of them. I met two Irish in Beijing recently that were some of the nicest people that you will ever meet. I talked to a Russian Couple last night and two Iranian girls yesterday as well. They are very nice. The take home message for me has been there are nice people all over this world. Each country's politicians send out the propoganda they want their people to hear. Politicians are corrupt all over this world and unfortunately until politicians start fighting wars I think their will always be wars. All we can do is to keep spreading goodwill each day and hope it becomes contaigous! Happy travels! |
| 27th March 2008 Tour Guide | tour guide - From: Poland - Krakow, Auschwitz, Wieliczka Salt Mine Dave - you did not cause me any offense - I was just stating my opion to what you had written - I am not polish, I am infact irish and have travelled extensivly throughout europe, asia, australia and also the US. Part of ehat I enjoy about the travelling is experiecing other cultures, which what I was saying when I referred to the older people in Poland not fully embracing their emergence from communisum. As an Irish person, I can also sympathis with you having to put up will the drunken Irish lads in your hostel, unfortunalty, they, painted themselves and probably other irish people in a bad light to you. As you said, this is the problem, the actions of some people tend to set the perception for en entire group - especially if those actions were annoying in the first place!!. |
| 27th March 2008 Lucky Charms | Tour Guide - From: Poland - Krakow, Auschwitz, Wieliczka Salt Mine Sorry I have offended you. The tour guide stated in the tour that the allies were criticized for not coming directly to Poland and stated indirectly that maybe it was because the allies did not like the Jews. The allies hated the Jews is what some people would take from her comments. She is telling this story to everyone that comes on her tours everyday. I simply asked her what was the reason that the allies gave and she said they said it was not good war strategy. I said the same kind of thing is going on today, in Darfur for example genocides are happening and the rest of the world is not coming to their aid either. Then totally out of context she said their is no democracy in Iraq either. I did not agree or disagree with the allies strategy just said this kind of thing goes on today in 2007. With regards to the older people ( these folks I refer to in the text were in their 50's) seeming a little grumpy, your probably right their horrific past may effect them today. Not sure. I was just stating what I observed and how I viewed it. I recently met two extremely nice Polish women in their mid 20's who said they view their country as a sad country. I only spent two days in the country and really did not get a very good sampling of the people. That is their opinion. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Again sorry for the offense. Traveling is great. I have learned so much about how the people in other countries live. I have heard American bashing throughout my travels. Sure we make mistakes but we do a lot of good as well that seems to go unnoticed. Whenever your a powerful Country, or on an individual basis whenever you do anything in life, your going to be criticized by someone. People that have traveled the US and met the people tell me they are some of the nicest people in the world and then say they do not like the politics in the US currently (which I do not either). They differentiate however between the people and the politics. People that have not traveled the US lump the two together. I really do not give people much credibility when they criticize a country they have never been to. The people of a nation live in the countryside as well, they do not live in the big City's. Again sorry for the offense! |
| 25th March 2008 Traveller | Tour Guide - From: Poland - Krakow, Auschwitz, Wieliczka Salt Mine Dave - did you ever think the tour guide was a bit cranky because maybe she has lost relatives in the camp and then had you put up with your "american hater" attidue toward her?. Seconldy - regards the attidude of the older people in Poland - these older people were brought up under a communist regime and so find the wealth and freedom people from other non communist countries difficult to understand and are possible a bit resentful of. You are a visitor to their country and should take their way of life into consideration. You definelty should continue your travels - it might broaden your mind a bit, and you wonder why there are "american haters" as you call them our there??. I dont think its the Polish people who have the problem here. Sorry - but you dont paint yourself in a good light. |

| 25th January 2008 Lucky Charms | That is what I have heard and read. - From: Germany - Berlin I have not seen women being groped except for the ones that are pretty much asking to be at dance places. Sure your definitely going to be better off in a group. If your a woman I do think you should travel with a partner especially in 3rd world countries for safety if for no other reason. I do not think the groping is common place and I would not let that deter you from a trip. |
| 25th January 2008 anonymous | - From: Germany - Berlin women are groped?? how about travel in groups |
| 23rd January 2008 Lucky Charms | Yes Woman are traveling Solo - From: Germany - Berlin I meet some women traveling solo, but not a lot. Women are often groped in Asia from what I hear. I would try and travel with some one, but if you do not have someone to travel with sure you can travel alone. You will just have to be on guard more. Let me know if you have questions about any of the CS folks I surfed with. |
| 21st January 2008 Lani | Aloha Dave - From: Germany - Berlin Yet another great blog. It seems I will be following in your footsteps much of my time in Europe. I'll check out who you couchsurfed with and put in my requests. I found transport into Turkey, and let me just say, no matter how you do it, it is pricey, so I am only planning on leaving twice for about a month the first time and permanently the second time. I am happy that you are enjoying Vietnam. How is it for solo traveling women over there? Do you see many of them? |
| 16th January 2008 Lucky Charms | Crazed Politicians - From: Poland - Krakow, Auschwitz, Wieliczka Salt Mine Yep I think it would be good if everyone in the world would see what can happen when you get crazed Politicians, which is what Hitler was. |
| 13th January 2008 Mark | Howdy - From: Poland - Krakow, Auschwitz, Wieliczka Salt Mine That was quite the interesting read. I would like to visit Poland sometime and see everything there as well. It's hard to fathom the extent of killing that went on there. The salt mine would be neat to see as well. Have a good day Dave! Mark |

| 16th November 2007 Lani | Aloha Dave - From: Italy - Rome Even though I guess I am theoretically "traveling" now, your blogs/pictures make me long to pack up and hit the road/plane/train/boat again. I will be heading to Europe in March. I need to get some must do's from you. Earplugs. I always carry them for those noisy hostel/couchsurfing stays. |
| 7th November 2007 Lucky Charms | Just Look Pictures - From: Italy - Florence, Salerno, Pompeii , Amalfi Coast and Naples I would recommened just looking at pictures at least that is what I would be doing if I were you as I know you have plenty of other matters to tend to like keeping Albers afloat. | 22nd October 2007 Lucky Charms | Poor Rob! - From: Italy - Assisi, Cortona & San Gimignano Man you are observant. I feel sorry for Rob, he can't get away with anything. You should have contacted me and you could have came up for lunch. Yes I lost a few pictures, but had them backed up on a Couchsurfing host's computer in Switzerland and he burnt them on a disk and mailed them to me. I still have Portugal, France, Spain, Switzerland and some of Germany to add to the blog. I still am hoping to get these updates done, before I leave on this last journey. Thanks for following! |
| 22nd October 2007 Nancy R | The Lost Entry? - From: Italy - Assisi, Cortona & San Gimignano Am I correct in thinking that this entry should have been back amidst some other entries. Did it get lost in the shuffle? We were up Grafton way this past Saturday with Rob's family for a day of adventure. We rode the Brussels Ferry, even though our youngest insisted that cars couldn't ride on a boat. |
| 16th October 2007 Lucky Charms | Peruvian Snow Cap - From: My Hometown - Batchtown Yep that was me at mile marker 322. There was some guy on the other side of the road as well with his hood up wearing a Peruvian Snow Cap. He is scary. | 13th October 2007 Nancy R | - From: Germany - Fussen, Munich Will you continue to write as you make your way back from Washington? | 17th July 2007 Lucky Charms | Good Questions - From: Italy - Rome First of all thanks for following the blog. It is a lot of work to keep doing it, but knowing other people are checking it out helps me to continue with the blog. I don't sleep much. Do I read others blogs? No, I am just so busy traveling I really have no spare time. It takes a lot of time to make lodging arrangements to see the City's and try to work in a little rest and relaxation. Yes at times this trip seems like work. I know every person is going to come away from a place with different observations and opinions. Each traveler meets only a few locals and only a few other travelers from which they are going to have different experiences, each traveler is at a different stage of their trip as your attitude changes the longer your on the road, each traveler has different knowledge of the place their visiting as the more you know about a place the more you will enjoy it etc. etc. There is so many things that effects a persons opinion of a place. My perception of a place I know is often going to be a lot different. About the blog. I originally thought to keep a personal journal and one for public consumption. I soon learned there is just no way I could do that as it would take too much time. I know some of the stuff that I write may be controversial and generally are just my opinions. A lot of my opinions have changed from when I started this trip and now, so if you read just one part of the blog you may not get my current opinion on a topic. I fear upsetting people with my opinions, but I hope they realize that they are just that, opinions. I really didn't expect people to read the blog, but rather just look at the pictures, but some people are reading it. Can a single woman do a trip like this? Sure, but you would need to take a few more precautions than I do. I have only had one incidence and that was a pickpocket attempt in Barcelona. When coming out of a subway, I looked down and found a hand in my pocket that wasn't mine. He got nothing as everything was zipped up in a cargo pocket. I took a picture of the guy and his coworker and will have it in a future blog update. I do see women traveling alone. It is more safe in Europe than it is in the USA with reagards to violent crimes. There are stealing crimes here. Traveling by yourself is great because you can do and go to the places you want and when you want. You also meet a lot more people. If traveling with another you are less likely to talk to other people as you will often be talking to the person you are traveling with. I can give you more information when I get back about this stuff. Well I just got into Berlin, from Krakow heading to Copenhagen, Bergen, Oslo, Helsinki then fly to Vienna, Salzburg, Munich from which I will fly back home on August 15 staying for a couple weeks before continuing the trip. Not sure when the next blog entry will be. I am way behind as it is hard to do on the road. Most of the updates will happen when I am back in the states. L8TR! |

| 16th July 2007 Kris F | My break from work - From: Italy - Rome Hi Dave. I don't want to admit how often I check your site. It has become an addiction at work. When I can't take my little grey cube a minute longer, I check out your blog. When my 'To Do' list starts to overwhelm me, I go to your site. When the sales guys won't stop calling...well, you get the picture. I am so freakin jealous, I have to bite my tongue when reading your journal. Although, I don't think I could do the hostel living thing. But other than that... So two questions -- I read a lot of travel memoirs, so I was wondering if you're reading anything like that while you're traveling? You know, getting other people's impressions of these places to compare your own thoughts to? Second--How difficult would it be for a woman to do what you're doing? Do only see women traveling in pairs? Kris |

| 30th June 2007 Nancy R | Photos - From: Italy - Florence, Salerno, Pompeii , Amalfi Coast and Naples Dave, I think your photos of the Amalfi Coast are my favorite to date. Well, with the exception of the Two Dave's picture; the caption definitely makes the photo on that one! All this talk of pizza is making me hungry. Did you know Carlyle Lake is celebrating it's 40th birthday this weekend? |
| 23rd June 2007 Nancy R | The masks - From: Italy- Milan, Lake Como, Venice, Dolomite The masks in Venice were for Carnival. Jack and Annie went there once in a Magic Tree House book. Sounds like you're still having fun! |

| 1st May 2007 Lucky Charms | Good Day Mate - From: Ireland Thanks for following. I hope to have some consistency in updates, but it is rather difficult to do on the road where I do not having readily available computer access. The easiest thing to do if you don't want to check everyday is to subscribe to the blog and an email is sent to you when updates are available. If your worried about getting spam use a email address like from yahoo. Yahoo's email account blocks spam well. Not sure if they send spam from this site. Good day Mate (like the Aussies say). Dave |
| 1st May 2007 Lucky Charms | Yes it is Pink - From: England I needed a sheet to take along and the last minute decision resulted in a pink one. | 26th February 2007 Lucky Charms | Mardi Gras - From: Pass Christian to New Orleans They were not going too wild this year at least the first weekend of Mardi Gras. The music in New Orleans was awesome as well as the Mardi Gras stuff. |
| 26th February 2007 Lucky Charms | - From: Myrtle Beach to Near Orlando I considered it, but thought Charleston would be very similar. I was in a hurry to get to Key West for the Sailing Regatta and had to cut out a stop somewhere and that was the one I axed. The next off the grid trip might not happen for a couple years, but I would definetly like to see the city someday! In San Diego right now. A little behind on the blog. Going to the San Diego Zoo today. |
| 26th February 2007 Nancy R | - From: Gulfport to Pass Christian Good work, Captain Dave! |
| 26th February 2007 Nancy R | - From: Myrtle Beach to Near Orlando I'm sorry you skipped Savannah - it's a neat river town! Rob and I were there just last year around this time. | 15th February 2007 Lucky Charms | - From: Key West to Everglades I have not wrestled any gators, as I will leave that up to Joe Dirt (one of my favorite movies by the way). I decided only to pet them! Thanks for followingt the web site. It's been quite the adventure and I am only 1.5 months into it. Stay warm I hear it is cold back there! It's in the 30's in San Antonio where I am now! |
| 15th February 2007 Lucky Charms | - From: Key West to Everglades Jack, Thanks for the nice words. I did have a blast. We will have to see what next year brings. I suspect I will have less vacation time next year than I do now:) It is easy to do your job when you have knowledgeable people telling you what to do. Stay warm. I am currently in San Antonio and it is in the 30's. I suspect it is a little cooler in Newport:) |

| 12th February 2007 Bill Guile | - From: Myrtle Beach to Near Orlando I looked at the site a little closer...I may have to copy when I take my BIKE adventure this summer....Now to find a laptop that will take the ride...I agree you should have used your sleeping bag in the hotel, but you didn't get wet.. Keep up the good work Bill |
| 11th February 2007 Lucky Charms | - From: Myrtle Beach to Near Orlando We will see. I am intriguied by the anonymity. Need hints. That hotel was worse than sleeping outside because the sheets even seemed grimy. At least while sleeping outside you have a sleeping bag that is clean on the interior. I should have brought my sleeping bag inside the motel and slept in it. |
| 11th February 2007 Lucky Charms | Mardi Gras - From: "The Rock" Jack I am in New Orlins as the locals pronounce it. Having a blast. Probably will be heading to Texas tomorrow. I hope to have an update to the blog today again. Couldn't do it recently because of web site glitches. Back on line now though.
