The trip to moscow finally arrived! Usually things like this tend to generate lots of hype and then possibly disappoint in the end. There was none of that though because I think I was sceptical of the whole trip from the very beginning. Ok so the background story to Moscow... Back in February when I was playing some pickup soccer at Gezira club, one of the guys asked if I wanted to play in a girls soccer tournament. He said the girls were good players and that I could join them. The next week I hear from one of my egyptian girlfriends that this tournament is huge and that the sponsor (Vodaphone) was paying for the winning teams (girls and guys) to go to Moscow for the UEFA Champions league football final. I was skeptical because ... read more

After a week to reflect, im finally sitting down to share my Moroccan adventures. My entry might be a little slim this time because I uploaded and labelled my pics first so I feel like I already covered a lot of the basic things that we did on the trip. The other thing is that unlike almost everything else I have done this year there were not the crazy stories to tell..it was just a wonderful, relaxing vacation. Our flight left at 830am on Friday morning with not a hitch. We were there early, had a starbucks in the airport and a lovely breakfast on board. I sat beside a Morrocan lady who had been living in Toronto with her husband who she had just divorced! She spoke some English and French, so I was able ... read more

April 18th 2008

After months of planning and weeks and days of stressful pre-trip preparations, I finally departed for my first 4 day field trip as the teacher instead of the student! Ever since I arrived in Egypt, I have had the idea of taking the high school students to the Western Desert as part of their PE class. Part of the high school curriculum requires students to learn about physical activity in an alternative environment, as well as look at some basic survival skills and first aid. Back in February, I picked the second week of April as a perfect time to take a break from the routine of school, enjoy the not-too-hot early summer weather and head out for a week in the sand. I sought out a reputable tour company and hotel, researched what other local ... read more

Things are heating up! The warm weather has finally arrived!!! It has seemed that the weather was really not at all what one would picture in Egypt for the last 4 months...thankfully it changed in the blink of an eye and I am now pink, freckly and very very happy!! Last weekend, I had the opportunity to try out a new sport: Sandboarding!!! of course with everything here being an adventure, I wasn't able to just go out to some sand dunes and give it a try, I had to do it for a TV show! haha A couple weeks ago I met a guy who is into extreme sports in egypt and does a talk show of sorts that discuss and inform viewers in the middle east (in arabic of course!) about extreme sports. ... read more

February is ending and this month has definitely had its share of ups and downs. I have gone back and forth with my decisions for next year's plan....the deadline is looming and Im still see sawing daily!! So to get down to my stories of the month... how I ended up at a horse stable Last weekend, on a whim, I agreed to go with Anna to a friend's birthday party. It turned out that the birthday boy was involved with a horse stable out by the Sakara pyramids. The party felt like an opening of a new business and we got a full tour of the stables and what would be the hotel rooms as well as invitations to bring our classes from school! The atmosphere was interesting because it was full of different groups ... read more

hanging out around cairo So I was busy catching up on emails this morning, and realized that I have slowly been getting into the habit of just writing individual emails instead of keeping up with the blog. Everyone seems to still be keeping up with it, so I figured that I might as well write it all down at once! First, Ill go waayy back to mid-january after I returned from my Greek adventures. Anna ( my roomate) and Courtney (another teacher) and I all went with one of Courtney's friends to a place called El Gouna. It is on the way to Hurgada (I have written before about this place) Anyway, it is a totally artificial little resort town (sorta a cross between a major golf resort and a seniors retirement complex) that is ... read more

Well, I finally get to click on a different country for this blog. I left late wedesday night, more like early early thursday morning (345am) for Athens., Greece. I was so so so tired so the first thing I did was try to find a hostel to check into. After a 30 Euro cab ride (wow sooooo overpriced) I found a great hostel for 14 euro/night!!! I checked in and quickly checked out...face down on the bed I slept for a couple hours, before getting up and starting my day at the more normal hour of 10am. My first impressions of Athens were so much better than I had expected! THe streets are spotless compared to Cairo, there are only a few stray dogs, almost NO catcalls or stares from the men or women and the ... read more

THe last Month and a half have been a whirlwind and I feel like one big sigh of relief now that it is over. As I mentioned, I had a blast with family visiting on and off for four weeks!!!It was a great visit and the only negative thing is that it opened up some homesickness that I really hadn't felt before. During that time I also went through my first report card experience, two Pro-D days at school in preparation for our accredidation by the BC Ministry of Education in January, and three days of parent-teacher interviews. We also have the school play going on, and I am still coaching all the soccer teams!!! WHEW! Christmas break comes in just over a week and then its off to Greece. Report cards were crazy...12 different classes ... read more

I am sorry that it has been so long since the last blog. Our internet has been on the fritz and as many of you know, mom, bernard and uncle brad have been staying at my place for the last three days. Things have been pretty calm the last few weeks, and I really realized how accustomed I am to everything here when the family came on thursday. I went with Hanni, our housecleaner, rat killer and personal chauffer, to the Cairo airport to pick everyone up at 1130. Dressed in his best suit jacket, Hanni rented a car and came to pick me up. Hanni has a special diplomatic pass into the airport, so he left me at the gates with the crowds and entered to go find everyone. I had shown him pictures of ... read more

Yet another long one! 6 days worth of travelling, touring and incredible experiences...prepare yourself! Bus and Flight to Aswan The flight was set to leave Cairo airport at 5am, so we had the school van schedualed to pick us up at our usual spots at 345am!!! I was anxious about the trip and I managed just over one hour of sleep the night before, so that was fun! We waited at the stop for about 20 minutes and when no bus came, we called the others and decided we better catch a cab quick if we wanted to get to the airport. So we walked to a bigger street to try to find a cab..this was all done in the dark because street lamps are very random around here, no rhyme or reason for where they ... read more
