As my time here in Wales quickly approaches its end, I find myself looking back upon the person that arrived at the Aberystwyth bus station, in the rain, after 20 hours of traveling, wondering why I had decided to come to Wales, of all places. Good question. It’s been like sliding down a snow and ice covered slope. I’ve been having the time of my life, in awe of the amazing things that scream by, laughing the whole way down. But as I speed faster and faster towards the finish of this icy ride that has been the last five months, I find myself clinging to anything that will slow my decent to the inevitable end of my journey. As a result, I’ve come up with a few reflections, musings and contemplations on what has characterized ... read more

Thoughts on Israel

**This was written rather quickly, with little revision, so it may be a bit rough! As Israel’s 60th anniversary approaches, all I see in the news are articles entitled, “For Israel’s Arabs, 60 years of regret,” “Israel marks 60 years as political clouds gather,” “Israel celebrates its 60th with pride, but also uncertainty.” As an American Jew, I feel more than ever confused, embarrassed, unsure of how to react to what should be an incredible feat of politics, military might and determination. The state of Israel still survives as the Jewish homeland after sixty years of unfaltering attacks on its existence. Shouldn’t I be proud, ecstatic, happy at the very least? Many say no. Western media says no. Other Jews say no. They say we cannot “celebrate the birthday of a state founded on terrorism, massacres ... read more

Two Weeks in Spain

What a couple of weeks. Fitting everything into a blog seems impossible, so I’ll try to give the bits that best represent our trip as a whole. I traveled the majority of the trip with two friends from Aber, Amy and Ashley (from Canada and Montana, respectively). The trip began March 17 at 8am on a bus to London. The trip hit its first hiccup at 9.30am when the bus broke. We were off to a great start. Amy and I flew into Girona and spent the day there wandering around. The old part of town with narrow stone streets and buildings and old cathedrals and gardens transported us to another time, and seemed unreal. The next stop was Barcelona where we stayed for seven days and met up with Ashley. Because of Easter, we ended ... read more

Tomorrow I take a bus to London, spend the night and then fly to Girona for two weeks in Spain! So here’s a quick catch up on what I’ve been up to before I leave. A couple weekends ago I participated in Superteams. This is a tournament between different club sports teams (men and women compete separately), everyone split into teams of seven. My football team put in three teams and there were numerous teams from netball, rugby, basketball, cricket, swimming, water polo, field hockey. Over three days we competed in way too many events: swimming, kayaking, volleyball, dodgeball, basketball, football, gym test, sprints, campus mile, and an obstacle course. My favorite bit was the basketball. Our first match in basketball was against the rugby girls. The only way to describe it is that there was ... read more

Over the weekend I traveled to Snowdonia with the Aber Expeditions Club. Snowdonia is a region of north Wales and home to the tallest mountain in all of England and Wales, Snowdon. Coming in at 1,085 ft., it’s no monster, but still a good climb. I’ve always really enjoyed hiking or climbing in new places. There’s something about going over a new terrain that brings you closer to wherever you are. Different soil, rocks, grasses, trees, and wildlife put together the colors, sights and smells of each new environment. On Saturday we climbed Snowdon. It was really foggy, wet and windy, so I didn't get any of the amazing views, but I still really enjoyed it. You know it was a good day if you come back soaked to the bone with only a pair of ... read more

Cardiff - The Best Worst Trip Ever

We went to Cardiff while the Wales - Scotland rugby match of the 6 Nations Cup (England, Scotland, Wales, Italy, France, Ireland) was being held there, and came back dirty, tired, and not wanting to leave Aber again for a while. These photos probably won't do our trip any justice, but I hope it gives a glimpse into the many things that happened between the evenings of Friday, 2/8 and Sunday, 2/10.... read more

Take a hike

I took a walk from Aberystwyth along the coastal path five miles north to the town of Borth. It’s great walk with the sea on one side, farmland on the other. The only downside of being on the coast was the wind. Walking up some steep hills, you use as much energy to lean against the wind trying to push you off the cliff into the sea as you do moving upwards. As I arrived in Borth it began to rain, and the walk back was looking much less exciting. The next bus back to Aber was in three hours, and as I looked around, cold and wet, I happened to see somebody walk by with a hoodie that said, “Aber Surf Club”. I followed him back to a group of guys stripping down out of ... read more

I find it fascinating that despite being in another part of the world there is still a huge portion of the news and every day discussion regarding the US primaries and elections. Although I am in the UK, which I assume is much more closely invested in US politics than perhaps other parts of the world, it still goes to show a spotlight that is incessantly trained on the change and movements of our domestic politics. I guess I had always denied that the US was a hegemon for more than its status as a political, economic and military power. My world view was closer to a utopian vision of the international system as a more globalized and equalized plane. But evidently it is the nature of a super power, or at least this super power, ... read more

Okay. So the plan is for this to be a photo blog, but here's a start to what my time here has been like so far. Getting here was hilarious, embarrassing and awkward. As soon as I collected my baggage in Heathrow I knew I had brought too much. My bag was marked "HEAVY: You may need assistance in lifting this bag". Great start. I managed to drag my bags across various stations and in and out of trains, looking like the stereotypical lost tourist. I eventually made it to Aber by bus twenty hours after leaving San Francisco, because the train lines had flooded. My introduction to Aber has been filled with many awkward and embarrassing situations. Amongst them have been meeting a forest bum after getting lost on a run outside of town; being ... read more
