Well we have returned from our Gobi Desert visit. We spent 6 nights and 7 days out in the Gobi. It was an amazing experience and certainly not one that I will forget in a hurry! Our driver Tiger, who couldn't really speak English - although we did manage to add about 6 words to his vocabulary by the end of the trip, these included "Thank you", "good night", "good morning" and "SLOW DOWN TIGER!!" The roads were - basically rubbish and just dirt tracks that all look the same. We are fairly certain that it was Tiger's first trip - which meant we got lost a LOT! We spent a lot of time going from Ger to ger trying to get directions. We were in a very old russian army van that wasn't particularly reliable. ... read more

After another train ride and two border crossings we have finally made it to Ulaanbaatar. And so far so good! The train ride was loads of fun - most people on our carriage were tourists so it ended up being a bit of a party carriage and was lots of fun. The border crossings were relatively painless although very long. We were held on the train for a couple of hours which just got hot and stuffy and without being able to use the loo - of course I was busting! There seems to be loads of people involved in the whole process which I guess is a throw back to the communist days - jobs for everyone!! We are now in Ulaanbaatar - the hostel we are staying at is USD5 per night and they ... read more

To start this one off - I think I should explain some of the titles! The fashions in Russia can really only be described as interesting!! To say the very least! Trousers are worn high and tight - white if at all possible. Any man who is anybody carries a manbag - most of which look a lot like a mini brief case! Very suave! Camo gear is very in as well - only for the men though! Since my last entry I have been back on the train, rained on, drunk and propositioned - but not necessarily in that order!! We jumped on the train at 11.52 Moscow time. Laura and I were in a room with two russian ladies - Elena and another older lady whose name I don't remember but she was from ... read more

We are leaving Krasnoyarsk today and heading to Irkutsk to check out Lake Baikal. The past few days in Krasnoyarsk (or K Town as we find that slightly easier to pronounce!) has been great. We had a fairly lazy afternoon the first day off the train - thoroughly enjoyed our shower. With a few of us dealing with tummy bugs - it was an interesting start to our time on land. We headed down to the river for a few beers overlooking the river and the bridge - a pretty nice place to be. We then headed to find this buffet - but ended up at a place called the Russian Cafe. Which appeared to have dishes from each of the former states. The menu was all in Russian - but luckily had some photos. We ... read more

Well after about 56 hours on the train, we made it to Krasnoyarsk. The train was very comfortable, Jules, Tan, Laura and I all in one cabin with Greg next door. Linda, a Canadian lady we met at the hostel in Moscow was a few carriages down. Our beds were simmple benches with a mattress on top - the first night was the best sleep ever - the following ones were not that great! We quickly met loads of people mostly Russian who couldn't speak English, but itwould seem that really you don't need language at all! We had a few pictures drawn for us lots of pointing and of course once the vodka/beer is opened life is good! We met a guy called Eugene - who had a mouth full of gold teeth - he ... read more
