All the travelling and sight-seeing finally caught up with me, so I took a day off and went down to the beach area (though not the beach itself) and spent the day reading. The alternative motive behind this quite day was that we were planning to go to a midnight viewing of Iron Man 2. Given that I had yet to make it past 11pm, this was no mean feat. In the end I managed it, with the help of much caffeine in its various forms. The film was fun and beforehand we went to a Cuban restaurant (called Versailles of all things) where we had a lovely meal. Most of the food seemed to be pork, fried in a garlicky sauce (called Mojo) and served with fried plantain, rice and black beans. It was delicious. ... read more

(** for some reason, the photos are all over the place in this entry - sorry about that! not sure there's much I can do about it, so please bear with it***) Getty was an oligarch-turned-philanthropist, who invested an art trust fund with hugely valuable shares in his own company, for the establishment of an art museum and upon the condition that the art was free. Two centres were set up: the Getty Villa in Malibu, which I saw on Wed 5 May and the Getty Centre in Los Angeles, which I actually saw on Tues 4 May. THE GETTY VILLA The Getty Villa was the first establishment. It's in the form of a Roman villa buried in Herculeneum, and stands on a hill in Malibu, with commanding views over the ocean and the surrounding land. ... read more

Well, it had to be done at some point. Today was a mamoth day of much driving (thanks to my long-suffering friend). First we headed for Sunset Boulevard, and from there turned on to Beverly Hills. For a Brit, it's easy not to be impressed by Beverly Hills - it's essentially a pretty, green, overgrown spot. Then you remember that the rest of LA is dusty, yellowing scrubland and you realise that the verdant greenery is proof enough of wealth, and also serves to mask the buildings and the occupants' privacy. We passed the elite school for starlets' bratlings, which apparently safeguards their privacy. I find it quite sad that the actors/directors/whatever feel that their children can't live normal lives, but I'm told that, for the top celebrities, their childrens' baby photos are leaked to the ... read more

So after the cliff-hanger last ending, I can reveal that my friend's incredibly talented housemate adjusted, remade and sewed costumes for the Renaissance Pleasure Faire. Yes, Faire. A frills and whistles recreation of Elizabethan England in LA. It was...something. Hillarious but also totally overwhelming. Overwhelming partly because of the huge numbers of people (and when you're wearing an extremely tight corset and layers of thick cloth in plus 20 degrees, your tolerance for crowds diminishes rapidly) and also because of all the stalls and performances. I tried archery and managed to utterly miss every target - although I got closer to the target I wasn't aiming at. I now have an impressive set of bruises to nurse. There was one fun performance by Men In Tights, about how to pose like a manly man. It was ... read more

My first day. Decided that the best way to beat jet lag was to be in the sun as much as possible. So we went to the beach. We went to Venice first off - for those who know London, think Soho meets Camden but all on a promenade by the sea. The stalls offered anything and everything and between that and the throngs of people, I don't think I took much in! It became a bit of a colourful blur... I'm still trying to get over how wide the streets are, which makes even a normal road seem like a motorway with shops either side. The bus stop (yes we braved public transport - and the bus had a bike rack on its nose, genius!) we got off at was next to this drugs store ... read more
