Asia » China » Shaanxi » Hua Shan June 26th 2008

(Day 83 on the road)I am back from climbing Hua Shan, one of the five holy Taoism mountains of China, and famous for its spectacular scenery. I had set out with three people from the hostel I stayed in (Canadian Allen, British Harriet and American Aaron), and on the bus there from Xi'an we met another American couple (Jen and Eric) and an Australian father with his son (Paul and Tim), who then joined us. So we were a big group that started the ascent, and it was rather strenuous, both due to the steepness of it and the 36 degrees in the shades that we had to endure. There are four peaks on Hua Shan (North, East, South and West Peak), and we reached the North Peak after about 6 hours, all of it actually ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing June 18th 2008

(Day 75 on the road)So I am back in Beijing. The last time I was here I did a lot of the touristy things (Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace), so this time I will try and also see the things that I haven't been to previously. Although I did go back to the Summer Palace, as I only spent about an hour or so there last time, which is definitely not enough for this place. I also went back to the Temple of Heaven, one of the nicest landmarks in Beijing in my opinion. All in all, I spent six days in the city (most of it actually with very nice Anna from Poland whom I had met there), staying at a very cool hostel called Qianmen Hostel, about 400 meters from the Forbidden ... read more

(Day 75 on the road) Beijing! After another good 30 hours on the train from Ulaan Baatar (with a short stop in Jinning to change trains and have a nice dinner), I have arrived in the Chinese capital. After traveling for exactly 7865 kilometers, today thus marks the day that I finished the Transsib. Starting in Moscow on May 13th and traveling all across Russia and Mongolia, it took me over a month to complete this epic journey, and it was worth every bit of it. I have met an unbelievable amount of nice people, both on the trains and on the streets, and of course in the hostels I stayed in. Russia amazed me, and I guess I will be back to explore more one day. I had very limited expectations regarding Mongolia, but what ... read more

Asia » Mongolia » Ulaanbaatar June 16th 2008

(Day 73 on the road)I am back in Ulaan Baatar after my trip to Gobi, and am taking it very slowly. A bit of leisurely sightseeing, sleeping, chatting to fellow travelers, watching some movies from the extensive DVD collection of the hostel, getting a Japanese Hot-Oil-Massage and body scrub (amazing!), hitting some balls at the golf driving range, partying the night away and so on. It is very nice to slow down a little, and as my train to China left only about a week later, that gave me enough time to catch my breath. The hostel I stayed in was called Golden Gobi Guesthouse, and is in my opinion the best place to stay in Ulaan Baatar. It is well equipped (including two comfy lounges) and family run, and the atmosphere here is just perfect. ... read more

(Day 69 on the road)Great, I just found out that someone must have used a fake copy of my credit card to make cash-withdrawals in Moscow the previous two days! I have left Moscow about a month ago and have the credit card here with me, so I am assuming they must have copied my data and produced a new, fake credit card somehow. But how they got hold of my card-number and PIN, which I have neither told anyone nor written down anywhere, remains a mystery to me. All in all, there were numerous withdrawals, totaling about 1900 Euro! I have now canceled the credit card, but my bank could not assure me that I will get my money back, which seems up to Visa to decide. It will also take them three (!) weeks ... read more

Asia » Mongolia » Gobi Desert June 9th 2008

(Day 66 on the road)From Ulaan Baatar, I left on a week-long trip into the heart of the vast Gobi Desert, the largest desert in Asia and the fourth-largest in the world. I set off with two Finnish brothers (Mikka and Mikko) and a German couple (Eva and Daniela). And of course our very cool and competent driver cum mechanic, Mishka. The vehicle of choice in the harsh desert is a very sturdy, Russian-made van, which is 100% mechanic, so no fancy electronics that can boggle up. As many cars in the desert, and certainly all the tourist vans, are actually of the same type, this also means that you can quite easily get spare parts from other drivers. We had a few breakdowns (the first flat tire just 3h after leaving Ulaan Baatar); Mishka fixed ... read more

(Day 60 on the road)I would not have left Russia and Lake Baikal yet if it wasn't for my visa, which was running out. I could have easily spend a lot more time in the area! So instead I found myself on the early morning train from Irkutsk to Ulaan Baatar. The train left at 5 in the morning (and arrived in Ulaan Baatar some 30 hours later), so I skipped the accommodation for the last night in Irkutsk and rather spent the time debating life with Julie, an Australian girl I had met on Olkhon Island at Lake Baikal. No boundaries, Julie! There are actually two trains from Irkutsk to Ulaan Baatar. One that leaves Irkutsk in the evening, and one that leaves very early in the morning. As the tracks go right along Lake ... read more

(Day 55 on the road)The trip to Olkhon Island on Lake Baikal got off to a bad start: After a smooth 4h minibus-ride through some snow-covered roads and forests to the ferry which was supposed to bring us to the island, we found out that the ferry was cancelled due to strong winds. And windy it was - I have never experienced anything like it. We were ten people sitting in the van, and the car was being moved back and forth by the storm. In the end, we waited eight long hours in the bus (it was way too cold and windy to stay outside the bus for any amount of time), before the storm finally settled and the ferry took us across. So what should have been a 4h tour became a 12h torture... ... read more

(Day 51 on the road)I love my blog. Not so much because I think it will win me the Pulitzer Prize, but because it helps me to reflect on my travels. It actually makes me stop and think back what I have experienced and what of it is worth noting down. When I first started the blog the main intention was so that friends and family could keep track of me and take part in my journey. The further I travel, the more it becomes important also to myself. But back to my Trans Siberian journey: After leaving Tomsk and another 36h journey with two straight nights on the train, I arrived in Irkutsk, the starting point for exploring Lake Baikal. I didn't see much of Irkutsk when I first got here, but after returning from ... read more

Europe » Russia » Siberia » Tomsk May 23rd 2008

(Day 49 on the road)Dead-tired after a few rough nights on trains and only two hours of sleep the night before I arrived in Tomsk, a charming university town in the middle of Siberia. I desperately needed a break from my exhausting overnight-hopping, so I decided to stay a while. This was by no means easy: The first four hotels I went to all across town were booked out, so I had to settle for a place well out of my price range. The alternative would have been to press on to Krasnoyarsk, but I really had no energy left for another day of exploring and another night on the train. As it turns out, it was the right decision. I shared a room with a very nice Russian guy working for a local oil company, ... read more
