The experiences I have had thus far are probably not what would first come to mind when you talk about working in Africa. As a result, my view of Africa is one that doesn’t often get related back home. It’s one where people are trying to make a living in the same way we are in North America. People still want to live in the city and make money. They want to watch movies, and have a social life. Teenagers want to fall in love and live the fairytale love story just as much here in Africa as I did growing up. They go to school, earn their way to pay for their education if they can and try to get jobs when they graduate. They care about fashion and trends, being stylish shows a level ... read more

The last you heard from me in regards to the projects I was working on in Ghana was just an introduction to the NGO that I am working with and the projects that they are running. Since then I realize I have not really explained what it is exactly that I have been doing in Ghana. When I first introduced EnterpriseWorks (EW) the NGO that I am working with in Accra, Ghana, I mentioned a few projects; the plastic waste research and the wood stove project. These are the two projects that I have been working over the past 2 months, and I will take some time now to explain the plastic waste research project since it’s the one I dedicated most of my time and energy on. Plastic Waste Research The Problem Waste Management has ... read more

July 1st: HAPPY CANADA DAY as well as GHANAIAN REPUBLIC DAY! Two holidays in one to celebrate on this day in Ghana, however I’m not much in the mood for celebrating. The last two weeks have been a little bit rough for me, nothing serious so please don’t worry but it is the reason why I have not written in awhile. To be honest, I don’t really know what happened but I become seriously homesick, anxious and a little bit depressed. Louis, my EWB partner in Ghana, came back from Northern Ghana where he had spent the last 5 weeks. It was the first white person I had really spoken with since he left and I think I had a weird form of culture shock, all of sudden it was extremely obvious that I was white, ... read more

Life in Accra I just thought I should introduce my working and living arrangements here in Ghana. For those who weren’t able to read through my last posting, I am working with an NGO called EnterpriseWorks(EW) in the capital city of Accra. The office is located on the outskirts of Accra in a small area called East Legon. EW has rented a compound house where most of it is composed of office space, while there are some smaller rooms in the back that probably once served as servants quarters. This is where I live. There is a second kitchen, bathroom and two smaller rooms. I use one and the full-time security guard, Gilbert, lives in the other. We share the kitchen and bathroom. We have running water, air-conditioning, a main telephone line and an inside toilet. ... read more

So it’s time for me to explain a little bit about what exactly I’m doing here in Ghana. It all started last September when I ran for an executive position with Engineers without Borders at McGill. Engineers without Borders(EWB) is a Nationwide club that seeks to share knowledge and education regarding development work, particularly in regards to technology. Part of their mission is raise funds to send university students overseas each summer to work for 4 months in a developing country, usually through partnering with a local Non-Governmental Organization(NGO). The idea is to hopefully provide these students with the opportunity to have small impact on the community that they are working in but more importantly to give them first hand experiences that they can use to relate to people back in Canada who have never had ... read more

Greetings!! Akwaaba!! Maadjo from Ghana! I will be using this website to post stories, experiences and general thoughts about what is going on for me here in Ghana, Africa over the next 3 months. I have now been in Ghana for two and a half weeks and I have had the opportunity to travel to many different places since my arrival. I am now in Accra, the capital, on the coast of Ghana where I will spend most of the next few months working with a Non-Governmental Organization(NGO) called EnterpriseWorks (EW). I’ll be writing more about my work here later, but for now it should be enough to say that the idea behind my journey to Africa is to gain a view of development and perhaps have small impact with the people and the community you ... read more
