Since the last time I wrote I've spent very little time in Kathmandu. I started working full time with ECCA and have spent some time getting to know the teachers and students at the Yasodhara Buddhist school. I have put together some preliminary coursework for the students and teachers and have taught a couple days of classes. It's kind of fun, I was pretty nervous at first but everyone is really nice and the class size is small so it's less intimidating. Not really knowing all that much about computers made this work a little intimidating but since there were questions as basic as how to open a program I seem to be confident that I can manage the first couple of weeks of this course just fine. Only two days into my teaching though I ... read more
So here is finally my next entry to you all. Last week, due to the ongoing festival, we decided to delay the rest of our orientation until the end of the festival since most places we were planning on visiting were going to be closed. So since that also meant that we couldn't start our volunteer placements, we had nothing to do. Myself and 5 other ladies decided it would be a good opportunity to go for a short trek so that we could get all this travel stuff out of the way before we start working that way we can focus on our work once it began rather than wonder "oh...when am I going to get a break from work to go on a trek!". Anyway we headed out to Pokhara to do a 4 ... read more
So for the past few days we've been having our orientation into Nepal. During this time we have been having cultural and history lessons but also have been taking walks around Kathmandu and seeing some of the major areas here. The first place we went to was a local market and then to Durbar square. Durbar square is an area with a few different temples and where many festivals will take place. Right now we are in the middle of the Deshain festival which is 10 days long. This is a festival that involves many sacrifices to be made so if you spend some time in Durbar square you are guaranteed to see an animal sacrifice. Durbar square is also where the palace of Kathmandu's Kumari. No I didn't actually get to meet the Kumari at ... read more
So I finally arrived in Kathmandu and I'm super excited to be here. I ended up being about 3 hours later than expected, but that wasn't much of a surprise. The last part of my journey wasn't too bad though because I was randomly upgraded to Executive Class so I was able to do 2 hours of waiting in the lounge, which was well equipped with couches and free food. Had some tasty cashew samosas and an hour long nap. The flight was pretty comfortable too so it was a nice way to end off the long trip. So here are some of the first impressions of this place (yes they are very preliminary). Traffic in Kathmandu is crazy. I guess I wasn't too surprised by it but it's always fun to experience it again. They ... read more
So by popular demand I was asked to set this up. I make no promises about how frequently I will be able to update the information here with stories and pictures but I will try my best. Time is winding down so hopefully I figure out how to use this site since I don't want to waste time on it when in Nepal. The plan My program in Nepal will starts October 3rd and ends November 28th. All I know is that it will have something to do with water sanitation projects. Here is a little bit of information about the the group: Environmental Camps for Conservation Awareness (ECCA) is a leading organization in the sector of social mobilization and community development. It implements various programs so as to raise the quality of life through wise-use ... read more
