Back in Antigua. We had a few spare days so we decided to spend a week travelling through Belize. No super special places but we had some great experiences chatting to the locals. It was a huge relief to be able to speak in English - to find out information and to just have a proper conversation with some of the people. Garifuna culture is big in the costal towns. They have a interesting history - basically they are decended from a bunch of slaves who revolted against the English who then herded them onto boats and dumped them on Roatan [View Full Entry]

Spanish Classes

We're on yet another caribbean island- Utila in Honduras this time, - full of divers. We met up with Donna's friends Carmo and Jenny and they went diving for a couple of days. I opted for the snorkelling. Quick update: Back in Nicaragua... got robbed again in Somoto while we were swimming at the cayon... someone broke into our room and stole Donna's camera and all of her cards. Luckily, they took my money out my wallet and left my atm card so we can still access cash. After that, headed out of Nicaragua to Tegucigulpa (capital of Honduras) to do [View Full Entry]

We´ve just finished a Spanish course - really hard work - 1 on 1 with really old school teaching- lots of word lists and grammar rules etc... We came back to our room one day and all our bags had been ransacked. They stole my camera and some money Donna had stashed. We told the hostel owner and she made a huge deal of it called the police and everything... Incidentally, the 3rd police report that I have filed so far. We were trying to make it all low key but they don´t seem to do low key here. The cleaner [View Full Entry]

Leon Central America Caribbean » Nicaragua » Leon
Leon´s a real arty city... but it´s a bit hard to get what´s going on as no-one speaks any English. Great art gallery - kind of an oasis in the middle of all the decaying colonial buildings... a guy walks in front of you and turns on the water fountains as you walk through the different rooms. They´re pretty into their poet Ruben Dario - there´s countless statues of him round town and the main street is named after him. Leon would have to be one of the hottest citys I have ever been in. The actual temperature is around 30 [View Full Entry]

After countless hours on chicken buses, river ferries, a rickety 12 seater plane, not to mention two police reports (certain members of our party went missing for 12 hours, later to be found stranded on ¨El Bluff a shipping port 1km of the mainland of Bluefields. The police officer did have the coolest name: Manuel Casanova), we have emerged from the Corn Islands and back into civilisation. We happened to arrive during one of the worst storms in years. We were stuck for several days without electricity and water, flights were cancelled and boat drivers were demanding danger money to leave [View Full Entry]
