We headed into the city first this morning to check out a cathedral. We had decided in the morning that we didn't need our rain jackets but sure enough once off the train at the cathedral it was raining. But we continued on and walked in the cathedral. I had decided to stay in Sydney a couple of days longer after mom and dad leave so we walked over to the YHA in Central Sydney and I booked in there. I was a bit unsure about wanting to just stay out in King's Cross on my own even though there are lots of hostels there. The YHA is a really nice one in a good area so I opted for that. We headed back down to Circular quay to catch our ferry to Manly. The path ... read more

We were up super early this morning to get on our Blue Mountains tour. Unfortunately the sun wasn’t cooperating but it wasn’t raining...yet. We walked down the street to the pick up point and hopped on the bus when It arrived. We drove around the area picking up all the other passengers. Our first stop was the Sydney Olympic park where the olympics were held here. We saw the ANZ stadium where the opening and closing ceremonies were held. Outside the stadium they put up some poles that had the names of all the volunteers who helped out during the olympics on them. I thought that was a really nice way to say thank you to the volunteers. We also saw the olympic torch. We then made our way out into the Blue Mountains region. We ... read more

Happy St. Paddy’s day!!! This morning we decided to head over to Paddy’s Market which is a big market in Central Sydney. We hopped on the train and switched trains at Town hall. We found our way to the market which is in the heart of Chinatown. The first thing we see when we walk in is hockey jerseys! Ice hockey for all you non-canadians haha. They were so cheap but good quality. $45 for an Iginla jersey!!!! I already have 3 flames jerseys so I didn’t need another one and no room in my backpack! Dad however found a dodgers jersey for $15 so he was really excited and bought one to wear down in Arizona when he goes to ball games. Most of the stalls were similiar or the same selling everything from ipod ... read more

We woke up to a sunny day. A lady that was on dad’s staff back in Calgary was also over to help out her daughter so we met her at King’s Cross train station. We bought ourselves a My mutli pass for 5 days which covers all of our travel on trains, buses and ferries in Zone 1 in Sydney which was an awesome deal. I definitely recommend getting one if you come to Sydney. Anyways, the 4 of us headed to the harbour. It’s so surreal being in a spot that you’ve seen so many pictures of. We decided to go to an aboriginal museum they have in The Rocks area so we walked up to the address we had for it but could only find an aboriginal art gallery. It was good for mom ... read more

We drove around Nelson bay to find the big sand dunes. We found them but you have to walk a long ways down the beach to get close to them so we didn’t go out to them. We did drive to another spot and ended up getting closer to the dunes. Pretty cool. We drove out of Nelson bay towards Newcastle. I wanted to stop in Newcastle to see it as my cousin Curtis lived there for a bit when he came over to Australia back in the day. We didn’t have a map of the area but just my guidebook to go off to tell us where the info center was. Well the 3 of us walked around looking for this stupid info center getting more and more frustrated, asking people if they knew. Finally ... read more

We packed up again and hit the road this morning. We made it to Port Macquirie for lunch time. It’s a beautiful spot right on the ocean. We stopped for some photos and then found the perfect lunch spot. On our way out of town we spotted another lighthouse so we went to check it out. Nice spot. We continued on our way when we hit another town and saw some huge Pelicans. They were massive! Had a little driving break there to watch the birds and then continued on. We had to stop for a bathroom break and we found a gas station with what appeared to be a replica of Ayers rock (Ulurulu) on top of it so of course we had to take some pictures. We decided that we would get to Nelson ... read more

We got ourselves all packed up and sadly left our beautiful apartment on the gold coast. We drove over to Janet's beach unit and we all walked down along the beach to the surf club for breakfast. It was a good last visit with Janet, Graham and Katie. We headed off down the coast again. We got to Byron Bay and lucked out getting a parking spot in the main part of town. We had a little walk around. It's a very artsy hip little beach town. Lots of backpackers around. We grabbed some stuff for lunch and stopped in at the information center. We decided to drive up to the lighthouse but we just took a look form the car as you had to pay to park up at the lighthouse. We got some good ... read more

We had a little sleep in this morning and decided that today would be another beach day. We walked down to our beach. Dad and I hopped in the water right away. The waves this time were a bit different. It was deep near the shore and then went really shallow for a ways (sand bar) and thats where the big waves were hitting. These waves scared me a bit more then the others. I liked being in the deeper water where you could just float with the waves. Mom came out with us for a bit. We walked back to the hotel and I hopped straight into the pool. It's such a nice pool! We got all cleaned up and had a snack and relaxed for the afternoon before walking over to the mall across ... read more

We decided to drive ourselves into Brisbane for the day and do the hop on hop off bus tour. Driving into Brisbane was easy enough but without a map we had a "fun" adventure of figuring out where to go to park our car and get to an information center. After finally parking the car we popped into the info center in the main shopping street. We bought our tickets to the bus tour and made our way to the first stop. We hopped on the bus and enjoyed the ride around the city and the commentary. The bus took us up to Mount Cootha which overlooks Brisbane and the river. We decided to hop off here and had a snack over looking the city. We hopped back on the next bus and rode it around ... read more

We woke up to a beautiful day and no desire to do anything too touristy so we threw on our bathing suits (Aussies call them cozzies or swimming costume). It's not a very far walk to the beach from our beautiful place so we got there in no time. We set up camp, threw our towels down and dad and I headed for the water. It was beautifully warm and yet refreshing from the heat. The waves were pretty big and quite powerful. They have flags set up on the beach to let you know where to swim with a lifeguard on duty. Apparently there are shark nets in the water but I didn't see any nets. There is also helicopters that are on "shark patrol" and fly up and down the beach looking for any ... read more
