I arrived by train into Melbourne from Bendigo. It's a short 2 hour train ride but there was a big AFL game on that day so the train was PACKED full of people going to the game. I met up with Leahanne and her friend George and we spent the day out shopping with George's kids. I spent my next day in the city looking around and trying to get my tax stuff sorted out. Then spent the next day sorting out my stuff and packing for Tasmania! I'm off there a week before spending my last week in Australia in Melbourne. ... read more

I hopped on a bus and made my way to Bendigo where my friend Jess and her husband live. Jess and I met back in Ireland. I hadn't seen her since St Kilda fest back in Feb so it was great to see her again. I used my time here mainly to just relax and catch up on my blog while Jess and Steve were at work. Jess and I did a bit of shopping on the weekend and she even took me to a candy shop that sells chocolate and candy from North America. I got very excited for that! Was really nice to spend some time with Jess and Steve one last time before I head out of Australia for the last time for who knows how long.... read more

I got in really early to Adelaide and got myself settled into my hostel. I took a walk to rundle mall which is a pedestrian shopping area. Had a look around but was so tired from getting no sleep on the night bus that I headed back to the hostel after getting some groceries. While having dinner I met an english girl and a kiwi guy and had a good chat with them and ended up spending the next day with the english girl when we headed to Adelaide's central market. It's a really awesome indoor market they set up that sells all kinds of food, cheese, meats, fruits and veg. Other then that it was a very relaxing time in Adelaide. I've attached pictures of my aboriginal art that I bought in Coober Pedy. Can't ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Coober Pedy September 3rd 2011

I hopped on yet another bus in the morning and headed out of the Northern Territory and down in South Australia. I got to Coober Pedy at 6:30pm. The hostel I was staying at came and picked me up from the bus station. I decided to stay at Radeka's underground hostel. Because of how hot it normally is in Coober Pedy a lot of the residents live in underground homes. It can get upwards of 50 degrees during the day and underground it stays a nice 24 degrees. In the winter it stays a nice 24 degrees as well so it's the perfect place to live. So I got checked in and headed underground. So cool! All the toilets, showers and kitchen are above ground but the dorm beds and some private rooms are all down ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Kings Canyon September 1st 2011

We had to get up early again, no sleeping in for us! After breakfast we drove over to Kings Canyon. This wasn't the hardest hike but it was a long one and walking on the same kind of rock that I fell on so I opted not to do the hike at the top but the easy hike in the bottom of the canyon. It was still a really nice walk. Once everyone was back we all had lunch together and then it was time to go back and pack up the camp. Then it was time to make the long journey back to Alice Springs. On the way we stopped at a roadhouse that also sells aboriginal art so we could have a look. We got back into Alice Springs and then hopped straight into ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Kata Tjuta August 31st 2011

We were all woken up really early so we could get to our viewing spot for the sunrise. We drove to our spot in mainly darkness and took a short walk up to the viewpoint which you can see Kata Tjuta and Uluru as the sun rises. There was a few clouds in the sky which made the pictures even more amazing! I think that the sunrise was even better then the sunset. We ate breakfast and then headed into Kata Tjuta which is another rock outcropping in the area also known as the Olgas. The hike in the area is called the Valley of the Winds. It's a beautiful valley. The hike isn't the easiest to do with broken ribs so me and the tour guide only did the walk up to the second lookout ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Uluru August 30th 2011

I was up early to be picked up by my tour. I met Florent and Stephanie at my hostel who were coming on the same tour and the 3 of us hit it off straight away. Florent is from France and Stephanie is from Germany. We had an interesting mix of people in group. Some older people and a few younger ones. We started heading out of Alice towards Uluru. We stopped to see "fooluru" but it was too smokey to see it. Fooluru is another big rock in the desert that looks similar to Uluru from one side and when they first opened up Uluru as a tourist thing people would get confused and think this place was Uluru and take their pictures and turn back to Alice Springs. It was so smokey because of ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Alice Springs August 29th 2011

On Sunday afternoon I hopped on another bus and drove down through the middle of Australia past Tennant Creek and finished up in Alice Springs the next morning. It was a really long journey and once again I didn't sleep much. I was picked up and taken to the hostel where I stayed and waited until my room was ready. The hostel has a dog name Roy roy and he was my buddy all morning sitting down at my feet and loving the attention I was giving him. Once I was able to check in I put my stuff in my room and headed off into the town center. First stop, the post office. On my way I met quite a few aboriginals who might look a bit scary but they just wanted to say good ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Darwin » City of Darwin August 27th 2011

A big reason why so many travelers come up to Darwin is because it is the gateway to Kakadu national park. I had always planned to go into Kakadu and Litchfield national parks when I came up here but with my ribs being broken it just didn't make sense to spend the money on going into these parks when I can barely enjoy them. Kakadu has more of the aboriginal culture in it with heaps of rock art that you have climb over rocks to get to. Litchfield is more about waterfalls and swimming holes. I'm really disappointed I had to miss these two parks but I think my ribs are thanking me. I caught a bus over to the free Darwin museum and art gallery which has some good displays of the area and a ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Darwin » City of Darwin August 25th 2011

Happy anniversary mom and dad!!! I hopped on another bus and arrived in Darwin in the early evening. I walked up the road to my hostel and was able to get some help getting my stuff up the stairs to my room. The next morning I headed off into town. There are some nice old buildings in Darwin. A few had been rebuilt after the bombing of Darwin city and the cyclone in the 1970's. My first stop was down by the waterfront. It's a really nice area with a netted off beachy area. It's netted off for crocs and stingers. The convention center as well as an outdoor wavepool is also down there. The wavepool looked like so much fun but not exactly ideal for someone with broken ribs. There are some WWII oil storage ... read more
