Now onto Calgary… I remembered hearing the saying that this city is supposed to be the most Americanized city of Canada and its something I fully believe. The downtown core is a great place to wander around checking out the funky and strange art sculptures… commissioned by the companies in the oil and gas industry. I suppose like many other downtown cores, it is a mixture of different levels of society. Downtown Calgary is fairly white collared yet while walking down the street you will probably pass by a homeless person sleeping on a cardboard box or people pan-handling for ch [View Full Entry]

Trees, Trees Trees
Heart Mountain ridge
Top of the World

As many of you know, I’m now pinned to the highly dry, sometimes fascinating but mostly boring law textbooks designed to reprogram my way of thinking until I begin to live, breathe and act like a lawyer. Due to this indoctrination process, I am forced to take what mini-adventures come my way. This blog will start off with a recap of the highly exciting Law Games in London, Ontario and digress into random thoughts on living in Calgary. Everyone loves pictures, and well, I permanently misplaced my camera in London. Therefore, you’re treated to pictures from the Heart Mountain hike j [View Full Entry]

okay, I'll get to the title of my blog in just a moment. The last couple days of this weekend trip have been one laugh after another. Where to start with my observations and ramblings... We rented a car and headed out to Skagway, Alaska on Sunday. Suprisingly, the town is only 180 km away from Whitehorse. and the South Klondike Highway was recommended by many to us for its scenic beauty. Luckily, we were not lead astray; it had just snowed and the mountain tops and treelines were covered in a fine sprinkling of snow. Next to us for most [View Full Entry]

So we've come in search of white horses but alas, the town was actually named after the water rapids that resembled the manes of white horses. Why Whitehorses of all places to visit? Well, Jo-ann and I found a great airfare deal to come up for the weekend including three nights hotel so we jumped aboard that deal. I think i have to take what adventures I can admist the negligence & liability, constitutional and property law thats bogging me down! It was evident on the flight that the great divide between Edmonton and Calgary extends to well, airplanes. Despite booking [View Full Entry]

Soccer Crazy!
Soccer Crazy!
this was our Lufthansa plane taking us back to Canada. The soccer nose was painted especially for the World Cup.
I'm sad to leave Turkey though I'm much relieved not to have to pay anymore for the privilege to use a squat toilet and then flush my business by hand with a water jug. As with all of my other trips to third world countries they always seem to give me the parting gift of serious travellers stomach upset. Janice and I both got it, and luckily I have ciprofloxin with me. We did contemplate going to get Janice her own personal antibiotics but that would require going to a hospital. Do they not have personal doctors operating out of small [View Full Entry]

Mm... apple tobacco!

After my last entry, I took a tour to Pamukkale about 3 hours inland from the Aegean Sea. Its famous for these calcium terraces created from the accumulation of calcium from the water running over it for about 15 000 years. A lot of it is dry now because of the negative effects from playing 4 and 5 star hotels at the top of the terraces but you can still walk around the smaller water pools on the top. It was probably the best amazing wonder I've seen on this trip so far. At the same place is a swimming area [View Full Entry]

and more
and more

ok that was a bit corny but I felt the need to. So far, I've been eating a lot of vegetarian cuisine with the odd bit of beef or lamb. Turkey has some tasty drinks which I've just been introduced to including the famous apple tea which is like an apple cider but less rich, and salep - its like a white hot chocolate, traditionally turkish, made from the root of a mountain orchid. Yesterday, we took a tour to Pergamon, famous for being the second largest library in antiquity, and when the library at Alexandria was burned, Marc Anthony ransacked [View Full Entry]

Ok... where did I leave off. We did a lovely cheapie tour in Santorini of the volcano Nea Kameni, a small island Thirassia, hot springs and Oia. I ended up doing a bit more hiking than expected on that tour. The volcano was pure uphill for about 45 minutes, Thira, Thirassia and Oia all have ports at the bottom of the hill. At Thirassia, the guide told us that it was only 150 steps to the top of the hill. What he failed to mention was that each step was between 0.5-3 metres long. If I hadn't run a half-marathon about [View Full Entry]

Someone obviously found the hike a bit more excruciating than I did.

We're on the fabulous island of Santorini. The population is about 2000 ppl according to Lonely Planet and I think that half of the population here must work in jewellry stores and tacky tourist shops. I'm a bit mystified by the number of jewellry stores here... do women get their men to buy them baubles on vacation?? I must admit that I had this misconception that Santorini was filled with these blue-domed buildings. These, I've actually only seen on churches. The rest of the buildings are white-domed but no worries... there seems to be a church every kilometre or so for [View Full Entry]
