The border crossing from Bolivia to Argentina was simple and didn’t take long. We jumped in a taxi that took us to the nearest bus station. Our luck was in, a bus was literally about to leave to the town we wanted to get to – Salta, about 6 hours south of the border. It was rather painful to part with the £18 each for the coach ticket - we paid £2.50 for a similar length journey in Bolivia! We were grateful for the smooth roads and comfortable bus though – a welcome improvement. There was also a drinks machine on board which Dan assumed just provided hot water. So we raid our supplies and found a tea bag stolen from breakfast and he went off to make a drink. He came back with a coffee ... read more

We crossed the border in a shared taxi from Peru to Chile in the opposite direction from what we had done 2 month previously. We arrived into Arica and got dropped at the bus station at around 8pm. We didn’t want to spend any time here; we just wanted to get to Bolivia, but we knew the Chile Bolivia border was only open during daily light hours so we were expecting to find a cheap hostel to spend the night before catching a bus the next morning. A quick scout around the bus terminal showed us that there was a bus leaving at midnight. We didn’t know how it would be crossing the border in the early hours, but keen not to waste time and to save on a nights’ accommodation, we booked 2 tickets. We ... read more

After the surprisingly smooth border crossing from Ecuador, we were dropped in the town of Tumbes at 9pm. A short tuk tuk ride took us to a public bus which was departing for Mancora, 2 hours south. It was again a very slow journey offering almost door to door service for the many locals on board. We eventually pulled into Mancora and managed to find a cheap hostel still open with a spare room. It felt great to finally arrive after 16 hours of frustratingly slow buses. We slept well that night and woke up the next day ready to explore the small town. Mancora is a rustic beach destination where you can surf. Again it was not a patch on the Caribbean but the weather was warm and the sea refreshingly cool. We spent the ... read more

It was a rather simple transition into Ecuador which involved a swift check through immigration and a taxi to the bus terminal. We barely had any time to decide which bus company was the cheapest before we boarded a rather shabby looking one and realised they were all cheap, what a treat! We were headed for Otavalo, famous for the largest crafts market in South America (The best and biggest being on a Saturday but we unfortunately arrived on Tuesday). The bus ride was an experience, at times there were more than 10 people on board all yelling trying to sell you everything from drinks to pizza to ice cream! We arrived into Otavalo and found a cheap hostel before heading out for dinner. Naomi and Steve recommended we have Chinese or ‘Chifa’ as in their ... read more

Sorry for the 2 month delay in getting this written and online, we quite simply have been having too much fun doing better things! Better late than never..... We caught a colectivo taxi across the border between Chile and Peru. It was fairly straight forward and our clocks went backwards by two hours due to the time difference. Tacna is a shabby looking border town, so the plan was to get a bus out asap - we were heading up to Cuzco to prepare for our Inca Trail trek. We arrived at the bus station with a Dutch couple we had shared the taxi with, we were approached by ticket touts, which usually we ignore, but for some silly reason we went with them this time. Bad move.... we had to pay for 2 taxi rides ... read more

We endured a very broken night’s sleep on the bus from Mendoza back to Chile, which involved a 2.30am border crossing, and the Chileans are pretty strict on what you bring in which meant about half the bus had their bags hand searched after they were scanned! 5am came around and the bus stopped, the lights came on, and everyone got off. We asked ‘Valparaiso?’ to the driver and he replied in Spanish in a positive way so off we got. We’d made a reservation at a hostel a bus or metro ride away, but given the early hour, public transport wasn’t yet up and running. We didn’t fancy a taxi due to expense and our Lonely Planet warning us they can be involved in scams, so we sat for an hour in the deserted bus ... read more

We travelled on a ‘Tur bus’ through the stunning Andes. We took loads of photos through the glass of the coach window – we’d have like to get out and take some properly. It was a landscape completely different to anything we’d seen so far, very dry, the only real vegetation being cactuses, and some of the steepest and windiest roads yet! Another new experience was the ‘in-flight’ coach service. We were handed blankets, pillows, a drink and some snacks, plus the bus was one of the comfiest yet (this mainly due to the massive investment in the transport system due to the railroads being broken up). The border crossing was fairly quick and simple, and we soon arrived into Mendoza – which was much larger than we were expecting. We’d book a hostel based on ... read more

We flew on a LAN night flight into Santiago airport. It was a good journey where Dan made full use of the free red wine! We landed bleary eyed and were quickly through customs and immediately faced with our new challenge – the language barrier! Between us we know very little Spanish and South American’s on the whole, speak very little English! We eventually worked out that we needed to catch a bus and the metro to get to our hostel on the other side of town, and with lots of pointing at maps and the help of a Spanish to English dictionary, we eventually made it. It was the middle of the afternoon and lovely and sunny but we were feeling a bit spaced out due to the jet lag (well we had flown back ... read more

Kia Ora! New Zealand, wow what a country! We landed into Christchurch airport and got a shuttle to a nice hostel with really comfy beds! Unfortunately, they didn’t supply bedding (well it was $2 more per night and we didn’t want to pay that), and we assumed we’d be fine with our sleeping bag liners and stolen Jetstar blankets (from the aeroplane), how wrong we were! New Zealand is COLD! We had 2 nights here to explore the city, and the first thing that struck us was how small and empty it felt! We treated ourselves to a meal out on Valentine’s Day, in the romantic setting of Wagamamas! We also hit the shops in search of winter clothes – Laura bagged a bargain – some brand new Levis jeans for £11 from a charity shop ... read more

We flew into Fiji on ‘the world’s friendliest airline’ – Air Pacific. We were pretty impressed with the service, 2 complimentary drinks in the first half hour, decent sandwiches for lunch and plenty of leg room. It was almost a shame the 3 hour 50 minute flight wasn’t longer! We landed at Nadi airport and were disappointed to find it throwing it down with rain. We were soon smiling once more when we entered passport control and were greeted by a 4 man band singing us a welcome to Fiji song! We caught a shuttle bus to a hostel called ‘Smugglers Cove’ which we planned to be a stopover before heading out to the much prettier islands the following morning. Unfortunately we had arrive too late to book our boat which resulted in us having to ... read more
