An important blog
It is too easy to leave common sense at home when taking a holiday or travelling. The world is not as dangerous as portrayed by the media or by people who have not travelled to that destination - the greatest danger is usually ourselves.

Laura, Thank you for sharing your interesting stories:) I always enjoy your blog as it makes me want to experience the same thing at first hand. This time, it wasnt though. Everything you wrote was pretty much what I did. But it was very interesting to know how YOU viewed it. it must be painful for you to go through the same thing as a teacher ha ha. Lots of discipline thingy to witness. I cant wait to read more about your experiences - in London and Europe! Maybe I will get on workholiday visa and stay in London for while if I do get tired of my current job and hunt for more excitement. It's been almost 10 freaking years since I started working here :P Well, just wanted to catch up with you here - could done it on the facebook, but oh well. I miss you, and I hope I will get to see you one day! Love, Yoko

Grandma Dorr would be curious and proud!
Hello daughter; always enjoy your blog and pictures. Hope you can sample the cucumber Goya pickles and report back. This time of year Grandma Dorr would be canning peaches, pears, pickles; the already hot kitchen would become steamier with batches on the stove and smell of dill everywhere! Love, mom

ah tororo
I remember the first time I had tororo while I was living in Sendai, man it was so hard to eat. It was like the first time I ate okra, I just told myself to ignore the slime and try to get a taste of the yam. It helped, but only a little. I have yet to at tororo again. If you do, good on ya!

It's not the heat, it's the humidity?!
A favorite Minnesota weatherman explanation for hot, sticky summer days! I suspect it is both heat/humidity in Japan now. Try this trick from current women's soccer players; cold, wet towels on the back of the neck. Today, for World Cup Women's soccer viewing; US vs France; later, Japan! vs Sweden! Who would've thought Japan knocked out Germany, a favorite and the home team! Who knows, Japan & US could meet for the championship this weekend! Enjoy your blogs!

Hi Laura, Just stumbled across your blog and although it does deal with indeed a serious subject, just wanted to say thanks for writting it in the way you did. It is an excellent entry and one that should be read by all. Do travel/ work myself in difficult places, where security is often a concern, and time to time hearing stories of travelers, I am really wondering whether some just switch off what would be back home common sense. Traveling is one of the best thing that can happen to everyone, an eye opener, but yes just like back home, being a little cautious makes the big difference. Thanks for reminding fellow travelers about this in your blog and keep writting ! Cheers, Laetitia
