two sides ... - From: Beauty and the Beast : Two Sides of Rio
Dear Sir, On February 17-21, I and four friends stayed at the Marina Place Hotel in the Leblon area in Rio De Janiero. On my last day there I had US$500 (1000 Real) stolen from my "safe" deposit box in my hotel room. On my last morning in the hotel (February 21), I went to the beach and informed the receptionist that i would be no longer than one hour and could she keep my key and glasses at the front desk. When I returned, half of the money in my safe was gone although they spared me my camera, credit cards and passport. When I told the manager about this situation, he informed me that the only people that know the security code are managers. We exchanged glances and I suggested that perhaps that says it all. I am told they have video cameras on each floor and that these pictures are being "reviewed". I feel that it is important for travellers to know that these so called "safe" deposit boxes in the rooms are not so safe and I would caution any one from placing too much trust in the integrity of the Marina Place Hotel management.

wonderful adventure - From: Chasing the Liberator - Patagonia
wow, you guys have had one hell of a trip! i just wanted to add something about bernardo o'higgins. despite what wikipedia may say, he did not found the city of punta arenas. punta arenas (the oldest chilean city in patagonia) was founded in 1843, but o'higgins died in 1842, exiled in peru. both argentina and chile disputed the southern region of south america and the area was only divided between the two countries around 1880, while chile was fighting bolivia and peru in the war of the pacific. bolivia and peru were hoping to draw argentina into the confilct against chile. argentina would have attacked in the south and taken all of what is now southern chile. chile knew it could not defeat all three countries, so in a treaty with argentina, chile renouced all claims to what is now the argentine patagonia (it had previously claimed al this land to the atlantic) and the boundaries between the two countries were set, similar to what they are today. o'higgins wanted chile to expand southward but the chilean patagonia was only secured around 1880, but he was long dead when this actually took place and didn't actually do any of it himself. cheers, and enjoy the rest of your time in south america!

HAPPY XMAS GUYS! - From: A short little blog about nothing
Oooh those Hundertwasser loos take me back to our Vienna antics! Have a fantastic Xmas wherever you find yourselves (mainly because I'm looking forward to the Xmas Omnibus edition of your blog... but also cos we miss you and are thinking of you I suppose... a bit) PS Celeb note: as you are now vagabond dirtbags you might not be aware that you will need to return with some exotic adopted baby with a suitably miserable past in order to make it back into the A list echelons. Oh and Katie & Pete wanted me to ask you if they could name their new kid after you? They're thinking of combining your initials and call it PC Junior the Second (can't confuse Junior #1) PPS Any sign of Mustafa? Been getting heavy breathing calls and anonymous hate mail stamped in Chile, keep your eyes open!

Chinese History - From: So long Hong Kong
Good- News. Politicians getting the airtime they deserve. We got a 3 hour speech on Taiwan relations by Hu Jintao live on all the channels. I was riveted. Bad- Chinese rewriting of history. Mongolia's part of china a few people told us. Their Logic? Mongols invade China and set up the Yuan dynasty out of Beijing 800 years ago. Therefore they are a Chinese minority really. Come join the motherland right now! So that makes all English people French right? Well the Queens German. Bad- Tour groups being led around by flag. I wanted to nick one and walk over a cliff and see if they still followed me.

Great commentary on the pictures. Lovin' the architecture but to be honest my favourite photos are the pixie boot lady and Tatu! Sounds so cool so far, glad the Russians are only cranky on the outside. Try and get a close up picture of one with soot on his/her face. That would probably make me narky aswell.
