Glasgow University African centipede
Liked the picture of the "centipede" but it's actually a millipede! Millipedes have 2 pairs of legs per segment, are slow moving, curl up in defence, are vegetarian and practically harmless; centipedes have 1 pairs of legs per segment which stick out to the side, are very fast, are predators and are venomous. Look on the web and you will find plenty of pictures of actual centipedes, though a number of cases of people thinking millipedes are centipedes - both in the class Myriapoda, but centipedes then belong to the Chilopoda and millipedes to the Diplopoda.

Leaving stuff in a tent
We left our sleeping bags and mats in the tent, without any issues. I am not sure of the overall theft rate on that island, but we never really worried about it while we were there. Have fun. I'm sure you will love the island. I can't wait to get back.

biking with no vehicle?
Thanks for sharing your trip! My sweetie and I are planning our trip and your sharing is the most helpful so far. We are thinking of not renting a vehicle and just bike touring (camping maybe staying someplace if we get lazy one night). The only disadvantage being no place to lock things in if we go for a day leaving our tent. Sound like a okay idea if we don't bring valuables, or sound like not such a good plan in your opinion (or anyone else's thoughts) We'll be there end of Jan -Feb for 9 days. Warmly, Robin

Just checking in. . .
Hi Lani, I hope you get this. Since I didn't hear from you, I was thinking you might have gotten my email wrong, or something. Either that or you simply decided I was someone you didn't want to contact. Hopefully it isn't the later. Anyway, my email is rosborne@maui.net or roberto@kula.us I thoroughly enjoyed getting you know you over the course of the time we spent together. You are a great hiking companion, and the conversation was great. I hope you stay in touch, as I'd love to explore more if it every works out. Drop me an email if you wish, so I can get your address. I hope you are doing well. Robert

almost neighbors
Hi, this is Julie, my family and i were stationed at Izmir from 1995 to 1997. Looking at the photos from you apartment looks very familiar to me, especially the walk platz area. It is fun to look back and all the memories of living in Izmir.

Gifts for Turkish people
Show your appreciation and love of their country. It is very important to them that everyone loves it there. I'm sure you won't have a problem with that. In addition, any little american name brand trinkets or american snacks. They really have everything we have, and more, so it is difficult to bring something. I know a new GAP store that was opening there was all the rage. Have a great time.

Nice journal!
I am soon heading to Izmir for a year. I enjoyed reading your take on it, especially the comparisons to California since that's where I'm from. Very nice pictures as well, and I'm still laughing about the Japanese "camera man". DT

Aloha
Aloha again! Eddie remembers the person you described with the pitbulls and vehicles. He was a young man who was homeless and Eddie had to tell him on more than one occasion that he could not live in the parking lot. We look forward to your visit to Molokai in 2009. Take care!

Mahalo Susan!
I am so glad this made it to you. I tried calling "Koa" about the tickets, but his phone had been disconnected. I have no idea. I think he drives a white car and raises pit bulls. He said he was 29. We really loved talking to Eddie. Please say hello for me. I will be back the summer of 2009 and I would love to meet you.

Aloha Lani, Glad you enjoyed your stay on Molokai! My niece forwarded your blog to me, because she knows Eddie (her uncle) and I'm his girlfriend. I mentioned this blog to Eddie and he remembers the two of you very well. Just wanted to let you and others know that at the time of your visit Eddie was a Park Security officer for Wackenhut. That was his part-time job on weekends. Permits are required when camping in county parks on Molokai (info for future visitors). Security will log it down for other Park Security officers and provide a description of campers, vehicle license, etc. so your party was probably not asked for it again, especially if you were the only ones there. Eddie never issued a notebook paper ticket (haha). Park Security officers cannot issue tickets, they'll give warnings, and will call Law Enforcement officers only if needed. None of us know who Koa is, so we're curious to know if you ever got those tickets to his fights? Unfortunately, Koa was the one who was spinning tales and quite possibly Koa may not have even been his real name. So now we're asking around if anyone knows a guy named Koa who is an Ultimate Fighter. Molokai isn't so small that we wouldn't hear about someone becoming an Ultimate Fighter! Eddie isn't known as Short Eddie, but the story is funny!

No Louvre :(
Sad to say, but we never even went in the Louvre. We didn't feel like standing in the forever long queue to get in. Maybe next time. When the dollar is better, I want to go back and spend more time. A few days is just not enough.

Living Through You!
Nt travels or somewhat these days so I enjoying see your blog. It is hard to get a good picture of some things like Notre Dame. You just can not capture that in the lens it seems. At least I was never comfortable with my pics of it. I did not see the cemetery when I was there. It looks interesting. Did you enjoy the Louvre. I just went to the 3 big things and then went and saw the Dutch painters work. How long did you spend in the Louvre? Best wishes and keep the bogs coming!

Wow!
Lani, I can only imagine how you felt trying to communicate with the village woman who gave you all her stuff. I am going to Turkey in October; what kinds of things do you think I could bring to give as little gifts to the people I meet, like that woman did? What an experience!

I even doubled back through your blog to skim the US stuff too. Very nice. Very readable. Brilliant stuff, keep going! Raf

What Fun You Have!
Dear Lani - just googling around the world - typed in Lehua Sammons and got your blog instead! Your story was incredible - so much for going home in August I guess. I know you all have been on the cruise, but did you stay in FL or head on back to the islands! Oh, how I wish I could go back! Let me know where you are and what you're doing world traveler. Lehua said she came home so sick after the cruise - and just crawled out of it about the 5th of Jan. Hope to hear from you soon. Judy G

C'mon down
Yes, T or C is an interesting place. I've been coming down since 98' and have been involved in some of the changes downtown. I own the "Firebox" studio/gallery. It's a pottery studio and gallery, with a hot spring in back. There is also a music yard with a stage where locals play on sundays, weather permitting. Don't be shy, you'll love it. Spring comes early February.
