Since the beginning of the program, Bill told us that we would be changed. I've been anxiously awaiting this change to occur ever since orientation. I thought it would be the gradual kind, the kind that I'd notice only when I arrive back in the US and try to live life like I did before. I was wrong. I now know what that change is. I understand what needs to change in myself. It's up to me to enact it, though. At the moment, the change is internal, a guilty nagging that is begging me to pay attention and do something. Here's how it started... On the busride home from hanging out with my friends on Monday night, I had a long talk with Andrei. He was denouncing SIT for the ridiculously small amount of money ... read more

So, I just figured out that if I change my IP address and do all kinds of funky complicated computer stuff, I can get internet access here at school in Fortaleza. Anyway, here's the email that I sent out a couple days ago... and the best part... PICTURES!!! Hello all, I'm officially in Brasil, sitting in a tiny internet cafe about 5 blocks from my house here in Fortaleza. Wow, it's weird to be thinking in English. I've been totally immersed in Portuguese for the last few days. My new family speaks not a word of English or Spanish, so I'm on my own to learn Portuguese ASAP! So far I'm doing ok, but I speak more a mix of Portuguese and Spanish, Portuñol, than actual Português. My host family is amazing, though. Let me tell ... read more

Have you ever been hungry and full, dizzy and steady, happy and sad, angry and relaxed, nervous and calm, tired and wired all at once? That is what I am right now. I have butterflies in my stomach! My flight is on time as scheduled. My suitcases are packed and ready to go. I feel like Jack Kerouac's characters as they leave New York for their roadtrip across the country. Do I have any idea what I'm getting myself into? Frankly, no. At the moment, though, it doesn't even matter. My passport is stamped with the Brazilian VISA and I'm booked on a flight for tomorrow. We're leaving the house first thing in the morning for JFK Airport. I don't have a choice! Then again, of course I want to go! All the other participants sound ... read more

It's been a long summer. I never thought I'd want a summer to go faster, but I can't wait for it to end. In a little less than two weeks, I'm getting onto a plane to Brazil!! Ah! And I won't set foot in the United States for another 11 months. It's weird to even think about that. I just won't. I'll think about it tomorrow (anyone? famous character?) Here's what I've done this summer... First I said goodbye to all of my friends from school. As usual, that took place in party format. Once summer had begun, I worked a LOT at Papa Razzi and attempted to maintain an internship in NYC. Unfortunately, the internship was a bit of a disappointment. I did make lots of money at the big PR, though. Kaity and Matt ... read more

One more exam... My walls are white and posterless. Moriah has stripped her side of pictures and books. All that's left are duffel bags and our bedding. Ugly! This is what it looked like before we packed... The reason I'm starting this travel blog is because I'm going to be all over the Western Hemisphere in the next year. Thursday, my mom and I are leaving St. Louis and driving home, so that covers a bunch of states east of the Mississippi. This summer, I'm so excited to be working at North American Congress on Latin America (NACLA). It's only the most widely-read English-language publication on Latin America in the United States! I'll be doing editing, research, and maybe a little writing. To make some money, I'll be waitressing on the side. I hope I get ... read more
