Kylie H - Kylie Hartshorne

Kylie Hartshorne Good-bye! I am leaving these fair shores (London) for a bit of a trot around the global for the next 9 months. Along with seeing some brilliant sites and learning a great deal, no doubt there will be many strange occurrences and bizarre happenings along the way ...

The Sunday after the wedding (see previous blog) we went on a bus ride to Mexico City - it was excellent, we practically had business class aeroplane seats and 2 x movies - fantastic! After a short taxi ride across town we arrived at yet another lovely hotel (Condesa Haus, I would highly recommend it) which had a four legged bath in the room, in the very pretty suburb of Condesa. Sadly we found out we were in for 3 days of (light) rain in Mexico City ... never mind. We started our first day by waiting 45mins for the Turibus, [View Full Entry]

After 14hrs + of travel and a transit through the US (always painful), we arrived in Chihuahua, Mexico and we drew the short straw when Scott’s bag was ‘chosen’ to be searched. After finding nothing of interest we were on our way to a cute little hotel and rather than the usual washing of car windows at the traffic lights we were treated to some fire dancing entertainment - great! Through a haze of tiredness we headed out for a quick dinner, whist looking for a recommendation we stumbled across a local place serving cold margaritas and good local fare outside, [View Full Entry]

Just back from a weekend down in the New Forrest, we set off Friday evening arriving by train into Brockenhurst about 9. Our B&B was award winning, but probably for service, certainly not for space. We were in the smallest room, but nice and cosy. I had a bit of a cough thing going on so probably woke up the entire place the following morning. We were treated to a local full English breakfast, veggie in my case. Stuffed full of local fare we headed out to hire a bike, side stepping all the horse poo. There were actually horses running [View Full Entry]

Ferraris, Fins and a big crash Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Milan
Scott and I, plus a couple of friends set off for the F1 race in Monza, Italy aboard a rather freaky flight. The plane banked left on take-off then appeared to be flying rather low, then banked left again and dropped suddenly. There were a few screams, and maybe a yelp from me. But gladly we landed in Milano safely 90mins later. We leap quickly into a cab and said NH hotel as fast as you can, the man drove FAST. Part way into the journey and the meter well over 50 euro we soon realised that perhaps we were not [View Full Entry]

What would Putin do? Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik
Somehow the theme of this trip ended up being ‘What would Putin do?’, strange but true. Scott and I, plus two good friends Adam and Myles headed for Croatia for 10days of sun, island hopping and bottles of Croatian’s finest vino (read horrid). We set out early Saturday morning with my work laptop backpack full of clothes, the night before we had a minor disaster. After our Sri Lanka trip we decided to throw away Scott’s backpack, clean forgetting this fact I merrily lent by backpack to Adam and it wasn’t until 11pm Friday evening we realised our predicament. As part of a work trip I was able to spend a day running around Bucharest to have a look at a few bits and pieces. I was lucky enough to be staying at one of the nicest hotels, so started the day with a swim in the stunning bean shaped pool before heading out on a tour, it was a very hot day. First we went to the square where it all kicked off back in 1989, revolutionary square. Old Nicolas and his wife were captured on the top of a building trying to escape the people and where soon [View Full Entry]

Scott and I had a frantic start to the weekend in Norway as I had just flown back from Krakow after being there all week for work. However, we were having better luck than the guy in front of us as we entered security checks at Gatwick, who heard the one thing you dread … ‘Sir, you’re at the wrong airport’. Oh dear, that guy didn’t have a chance in hell making it to Luton for his flight home, what a nightmare! Given the time of year it wasn’t dark when we arrived around midnight, there was still some light in [View Full Entry]

That is exactly right; we went fly fishing and then hawking in Dartmoor on a quick weekend break in the country. Early doors Saturday morning we head down country to Exeter St David’s, then took a bus to Mortonhampstead, from there a taxi to Bovey Castle. A beautiful estate with a world class golf course set on the out skirts of Dartmoor National Park. We had lunch on the terrace of the castle on a bright sunny day. After that we meet Paul our fly fishing instructor. We learnt the ins and outs of casting, flicking the wrist, making the line [View Full Entry]

Scott’s parents were over in Europe for a few weeks and we all went to Zagreb and Sarajevo for the long Bank holiday weekend. Setting out late Friday evening, we arrived in to Zagreb just before 11 and then managed to get a bus into the city and then a taxi to our pokey little hotel. It was central so we forgave it for being tiny. The following morning we went out walking to the main square where there was a large statue of a man on a horse surrounded by huge billboards for Ray Bans, Pepie Jeans and other similar [View Full Entry]

It was Easter long weekend, and Scott, Kara, Jonson and I had been planning to cycle Hadrian’s Wall (World Heritage Site) for quite some time. However, when booking the train up to Carlisle and back from Newcastle I didn’t book bike slots for the bikes. Thus our biking holiday turned into a hiking holiday. What is Hadrian’s Wall I hear you asking, well back in the Roman times, they built a wall from one side of the UK to the other to protect themselves from the Scottish. It was 174miles from the coast near Newcastle to Solway on the Irish Sea. [View Full Entry]
