This workshop business is exhausting. The moment we get back from dinner I lie down and go to sleep, sometimes unintentionally. Last night Sophie and I were lying in our beds and heard a tap dripping really loudly and rather than walk the 6 feet to the bathroom to investigate we decided to shirk our environmental responsibility and just pass out. The electricity has been really unreliable for the past two days, and without the white noise of our fan I was woken up fairly early by the call to prayer from the mosque in town. It's funny how you become [View Full Entry]

"Baggy langu!"

 Africa
The previous entry was FINALLY published successfully. We spent all day at the Centre today, and I was so looking forward to sharing some stories, but now my brain feels like mush. Eight hours of removing safety scissors form the hands of a four year old will do that to you. This must be why pre-school is only half a day, and they upgrade to a full day of Kindergarten when the children are five and can therefore wield sharp obects with more caution (or at least some caution). Seriously, Frankie is driving us bonkers. We'll be filming some incredibly poignant [View Full Entry]

Wishing basket

 Africa » Tanzania » North » Moshi
**This entry has deleted itself/not published about ten times (actually only 4), so here is my last desperate attempt to publish it two days after it was written. I have found wireless internet, and am able to work on my lap top. The good news is that it is faster than almost all the dial up connections in town. The bad news is that I can no longer blame my typos on the keyboard, and someone in Dubai is probably stealing my identity. When I log on it takes me to Google Nigeria. Enough said. We have moved into a hotel [View Full Entry]

"I'm see...love"

 Africa » Tanzania » North » Moshi
As a disclaimer, I managed to find the only disfunctional keyboard in the internet cafe, so please excuse creative punctuation and spelling - some keys are missing or not working. The shift key is also MIA and this capslock business is seriously slowing down my creative energy. Ah well. The title to this entry is different than originally planned - read on to see why! First of all, my flights here were uneventful. This is almost unheard of...in fact many people who fly with me once refuse to do so a second time. Between massive delays, lost luggage, and terrorist threats, [View Full Entry]

"You husband one bed?"

 Africa » Tanzania » North » Moshi
Just a quick note to say that things are a bit difficult at the moment and so there may not be any more updates until I've returned to Canada. Some of the boys are having a hard time dealing with my impending departure and handling it in very different ways. Yesterday Lineka spent hours drawing me pictures and not only allowed me to take his picture, he also REQUESTED a hug when I left (he is usually extremely shy). Then today he told me, "I don't love you" and refused to do anything in school, which was completely out of character. [View Full Entry]

"manure...you touch?"

 Africa » Tanzania » North » Moshi
Chapati making was postponed as new grass is being planted near the cooking shed outside, and so we had to dig up some manure for fertilizer. Frankie got tired and sat in a manure bucket singing "I like to move it move it" from the movie Madagascar. Some new cow food was dropped off right before I arrived, and it is the leaves from peanut plants and many of them still have the peanuts at the bottom so we spent a while digging through the pile looking for peanuts as well. When I say pile I mean small hill that was [View Full Entry]

Alright, here comes a massive update in record time because I am scheduled to make chapatis this afternoon with Eli. I don't really know where to start. A few weeks ago the boys were all scheduled to have HIV tests. I came out of my "classroom" (a small room between the kitchen and younger boys' bedroom) and there was a lot of commotion in the living room. Margaret, the Tanzanian director, was there explaining something in Swahili, and Kelvin came running up to me saying, "Miss Kyla, Miss Kyla, you poke?" and pointing to his arm. Then everyone started laughing and [View Full Entry]

poor timing

 Africa » Tanzania » North » Moshi
Just made it to an internet cafe after taking the boys swimming, and it is closing in five minutes. Will try and get some internet time at the house later, but with a new batch of volunteers, there is heavy internet traffic. Things are quite busy because I only have one week left. The boys and I are swimming and cooking a lot in the afternoons, which is fantastic, and has provided plenty of funny stories that will have to be recounted later. I also went to Zanzibar last weekend, so there is much to tell. I'll do my best to [View Full Entry]

Quick update

 Africa » Tanzania » North » Moshi
To those who may be concerned, the lack of updates can mainly be accounted for by illness and sorting out course registration on very slow internet. After spending an evening in an outdoor hospital being poked with needles by nuns, I do not have malaria, but just as with everything, was told it might be "early stages". Rather than take the medication I was "greatly encouraged" to buy, I spent a day sleeping and my temperature dropped, and now I am just coughing. This results in my boys saying "bless you" about fifty times a minute because they have just learned [View Full Entry]
