I went to San Francisco! The end. But really, I'm having writer's block with the added distraction of a new trip to plan. Before I get into those juicy details, I'll do my best with the tales from my latest trip. The morning after the Superbowl, still buzzing from the high of a glorious win, Christy and I packed up Fireball (our new name for her little red Honda Fit) and ventured north to San Francisco. We stopped for gas and food and pictures in front of Andersen's Pea Soup, but otherwise the drive was smooth and uneventful. Our host for the week was none other than Brian**, the "stranger" I met on my flight back to San Diego from my visit home. Thus, we found ourselves couchsurfing in a three-bedroom, two-bath, apartment smack in the ... read more

Hola! My apologies on taking an eternity to write, my trips in the past few months have been more personal than pleasure based. I went home in late October/early November for a lovely autumn visit with family and friends, and then up to Northern California in December for a white Christmas. But these trips were not quite enough to cure my travel bug, so by mid-January I was getting stir crazy and fixated on my next international adventure: Mexico. Now to residents of Southern California, Mexico is the normal weekend getaway. Everyone has crossed over the border at some point in their life, even if just for some Coronas on a lunch break. It's just not a big deal! I suppose I could compare it to Canada for anyone up north, except there's a lot less ... read more

Last time I wrote about my second trip to the Grand Canyon. Since then I haven't had the opportunity to go on any trips, at least not outside of my county. I have, however, had a very eventful month! Back in August I made several big changes to my life in California. Not all of these turned out to be good choices, but I have learned some important lessons. For starters, I learned that a job in the scuba department of a retail store, is still a job in a retail store. The hours are long, the work is boring, the customers are grumpy, and management treats you like a faceless number. After a few short weeks I felt like I had grasped the bulk of available knowledge and that my growth was at its peak. ... read more

Alas, another month, another adventure! Last week my co-worker and travel companion, Christy, and I decided to one-up our spontaneous camping trip with a spontaneous canyon trip- a 72-hour roundtrip blur of an adventure to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back between work shifts. To put that in perspective for you it went something like this: work a full day-> drive 9 hours from Carlsbad to Tusayan-> sleep for 4 hours at the top of the canyon-> hike down 3 hours to the Colorado River-> spend 42 hours hanging out with the crazy ranchers at Phantom Ranch-> hike out 5 hours back to the top-> drive home 9 hours and go to bed so we could get up for work the next day. Needless to say it was not a relaxing vacation, but an ... read more

Happy September! The past month has been an absolute whirlwind. Some of the highlights include: Visiting my father at his conference in Pasadena, getting free VIP tickets to the Jay-Z/Beyonce On The Run tour, taking a spontaneous camping trip to Joshua Tree National Park, reconnecting with old friends and making new ones, finding a second job in the scuba department at a sporting goods store, going diving, studying for my advanced certification, and finding an affordable and adorable new apartment. I won't bore you with all the stories behind the events, so if you want more details check out my new blog here: http://leaveandexplore.wordpress.com/ or send me a private message (especially if you need my new address!) Now for the good stuff- the infamous spontaneous camping trip aka "SCT". My co-worker Christy and I de... read more

A month do the day after my last blog post....at least I'm consistent in my silence! I won't lie, I've been cheating on this blog...I'm having a love affair with my new blog "Leave and Explore". It's very different, more reflective and personal, a bit more nitty gritty on my serious thoughts and opinions on the vagabond lifestyle, as opposed to simple accounts of actual trips. I highly encourage you all to check it out and follow me here: http://leaveandexplore.wordpress.com/ As always, I value your input. It is fairly recent, still working out which direction I want to take it. But I find it fun to write, so I guess that's the important bit! Now I have a Sparknotes version of my most recent adventure for you... In early July, shortly after a little red, white ... read more

I wish I actually got around to writing my blogs at the exact time I thought about writing my blogs! But of course, my last blog was behind schedule, and thus this one is long beyond overdue, so you'll just have to imagine this is a current event.... it still feels like yesterday to me! On a Monday afternoon at the end of May, my co-worker and fellow New Englander, Christy, and I set out on an epic adventure. We hopped in Christy's fuel efficient vehicle and cruised our way east. We danced to each other's music, shared stories, and enjoyed the vast, empty space of the wild west. Eight hours after our departure, we arrived at our intended destination: Tusayan, Arizona. This little town is best known for its proximity to one of the seven ... read more

Another month, another adventure! This time, a little more local- I stayed within the same state! But California is a large state, so it was still a solid 8-hour drive from Carlsbad up to Yosemite National Park. On Friday afternoon, my friend Grant and I loaded up his car with food and gear and set out on a road trip. We made the long haul through all the LA traffic and cruised north until we hit mountains and endless stars. We arrived very late (I guess technically very early the next day), so we parked on the side of the road and created a make shift sleeping space in the trunk. We were up with the sun the next morning, despite only a few hours rest. We cruised into Yosemite National Park and wound our way ... read more

As always, it has been too long. Which in this case is a good thing, as it means I've been busy! It has now been exactly three months since I arrived in California, so let me catch you up to speed... I moved in, furnished my room, had a job interview at SEA LIFE, joined a gym, landed a seasonal job at SEA LIFE, decided to learn Spanish, started working, started working out, started to hang out with people from work outside of work, got bumped up to a part-time (read: permanent) position at SEA LIFE, started running again, continued practicing my Spanish, planned lots of social gatherings with co-workers, and most recently, applied for and landed an educator position at SEA LIFE. Basically my days are spent alternating between work, exercise, beer, and sleep- and ... read more

Greetings from Carlsbad, California!! It's no longer a secret- my newest adventure is within the US (crazy, I know). I moved in with my friend from Rollins, Bri, and her fiancé Trevor. Oh, and their cat, Ted. I made the decision to move out here after I visited in November; not only is the weather generally some of the best in the country year round, but also living 2 blocks from the ocean provides plenty of opportunities from Marine Biology work. I already miss family and friends back home, but my gypsy soul needs a new horizon. I am toying with the idea of starting a "career", or at the very least gaining some useful experience to bulk up my resume. So let me back up and tell you about my epic journey through 18 states, ... read more
