Berlingo packed, we headed off on stage 1. We'd spent a bit of time planning where to go with a variety of maps and guide books and had decided to head for Daroca. A small heritage listed town in the hills, it was supposed to a bit off the tourist trail, but excellent and worth a visit. This road seemed great, at least until we noticed that we were heading straight towards a huge fire. Soon enough, a policeman waved us down and informed us the road was closed. No problem, we thought, as we tried out the 'avoid roadblock' function on the TomTom. After it had taken us down a few actual goat tracks and up a couple of driveways trying to get us to Daroca we gave up on it, and changed our destination. ... read more

Heathrow was better to be leaving than arriving. We picked up some duty free grog – Klaire had been converted to Pimms while in London, and I was running low on Havana Club. The flight was one of the shortest we'd had, then we landed in Barcelona. We had to wait a couple of hours for the next group of older travellers. My parents had their turn at travelling with us, now it was time for Klaire's to have a go. The airport was interesting as these sort of hub airports often are. People from all over the place were moving around, many many different languages being spoken. I was glad that I could still understand Spanish after a 3 week hiatus, although the accent was a bit strange. We also watched with disappointment as groups ... read more

We packed our bags with concern that morning. We had added a fair bit of camping gear to our load, and it was a worry for people used to carrying their stuff on their backs. We would be staying with Simon and Tracey (friends of ours from Australia) for a few days in London, so it was easier to drive our stuff back there, drop the car off at Heathrow, then catch a train back. I was only a little sad dropping off the Kia – we really hadn't had a chance to get to know each other. It hadn't been a bad little car, but definitely not one I would choose for myself. Happily, the rental car bloke at the airport didn't pick up the scratches I had added to the wheels - probably because ... read more

The following day was mainly a driving day. We headed into Wales and this meant we would get a break from heritage sites – our card was only for England and we were too tight to pay to see anything else. Not too tight, though, to try and avoid the toll bridge from Cornwall to Wales – we're talking an extra 4 hours on the trip. We were in Wales. Not a lot different to England, this southern part – pretty country, lots of pubs called the Red Lion - save that the BBC Cymru station was in Welsh – truly a wacky language. Somebody needs to donate these people some vowels. We made our way to the coast and found ourselves in the tiny town of Newgale. The name was appropriate – the wind was ... read more

We gave ourselves plenty of time to get to the airport, and our traffic fears were well founded. The airport was reasonable. A bit of construction happening to get ready for 2014, but other wise it was as airports are. We waited, we ate, we looked at stuff, we got on a 747. The flight was okay if shorter than we thought. We were too busy playing with the entertainment system to listen to the pilot rabbiting on and missed his talk about flight time. No worries – it was on the screen – 14 hours. Sweet. That means I can watch X amount of movies and sleep for Y. Only the clock on the screen was wrong – it was only 10 hours. Landing at Heathrow with 4 hours sleep wasn't part of the plan. ... read more

Foz do Iguaçu, or Iguazu Falls, was supposed to be one of the most impressive sights in the world. We had already decided that to do Brazil justice would require far more time than the week we had, so we had decided to leave the country for another day. There was time, however, to see Iguazu. The bus was pretty straight forward from Campo Grande and we arrived in Foz do Iguaçu to find a place to stay. The place we had booked was weird. It had once been a large hotel, fallen into disrepair, and was now being restored as a more budget place. The room we got could be generously described as modern institutional in character, but was comfortable enough. To see the falls you really have to look at both sides – the ... read more

The constitutional capital of Bolivia. Sucre. Another night bus from La Paz. Not the worst, though it could have been better. It was full of miners, all of whom had picked the aisle seats, meaning everyone else had to make do with sitting by themselves. The bloke next to me went to sleep almost immediately – he'd done this before. The bloke next to Klaire fiddled with his phone for a bit, then crashed. The older travellers had managed to score seats together – mum just played the Nintendo while dad slept. The kid behind Klaire, however, didn't sleep. He just kicked her chair. A lot. Only a short walk to the hostel, where, strangely, it was cheaper to pay up front than the customary next morning. Checked in, we wandered out to see what we ... read more

Lago Titicaca is only a few hours from La Paz and, although we'd seen it from the Peruvian side last time around, we wanted to see the Bolivian part. It should have been a simple matter of grabbing a bus to Copacabana, and at first it was. We bought our tickets, and settled down to wait. Then, confusion. The manager of the bus station started to abuse the ticket sellers. Apparently the road to Copacabana was closed – protests and unrest – and they shouldn't have been selling tickets. Really? Did we need to reassess? No, we were assured, as long as you don't want to go onto Perú you would have no problems. The thing is, most tourists do want to go onto Perú. So, when we got on the bus, the police boarded and ... read more

Then it was time to head to La Paz. We'd been there before, on our last trip, and loved it. There was was that trepidation – would it live up to our memories? The Potosí bus station was interesting. Recently finished, it looked like a big mosque, with a huge blue dome covering the top, lacking only a minaret. And it was cold – colder than it had any right to be. We got some short relief while we had a feed at the strangely placed restaurant, raised high on a platform in the middle, but it was short lived. We returned to the bottom floor to huddle with our backpacks. Plenty of entertainment though, on the bottom floor. I have never in my life seen so many kids getting so much enjoyment from a fibreglass ... read more

It was as cold as we had been yet in early morning Uyuni. We walked down to the bus station, or at least the area of the street the buses leave from. They had been threatening to build a terminal for a few years now and it remained just that – a threat. A giant deep fried pancake bought on the street for about 20 cents brought peace to our complaining stomachs, and it was tasty too. Pretty simple – take a piece of light bread dough, not quite as runny as a pancake, roll into a ball then out flat, drop it into hot oil...et voila. The bus to Potosí was mostly gringos. It cost a whole 25 Bs for the trip, all five hours of it. We bought the ticket off one of the ... read more
