Hello everyone, well we have almost come to the end of our time in Aotearoa New Zealand. And it wouldn't be complete without one last short blog. In our last blog we were at the tip of the South Island and we were very reluctant to leave. We fell so in love with the South Island that the North Island seemed like a foreign country. It certainly has some cool parts, but not the breathtaking scenery in such abundance as the South. After leaving the Abel Tasman national park, we delayed our departure from the South in the little port town of Picton, where you catch the ferry over to Wellington. We stayed at a gorgeous hostel called the Sequoia lodge, which apart from being very laid back and comfortable, had a real cedar spa and ... read more

Hello again everyone, we hope as ever that you are all well. It is with a tear in our glass eye(s) that we bring you one of our final blogs from New Zealand. It is only a couple of weeks now until we leave Kiwi land, but we are packing in as many hijinks as we can before we leave. We won't bore you with what we got up to during our last few weeks in Dunedin, as you've all heard enough about that side of things. Needless to say we had a couple of leaving dos before we left. I even managed to cry at mine when my colleagues gave an impromptu speech, and that was before a wee wine!! September 1st, we moved all of our worldly possessions out of our house and back ... read more

Vanuatu

Vanuatu is a country we didn't know very much about so were itching to get there and explore. What we did know is that the third world country is melanesian, not polynesian, their official language is French though most people speak pidgin English, and that it has been voted "happiest country on earth". We were welcomed at the airport by a local string band singing songs about Vanuatu. The songs were fantastic, although they gradually all began to sound very similar. Not to worry, this did not detract from the enthusiasm of the eight male singers and musicians who sang of their beloved homeland, keeping time with a consistent left to right stepwise dance. They wore custom dress, ususally a long colourful smock, and floral head dress. Their instruments included a bass string instrument fashioned out ... read more

Kia Ora everyone, we hope again that you are all well. It's been a while since our last blog which was so flippin' long (sorry about that) that we needed a break from blogging. We've settled into quite a normal life down here are don't feel like 'travellers' anymore, and blogging just fell by the wayside. Anyway, we've had some emails from some of you asking if we're still alive down here, so thought it was time for a recap since the last entry. We were very lucky to have an unusually long summer here, which lasted into early June (December in the Northern hemisphere) so we were able to enjoy our weekends outside enjoying the beaches and walking tracks around this area....always something new to discover. Rob was a bit sad when the penguins that ... read more

Hello one and all, we hope you are all in good health, and looking forward to the coming of summer and longer nights. Apologies for not getting this blog out sooner, but summer finally arrived in Dunedin in February and its just been too damn sunny and warm to spend our weekends sitting inside at a computer. So last time we blogged we were just back from a trip to Wanaka in Central Otago, which was one of the places we were thinking about moving for the winter. Well since then, we have decided to stay put here in Dunedin until about August. We decided it would be pretty expensive to move to a town like that, and it's a bit too 'touristy' to call home. We are pretty settled here in Dunedin and decided not ... read more

Hello again, we hope 2007 has got off to a good start for everybody! First of all, a big shout out to some friends who have recently embarked on travels of their own: Dan dodging danger at every turn in Guatemala, and Jeannot and Tony on their 'am-asian' adventure (still funny!). We are enjoying reading your blogs so keep them coming! As for us, we continued to make the most of the Christmas break, and set our sights on Wanaka in Central Otago. It's somewhere we've wanted to visit since we got to NZ, and it's somewhere we were thinking about living and working over the winter. So we thought we'd check it out. We set off late afternoon last Friday, and planned to stay until Sunday. Most of the trip was the same route as ... read more

Hello again everyone, I hope you all enjoyed your New Year's celebration! Kirsty and I have been having a great time, and we have been doing a little traveling with our time off for the holidays. As you can see, we used our Christmas break to head over to Queenstown for a few days, and this past weekend, we took some time to travel to the Catlins, an area near here on the very southeast coast of the south island. We were recommended by the girl who lived in our flat before us to have a look, and as we had the time and the means, we decided to take her up on the idea. To be honest, it was a bit of a last minute decision, but our luck seemed to hold, as we called ... read more

Merry Christmas from Queenstown! Here is the second part of our Christmas update (if you haven't read our previous blog you should do that first) Kirsty and I had a fantastic time in the adventure capital of the world, Queenstown. We decided to get out of Dunedin, and after work on Friday, we drove into central Otago the 3 1/2 hours to Queenstown. The drive was beautiful, as central Otago has some stunning scenery. Although Kirsty slept through a lot of it, I was having a good time taking in the landscape. A lot of the area is very desolate, with rocky hills and mountains, the schist rocks protrude from the ground everywhere giving it a broken look. If you have seen the lord of the rings movies, this is where they filmed the scene at ... read more

Merry Christmas! Sorry we have been so slack about our blogs, but in the past few weeks we haven't been doing too much that merits an entry. Kirsty has been working hard during the week at her speech therapy job, and I have been learning all sorts of things about the specialty foods business. The cafe that I work in sells products from all over the world, and most of it are things that I have no idea about. I am constantly asking the other staff to translate into kiwi for me, and they all find me very amusing. I usually work saturdays, so most of the time we only have sunday to explore the area. That said, we have been up to a few things, and have seen some pretty cool stuff. Since it has ... read more
