At four the next morning we were up and getting ready for the 6-hour bus ride to Uyuni. When we got there we changed from two buses to nine jeeps and set off on ‘The South-western Circuit’. In the next three days, we visited the incredibly flat and wonderfully white Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt lake in the world, and on which exists a hotel made entirely of salt. We saw lagoons of all different colours (due to different mineral and algae contents), and the flocks of flamingos that live in them. We passed the volcanic activity of the geysers, [View Full Entry]

A man digging up the salt...

I’m going to break the Uyuni trip entry into two; one for the Sucre and Potosí part and the other for the South-Western Circuit. The trip was with my exchange program, AFS, so I was one in a group of over 50 students/volunteers from all over the world. Although traveling in such a big group was a bit tedious at times, because everything takes longer, it was fun to have lots of different company. In Sucre the group visited the nearby dinosaur footprints which, if you’ve read my last entry, or maybe it’s the one before, you’ll know I’ve already been [View Full Entry]

Tarija South America » Bolivia » Tarija Department » Tarija
Yesterday morning, after a gruelling 15-hour bus ride in a broken seat I arrived back from a wonderful 4-day stint in Tarija. Tarija is towards the south of Bolivia, and is most well known for being the main wine-growing region in the country. I went with Tia, a Danish girl I met through my work and was going there to meet up with the child she sponsors. So we did that Thursday, and... I'm not going to write a long report here, but I'll add plenty of photos and put descriptions for them all, hope that's OK! [View Full Entry]

Potosí South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Potosi
So… Potosí (on keyboards here they have a very useful button that makes doing accents much easier, you just press it before you press the letter you want accented. Though I guess accents are used more in Spanish than English…). The three-hour bus-trip on the way there was uneventful- We (we being Holger the German, Sandra the Swiss, and myself) arrived in Potosí around 8pm where we were met by Naomi (the Canadian) and Sophie (another Swiss), two of the girls living there. We walked around for a bit, looking for somewhere to stay, deciding on Alojamiento San José which cost [View Full Entry]

For the last three days I have eaten cake! On Thursday as well as being El Día Del Mar (The Day of The Ocean - I was blocked walking home by a parade passing through) it was also the birthday of one of the boys in the class I sometimes help out. We held a bit of a fiesta with cake and jelly and biscuits and all sorts of other horribly unhealthy things. I've included a picture that shows a bit of the classroom. (Also that day I finally got to try out this café I've been wanting to go to, [View Full Entry]

Dancing the night away...
The dancefloor.
Mmmm, chocolate.

So yesterday I went to Tarabuco, which is a nearby (OK, 90 minutes in a micro doesn't seem terribly nearby) town that at least on Sundays, is almost all markets. Very cool. And yesterday was also Carnaval (or actually some other fiesta I think- there were no globos (water balloons) or espuma in any case yay!), so there were a huge number of people there. Bought a few things; earrings, a couple of scarves made from llama wool (for cold Sucre days!), a bag for my camera, and a hand-painted whistle thing, which was a bit of an impulse buy, but [View Full Entry]

So this morning I went with two friends Julia and Cecilia, to eat salteñas and then to La Castilla Glorieta (a castle). It looked beautiful but unfortunately is being restored so we couldn´t go inside. But the gardens were nice! [View Full Entry]

Turret close-up.

I'm going to be lazy and just paste in some bits of an email I sent to my parents: The trip was pretty good. The bus trip there wasn´t great (8 hours!), but when we got there at 5:30 in the morning we waited for the Oruro AFS chaperones and then walked to the house where we stayed. There were three bedrooms and one shower for 25 people, but it was really good to see the people from Potosi, although I must admit to speaking very little Spanish the whole weekend. The food was nice, but I was sick of it [View Full Entry]
