Well I'm now 25 years old, 25 years ago I was in a soggy mess in Lancaster infirmary. This year I was in the beautiful city of Paris. I've done well! What I have done though, is let far too much time elapse between visiting Paris and writing the blog. Today is the 31st of December and I have been to Spain since starting this blog. Unfortunately the intricate details of the trip now elude me. However, I can assure you I had a great trip. Kat organised everything as a Birthday suprise for me. I didn't even know where we were going until two hours before when I insisted on knowing as I didn't know whether to pack shorts or jackets at that point. She told me, we packed, we took the bus and then ... read more

Never has a skyline provoked so much intrigue and fear in the same breath. This was the thought as I disembarked a little mountain train in Southern Germany. Before I elaborate further, we have a couple of days prior to this that require getting you up to speed with. After seven months of employment and the coldest winter on record in Amsterdam, Kat and I decided on a much needed holiday. South of France, Mediterranean, blue waters, white sands and cocktails I hear you say. No….Germany. Kat came up with a family meeting adventure and I was, in some cases, reluctantly in agreement. This decision was made five weeks before leaving. Over these weeks we planned and planned and from somewhere came up with the great idea of climbing Germany’s highest mountain, Zuigspitze, and meeting her ... read more

Spring! Finally after the coldest winter to my knowledge, the birds are tweeting, the sun is shining and the tourists are invading again. My last entry had me walking across frozen canals and thawing my fingers out for work each day, now my only real debate is do my sunglasses match my flip-flops. OK so it isn't the Mediterranean here but after the winter we have just had it may as well be. Partially due to a lack of exercise and partially because I was egged into it, I have now joined a Dutch football team. When I say Dutch I mean Moroccan, English, Brazilian, Argentine, Spanish, Turkish, Scottish, Bolivian, Irish, French and well I think thats it actually. We are a bunch of misfits living in a different country to our own and playing in ... read more

So a long time has elapsed since my last entry. We've had Christmas, New Year and lots of snow. Way back in mid December it snowed and not just a thin covering, the whole city was a wash with white snow. I pulled the curtains back and within seconds had woken the whole flat up. They too were like me, we threw our clothes on, jumped on our bikes and headed straight for the park. On arrival it was evident that not only we, in Amsterdam, had thought to come to this location, in fact it seemed the whole of Amsterdams inhabitants had decided to congregate here at this time. We must have seen 20 Snowmen withing the first 10 minutes of being there. We couldn't really cycle too far for two reasons; One - the ... read more

Well quite a lot has happened since my last entry. I can now say 'I live in Amsterdam' as on September 7th I moved into an apartment with Kimon and Eric. They are two Greek guys I met in the hostel who were in the same position as me (job and flat hunting.) Finding the place was not easy and it took over a month. Either we were just not quick enough in responding to an advert or the flats were too far from the centre or too expensive. Eventually we found one though and with a bit of luck on our side we moved in a few days after signing the contract. The apartment itself is amazing and everyone we speak to, including our Dutch friends, cannot believe what we've got and for the price ... read more

So back on the road again but not to far from sunny England, Amsterdam this time. Not all fun and games though, I'm here to try and find a job and use Amsterdam as a base to see the nearby countries when I can. I arrived late on a wednesday night and had to try and find my hostel. After a short train journey and a quick tram I was wandering around a busy Amsterdam city centre. As I said it was only a Wednesday night but still all the bars, pubs and resturants we packed. No Economic crisis here by the looks of things. I have now been here for two months, I cannot beleive how fast it has gone. I have a job in a Market Research company, calling up Volvo truck owners and ... read more

So with Carnival over and about two weeks till I flew home, what better thing to do than head back to Argentina and Buenos Aires to see a certain lady friend I had met and become quite close to in Brazil. I could have flown and in hindsight should have flown but I decided on taking the bus. There is one company that runs direct buses between the two cities but unfortunately I had missed the bus for that day so decided to take separate buses all the way there. Let me give you a run down of my journey; Cabo Frio to Rio, 3hrs Rio bus station, 3hrs Rio to Sao Paulo, 8hrs Sao Paulo bus station, 10hrs (night time sleeping like a homeless person in the station) Sao Paulo to Iguacu, 15hrs Iguacu (Brazil) ... read more

As you read in the last entry, we were a little unsure of where we were actually heading. All we had was a road name and that was it, also it was late in the night by now. Luckily we found a taxi driver at the bus station who at least knew where the road was so we got dropped off there and just sort of wandered around for a little bit. There was a small complex of nice new apartments so we took a stab in the dark and headed in there. We asked a woman there if she knew our friends or at least knew if they lived there or not. Like the title states Cabo Frio is really not a tourist place and although she didn't know our friends she figured we weren't ... read more

Well Rio was a bit of a flying visit just two days and nights. Upon arrival from Isle Grande there was a great atmosphere and vibe around the place. Everybody in Brazil lives for Carnival, it's bigger than Christmas here, so it was all Carnival talk non stop. Buses, in the street, taxi's everywhere all you heard was Carnival, Carnival, Carnival. Strange then you might think...Why did we only stay two days and then leave the day before Carnival starts. Well because we had an apartment lined up for another city three hours away that supposedly is more the 'real carnival' Rio apparently has become the Carnival for tourists, no doubt still absolutely breath taking and memories for life but not what Brazilians call the real Carnival. Also another deciding factor was cost, even in a ... read more

In my last blog I made the brave statement that Brazil could well rival Colombia as my favorite country in South America. At this point I have not even been to the Carnival yet and I am sure this statement is true. I am having such a good time. After reluctantly leaving Florianopolis (now traveling with an Irish guy, Conor and an English guy, Harrison) We made our way to a little old colonial town on the coast called Paraty. Basically really old cobble streets, old buildings and a big holiday destination for everybody. We found a lovely little hostel just out of the centre but right on the beach. There are two sides to this town; the beautiful picture perfect old town during the day and then by night the streets just come alive with ... read more
