| 15th November 2009 karina | thanks for doing this! - From: The American (Vietnam) War for Dummies. just want to say this is the best explanation of the vietnam war i've ever read .. it's clear and complete .. u just made it easier to understand ;) good! |
| 25th August 2009 Jack Kato | Great... but just one thought. - From: The American (Vietnam) War for Dummies. As a diabled combat Vietnam I was impressed with the information you have gathered and was so kind to present online, Thank you. I was with the 101st Airborne Div that operated often around the A Shau Vally, Laos and near the DMZ. I quote you.. "...we never lost a battle in Vietnam"... That is a nice thought but I'm sorry, its wrong. There were a number of battles lost.... I will name but one... Please research "Firebase Ripcord". Again I do thank you for your great insight, pictures and all the information you have provided. You are a real patriot. Peace to you and yours... Jack |
| 14th July 2009 mike hostler | Great - From: Monday morning reflections Great blogs Kevin. Glad you had a good trip. Hopefully you'll be able to now deal with things with a clear head. Good luck with it all. Give us a ring if you want to come up and swim, want us to come down for a bbq, or just hit Elitch. |
| 14th July 2009 shawn | shout outs - From: Monday morning reflections lil hurt that I did not get a shout out, but then came your meaning and the use in the world, for paintings, and it felt like me:) tthanks for sharing Kevin... |
| 13th July 2009 KevinMartini | Strange America - From: Monday morning reflections Oh yeah, the house for sale on Michael Jackson's block in Gary, IN for $500 down and $250 a month. |
| 13th July 2009 KevinMartini | Strange America - From: Monday morning reflections Probably the whole Milshire Hotel experience...the people, the smell...just the whole experience of being in a true crackden/brothel/roach motel. I have been in some bad places before, but that was probably the worst. Also, a bra repair company that had at least 10 giant billboards across Kentucky...how does a bra repair company have the money for that many billboards? Oh, and the pregnant woman chain smoking cigs was pretty interesting/sickening. |
| 13th July 2009 Kevin Mazzola | Strange America? - From: Monday morning reflections What's the most shocking thing you saw/experienced? |
| 13th July 2009 DrewLabbo | Thx for the shout out! - From: Monday morning reflections Nice reflections on our country... and glad you could get away from it all for a few days. Thanks for the shout out on your past two posts! |

| 1st June 2006 Kate Hildebrand | one cell phone ring?!? - From: Cut Off From The World…in Myanmar I'm still haunted by that MIDI version of the Lambada I heard ringing about every 5 minutes in Burma. I sort of get what you're saying, but what killed me about Burma is that they're wearing longyis... with Kurt Cobain tee shirts. Burma's at a crossroads and things are going to start changing real fast. |
| 30th May 2006 Kevin | Response to Warren - From: Cut Off From The World…in Myanmar Wow, it sounds like we visited a completely different place...and I think you took some of what I said wrong. In fact, I wrote a whole paragraph saying that I urge everybody to visit Myanmar. As for seeing cell phones, ipods, and all that...I guess I didn't see them, because I didn't see any toursits...and this is not a negative thing, I actually preferred it to be surrounded by Westerners everywhere else in SE Asia. And I don't think I said anything about the locals not being open to Westener's...I said the government was very careful with Americans visiting. As for being taken by Pho...I assure you this wasn't the case...I have actually spoken to quite a few Burmese in exile who have read this blog who have validated everything I have said. And as for internet...the government cut it off while I was there...the message was "The internet is down, only Myanmar sites available"...and the internet people in 4 different towns verified that they set the proxy to block major e-mail services. Anyway, it sounds like we both very much enjoyed the country...just had a different experience. Thanks for you comments. |
| 30th May 2006 Warren | Cut off from the world !!! What world? - From: Cut Off From The World…in Myanmar Kevin, About your article ! It was confusing to read whether you were PRO or AGAINST visiting the country which made it sound a little political. To make it political . I returned from Myanmar in late April. Great Place. Yes, I call it Myanmar because. Burma {In Burmese (Bamah Pyay) means only a part of the country and Myanmar, is the name for the whole country}. Calling it Burma is an insult to the rest of ethnic people other than the Bamah's. (Its like calling Scotland..England). The Bamah's (pronounced Bama) are the predominant race of the land. The conquring colonial power of the time (Britain) named the country Burma, this may have resulted in an element of divisive tension in that country . Away from politics! During my stay, I saw a lot of tourists through out the country who encountered mainly positive comments by the local people towards the west. We used the internet regularly. There were cell phones, I-pods, pirated products of all kinds and even Big Macs & Cokes were available under different names, not to mention cheap Myanmar beer. Oh, by the way! I think you were had by that guide for $5 a day. |
| 29th May 2006 Clarice | - From: Cut Off From The World…in Myanmar You had made a right decision to visit Myanmar. Thanks for the details. Indeed a worth read and i will forward it to my friends. | 17th May 2006 GK | - From: Yes, Another Blog...Burma, Should I Go? I'm glad you have decided to go to visit Myanmar. I was there for 3 weeks last November & had the most amazing time. I have travelled all over SE Asia & Myanmar is one of my favourite countires. The people are so friendly & calm. The sites are totally amazing, especially Bagan. In my view just as amazing as Angkor Watt. Have a great time & I look forward to reading your blog when you get back. |

(i'll write about culture in penang soon).. get some nice kaftan as sourvenir... and also - try LAKSA PENANG - a local rice noodle in a fish kuah.. www.durianfolk.blogspot.com |
| 1st May 2006 Jax | In the immortal words of Dave: - From: Australian Anecdotes "Its not where but who you're with that really matters." |
| 1st May 2006 Kate Hildebrand | Anti-Americanism - From: Anti American Idiots I'm an American in Asia right now and I feel your pain. I've sustained several assinine lectures and I think its rampant- I met a 25 year old American woman who was informed by a French tourist that the booming prostitution industry in Bangkok was "her fault". I usually just laugh and shake my head in disbelief but I think you handled the situation very well. |
| 24th April 2006 matt hire | - From: Anti American Idiots Kevin Glad to hear your trip is going well, have been enjoying your reading. Hey are you checking g-mail? |
| 24th April 2006 Steve Nekava | Take a breather - From: Anti American Idiots Kev, You sound quite different than while I was reading about your travels in Vietnam. Sounds like you're not having the best time in Australia. Its a dream to be there but you are just not feeling the dream part. I hope things get better for you although I honestly don't feel too badly... Oh poor Kevin not having a fun time while traveling the world... I know it sounds crazy... But I know that part of you wishes to be feeling like you did in vietnam while you are in Australia. All in all I know you'll make the absolute best of it. Oh I also wanted to add that the same feeling you had while getting the hot dog... I get very often when I tell people that I am Jewish. No matter how you slice it and no matter where you are there will be people who reach instant judgement based on some form of prejudice. Its just part of the worl we are in. Shit, I'm sure we do it to a degree ourselves without noticeing sometimes too. Hopefully we don't offend someone too badly in the process. Hey man.. I want to send you an invite to my wedding.. where do I send it? Also Seth Faber had a baby girl on April 7th. Shout at you Later. -Steven Nekava |
| 23rd April 2006 Mimi McSharry | Hey! - From: Anti American Idiots I just wanted to say hello! It's been a very loooooooooooong time. I hope you are doing well Kevin. Sorry that you had to deal with those idiots. Unfortunately, I think there are assholes in every part of the world. Amazing; to think we are the only country (US) that has to deal with that kind of crap! Anyway, they are just ignorant; you have to almost feel sorry for those kinds of narrow minded people. They have obviously not been educated past the 5th grade, LOL. Take care and happy travels my friend! |
| 23rd April 2006 jim crouson | german skinhead beatings - From: Anti American Idiots I wish I was there. I would have driven his teeth down his throat. I hate anti-Americans as well... but I'm sure my hatred is a little different. People who hate the country that has offered them so many opportunities. We have no self sacrifice left in this country. | 23rd April 2006 amanda | i understand - From: Anti American Idiots all i can tell you is.... i understand. working at buccaneers i actually get very little harassment for being american, but when i do honestly...it's the germans. anyways, i'm on your side man, we can only do our bit. however, it still feels shitty to get blamed for problems and policies that are born out of the rule of an individual we don't even support. shame. sending you many positive american thoughts...hope this finds you well. pit stop in south africa? i'm here until end of july :) |

| 26th February 2006 Tiffany | Thank You! - From: Pretending to Be a Backpacker Thanks for the birthday shout out, Kev - that was totally sweet of you. :-) |
| 26th February 2006 janees | 'Pretending' - From: Pretending to Be a Backpacker Maybe that comment says more about the person who said it than about you. What is a 'backpacker'? It is different things to different people. Some people think that you can only be a 'backpacker' if you stay in the cheapest places and eat the cheapest food and spend the least amount of money so that they can say that they have 'roughed it' or some such c**p etc. But maybe a backpacker is simply someone who carries a backpack! And there is nothing wrong with staying in more expensive places etc and putting more money into the economy of the country you are travelling around. Maybe your label for what you are is a traveller - not a tourist - but a traveller. Anyway - they are all just labels - and there are too many of those in life. Just enjoy it and be there doing what you are doing for your own reasons and for your own self. Dont be influenced by other's lables. Continue to be your own person. |

| 17th February 2006 Danny Daddy Dolan | - From: Enjoy the Silence (if you can hear it over the Roosters) Kevin, This is awsome I'm soo glad you have hooked up with others over there. Reading this makes me (and maybe mommy) want to sell everything and get the hell out of this rat race. Enjoy your time, it seems as though you are having such a good time and so many experiences that you may never want to come back and get caught up in what we called the Corporate World. Be Safe Kevin....Lov ya Daddy # 2 |

| 4th February 2006 julie | - From: Our Moment Has Passed…Khawp Khun Khrap Thailand This blog made me sad. I don't know why. I truely hope you find peace in your heart someday. Please be safe. | 4th February 2006 mr. Tao | Common scene in Thai man. - From: Our Moment Has Passed…Khawp Khun Khrap Thailand Youre in Thailand, not a 3rd world country in the far far away africa or so. I am suprised that you didnt realize that Thai is developing fast and have done so the last 15 years or so... actually more.- but you can run to a re,ote beach that is not sandy, between Surat Thani and Hua Hin somewhere, and find your quiet spot. Or off rad Uttaradit, inthe forest. :D |
| 3rd February 2006 Steven Nekava | Quiet... - From: Our Moment Has Passed…Khawp Khun Khrap Thailand I guess getting hit with the whole starbucks / laptop / vente mocha frapaccino scene is enough to drive anyone to think the entire world has been plugged into a matrix of mainstream madness. I thought you would have hit that point while whatching that long neck women texting someone on her mobile phone. That seemed pretty crazy to me. I am glad I couldn't sleep tonight and had a moment to read through your blogs. Enjoy your travels no matter where it takes you. |
| 3rd February 2006 Steven Nekava | Reading through the travel Blog - From: Discos and Missonaries...Ridin' The Nighttrain! Kevin, I can't sleep tonight for one reason or another but as I read through your travel blog I am both envious and inspired. I couldn't agree with you more about the whole work thing. It should never have that grip on anyone and it some how grips us all. I also fully know what you mean about finding the greatest moments when you least expect them. I hope you keep finding them. I'll continue to read on but wanted to let you know I am damn proud to know you. maybe this epiphany could lead you to become a travel agent in the future organizing the best stress relief travels for all of the over-stressed corporate executives of the world.... Who knows... just a whacky idea. |

Keep on travelling - when I travelled it was the happiest time of my life. Maybe 'real life' is not for me! Even tho' times may not always be great or go the way you want them to go - you learn so much about the world around you, the people around you and about yourself. You had the courage to go out there again, and to share so much with other people by writing your blog. You sound like a decent person and you are doing what so many people dont have the courage to do. GO FOR IT! What ever you want IT to be - it will come to you. |

| 16th September 2005 El Peruano | oh lord another american in Lima! - From: A Day in Lima why do you think every thing in the world has to do with your US standards? ... Coca Cola, Indiana Jones... The church you are standing by is called Convent of San Francisco. In colonial times, people believed that the closer they buried their death people, the more protected their souls would be. So, the first public cemeteries were located under the churches, in this case Lima had it at the location you visited. None of the Indiana Jones fiction is there! Also, the Peruvian hairless dog is very common in the northern part of the country and it was considered sacred by the indigenous peoples. When the Romans were building Coliseums, the Wari had their own architecture, which has mostly dissapeared because Peru is located in a highly earthquake zone. |
