Summer for a week

The weather became very nice and gave the city a completely different vibe. Now that it feels like January again not fair I decided to post these photos in memory of the good weather.

Observations on The Welfare State

Ah Great Britain. Free health care affordable housing cheap groceries and easy transport sounds great Don't make love in the street just yet...I feel like discussing this because I have been required to understand housing policy in Britain among other things as part of my programme. When I arrived in this country I was a leftleaning moderate. Now I am calling that into question. I wouldn'

My Neighbourhood

I have photos of the surrounding area on here already but I thought I'd show what it looks like in the immediate vicinity of my flat 1block radius. If you've ever been to London and seen a typical residential neighbourhood you'll understand why I'm happy to live here. Much of London is absolutely filthy and pretty ugly when it comes to housing. I am grateful to LSE's endowment for buying a p

Tarifa and Bolonia ruins

Tarifa is the southernmost point of the continent the straight of Gibraltar is slightly north. Here where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic the winds are fierce and constant. This cannot be overstated the sand on the beach will blow into your face and stay there from the impact. The water is not too cold however and the winds attract a younger adventurous element to this premier windsur

Gibraltar

By 6am we were hurtling down the coast in a rented BMW at 160km per hour hoping to make it to the edge of Europe in time to see the sunrise. We made it. I was impressed by the city though we didn't have time to explore the rock itself. You have to cross the runway of the city's airport to get in. It felt very strange walking across such taboo pedestrian space but all cars and people have to cros

Ronda

Drove up into the mountains for the day. This town supposedly represents a more traditional Andalucian way of life. We tried to eat at a Tapas bar that is rated among the best in the country for such but eveything in the village closed at 4 so we were forced to eat at McDonalds. A shame...

London Borough of Richmond

About 14km out of Central London one finds the open spaces and posh Victorian homes of Richmond. This area was the site of Henry VII's palace in 1500. Much of the open space from that time still exists as a natural preserve.

I've finally started to use the London Underground. If you look back at the past year and half of my travels you can imagine how hard it is to give up the automobile. Its for the best I suppose.

Took a field trip today with my Programme Director at LSE. He showed us around the Brick lane area in an effort to give us ideas for our dissertations and gave us some back story on the urban situation there. Also some random shots from around my neighborhood or en route to it London Bridge and Tower area

London II

It's now been over a month in London. I suppose it's not even cold yet but the weather is my biggest concern when pondering a career in the city. I've started the first step in the recruitment process for several companies. Its a competitive city and graduates usually apply for jobs the same way we would for a university in the states essay questions etc. all 9 months in advance. Here are pic

After the week in the Pacific I spent another day in California before flying back to Memphis. I moved to Jackson TN to work for a couple days then headed to Nashville for New Year's Eve. Went back to club Play downtown. Haven't had that much fun on New Year's in many years. I made some friends then headed to Alabama. I spent a week in Huntsville. Had some very good times in Huntsville and wi

Kauai HI

The warm air and beaches were especially rewarding. After walking the frigid steel canyons of downtown Indianapolis and leaning into the wind in Ohio I couldn't have wanted more for Christmas. I joined my family for this side trip and we stayed mostly on the south end of the island of Kauai.
