Kendlelight

Hello there, I am a wannabe Globetrotter, so far the travells have lead me all around europe and to the US, and to Cambodia for my thesis research. I was a student in Population Studies at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. And my interests are in Reproductive Health!!! In this travelblog you can find all the details of my stay in Cambodia.

However even though I am graduated it does not mean that I have stopped travelling.

Follow my adventures as I dive into the unknown. Next stop Tailand and Laos.

Well maybe, or maybe not. But this could be the last entry before I come home. There is so much to tell. But I'll start with wishing you all a very merry belated Christmas. I hope yours was as fun and exciting as mine. I spend my christmas in Vang Vieng most of the time. Luang Prabang But before I went to Vang Vieng I took the time to have a look around Luang Prabang. I booked myself a trip to the Pak Ou caves. I didn't know there could be that many buddha's in one cave. But more than that I enjoyed the trip on the Mekong. It was surprising to discover that everyone payed different prices for the same trip though. What else did I do. Oh right, I went to the royal palace. ... read more

I think it is about time I wrote a new entry. The last week I have been preoccupied with going to and being in Laos. After the trekking in Chiang Mai I had to push myself a little in going again. Everytime you meet new nice people and then you are going away again. I can't say it is always easy. Today it is monday december 21st and I am Luang Prabang. I have just said my goodbyes to my brother Simon and my niece Yasmine. So I am feeling a little sad, after all you never know when you will see them next. However, I better start with a report on what I have been doing this last week. The trip to Oudomxay Those who had heard a little bit of the trip I wanted ... read more

Hello Everyone, Here I am again. This time I am writing to you from Chang Mai. And I am very exhausted right now. I did something crazy. I went on a 3 day trek trough the jungle. However before I go and tell you about that, i will first tell you about what happened before that. I took an overnight bus from Ayuthaya to Chang Mai, and that was horrible, it was way too long. So without any sleep I arrived in Chang Mai, the first thing they did was wake is us and shove us in pickup truck. I got into the one from the center. We were basically driven to a guesthouse and they tried to sign everyone up for trekking. But I was too tired to think of that now. So I refused ... read more

Well now, how does one get from Bangkok to Ayuthaya. I thought by minivan, but that might not be the best option after all. The journey to Ayuthaya is a story in itself. So here we go. I was told I would be picked up at the guesthouse and then taken by minivan to Ayuthaya. So at 12.15 someone ran into the guesthouse calling Ayuthaya, Ayuthaya, come come!! So I hurried after him with my backpack. Together with some tourists we were pushed into a minivan and off we went. Although at the time I did not really know what that meant, being pushed into a minivan and hurried off. When we came to the victory monument I alone was hurried out of the minivan and put in a new one. They said it would leave ... read more

December 7th 2009

Well here I am, it is way too hot for me to be running around Bangkok this afternoon. So I thought I spoil you all with a little Blog entry. Even though I planned everything about my arrival as detailed as possible, things decided to go differently. First of all I spend 12 hours in a plane with people next to be who did not want to talk, so i had to hold my tongue. And you all know that is difficult for me. So with no sleep I arrived in Bangkok. I met two nice girls who I shared a cab with into Bangkok (how could I forget they drive on the left side?). But when I finally arrived I could not check in until 1 pm. Of course I was way too tired to ... read more

May 31st 2008

May 24th 2008. After an early start of the day I got myself in to the train, only to be welcomed by an army of women going to the 'libelle beurs’. Too noisy to continue sleeping! The flight to Birmingham was uneventful, luckily, as I do not like flying all that much. Caz and Roj were waiting for me at the airport. There is nothing like seeing old friends again after such a long time. Saturday was a beautiful day, so after changing and having a quick lunch we headed off to Stratford-upon-Avon (Shakespeare’s Town). I was amazed about how much Shakespeare one can find in a town. All in all we had a lovely afternoon, and then headed back to watch the European Song Contest (I can’t believe that Russia won). Unfortunately after a beautiful ... read more

Even though I had said that I had written my last blog, I really did want to make an exception. I realized that the experience of travelling does not stop the minute you are back at the airport greeted by your family, but it is followed by an emotional rollercoaster. Just as I had to find my way in Cambodia, I needed to find my way around back home. Not everything is the same once you return, friends have departed, others have moved, there are happy as well as sad feelings. I have not yet figured out how to let go of such an extraordinary time, so all I wanted was to get back to asia on the first flight out of here. However the best thing of course was seeing my family and friends, and ... read more

Hello All, I am now in Kuala Lumpur and I thought this would be an excellent time to write my last update, just before I arrive home. So what happened in the last week or so. Well not that much, or not that many exciting things for sure. So where to start, ah Kampong Cham, the last few days there, at my Cambodian home, were all about trying to recover of some health problems, which still hasn't worked btw. After a few days of hanging around, we headed of to Phnom Penh on the Wednesday, it was weird the last days in Kampong Cham, knowing I wouldn't be going back to my Cambodian home for quite some time. So there I was in Phnom Penh, with more than a week to kill, i can't say that ... read more

Hello everyone, I am not sure if this is going to be my last update from Cambodia or not. In 10 days I am going home, and it saddens me to have to leave this beautiful country behind. But of course you are not interested in my heartache stories, you want to know what I have been upto. Last time I did not tell you what my plans were, even though they were in the making, but I just only wanted to tell you about my new adventure after it happened. Even though I was a little hesitant to go, Simon let me know choice, I had to get on a taxi and head to the east to Mondulkiri, the wild wild west of Cambodia. So there I went on tuesday morning, in the taxi to ... read more

Dear friends and family It has been a week since my last update and a lot has happened again. After returning from Sihanouk with Simon, I gave myself two days of rest, catching my breath after a week of partying so to speak. During these two days I wrote a little report with preliminary results, and I already realized I made one mistake, but at least it can still be changed. I can hardly belief that I so easily wrote 10 pages full. Luckily Simon took really good care of me those days while I was working, and as Oie is in Bangkok, we went out for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Yes it did feel a little bit decadent. I realize that it has been over two months, since I cooked, cleaned or washed anything myself. ... read more
