It's a long, tiring series of flights to get to Wrightsville, but Keith has a meeting back in the states, so we are able to spend time with friends and family. Hank's new job as captain allowed them a quick trip from Charleston. Keith was very pleased with his son's ability to handle the boat, and relished the time spent on the water, with Hank. It was good to be able to see folks and catch up with gossip and news about our hometown. Repeatedly we heard "what an opportunity, to travel, see new places, experience Europe, ect" With that said it's not just our opportunity, but your opportunity. Get a passport, fly to Poland! Right now the city of Krakow is beautiful, as Christmas is right around the corner. A new snow fell last night, ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris November 19th 2007

Realizing that there would be a long weekend, we book a flight for a Paris get away. November 1 and 2, are holidays! Poland has a holiday for All Saint's Day and All Soul's Day so it's a four day week end. Now Keith likes to plan well in advance, and with five days to go, he does not consider this advance planning. Just barely two weeks ago he was in Morocco, but he is convinced to hit the road again. This entry is long, there is a second page of pictures. (I put "voila" in the title, because when ever we were given something, a ticket, a dish, or receipt, they said "voila"! I think it means "here it is".) Yes, Paris was so nice. It's all more wonderful, and bigger than we thought it ... read more

Africa » Morocco » Grand Casablanca » Casablanca November 11th 2007

October 17. Keith steps out of his box, all the way to Africa. For this trip he has not bought the tourist guide book for Morocco, nor has he done his usual planning. There is a meeting at the plant in Casablanca, he goes with his colleagues, puts all his trust in them! I'm not invited to this location, it is a business trip after all. He tells me that Casablanca was more populated than he had thought. Close to 6 million people. The traffic was organized chaos. Taxi fares need to be negotiated before entering the cab. He says he saw the Atlantic Ocean from the opposite side than he is used to. And anywhere there are waves there are surfers, even if the beach property isn't viewed the same as it is on the ... read more

Grown men squeezed into these go carts, some whizzed by and some puttered by. This was a team building event to cap off the regional meeting. The men got to show off their driving skills, or be run over by those showing off their driving skills! Keith thought he was speeding around the track until he saw the video!! ( This video is filmed correctly, leave your laptops on the desk!) After the go carts,we all were treated to a delicious meal in a little restuarant, our hosts were very gracious. This town is much like anything we might have back in the states where a paper plant would be located. It is good to see how much alike our country sides are. While the guys were in the office that day I stayed behind at ... read more

Monumental Cemetery isn't quite the tourist attraction that "The Last Supper" is so it was no problem getting to it. And I hope to be back and see more of the grounds. One morning was not enough time. It really is an open air sculpture museum. It is so moving, that at times I felt like I was intruding on people's intimate moments of sorrow. What the families who commissioned the art must have conveyed to the artist! These sculptures are beautiful. (I finally figured out how to fix all of my vertical video, so this little clip is now easy to watch) This was our last day in Milan. The next morning we left for Bellusco and Keith's business portion of the trip. The last photo is Keith's reaction to a risqué store window! ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Milan November 1st 2007

On the 7th day, 6 October, we went to Italy. Keith had a meeting in Bellusco, which is outside of Milan, so off we go! Keep in mind that at this point I'm still in culture shock and jet lagged. Not sure what day it is, or what country I'm in! Like I said before, being tourist, what I'm about to write is so cliché... Keith has been buying up tour books and has our itinerary planned. (One quick explanation about the video. I didn't yet know how to work the camera, so view this entry on a laptop so you can turn it on it's side. That way the picture will be straight up!! Or lean your head to the side and enjoy my camera angle) The main square is close to our hotel, but ... read more

Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Kraków October 31st 2007

Sammy and Hank saw us to the airport, and we are on our way to Krakow after three hectic months of preparations. oh the vaccinations! The next chapter in our lives, this one in Europe, begins in the Rynek Glowny, on a beautiful fall evening, September 29. After a quick glance at our new home, we walked up to the Market Square, known as the Rynek Glowny. This huge town square, ringed with restaurants and shops, is the social center of Old Town. In the center is the Cloth Market and the Town Hall Tower. Not only is it picturesque, as you wander through the streets you'll hear music. A single accordion player, a folk duet, a strolling trio. Just a beautiful place, literally a world apart from our norm! The apartment is on the bank ... read more

Before flying over to Krakow, we spend a couple of weeks at home in North Carolina, visiting friends and family, and encouraging them to make plans for Poland! Keith goes on the annual fishing trip to Core Banks. This is a man thing. The men of the family stay in shacks and drive their trucks up and down the beach looking for fish. This goes on for 3 days until they pack up and ferry back over. This is a very well planned and executed excursion, very empowering. I and the other females of the family don't know all the particulars, but upon their return they are unshaven, tired and keep repeating the phrase "Hey Hank, what goes on at the island, stays there." While they were away we girls did get together and play a ... read more

Gotta start somewhere It's not that we didn't want to move to Krakow, it just happened fast! Serendipity is the effect by which one accidentally discovers something fortunate, especially while looking for something else entirely. And that is exactly what happened with us. Got the house sold, made arrangements with the moving company, we are moving back "home" to North Carolina, after being in Memphis, fulfilling Keith's long range plan for retirement! And then comes the offer to work in Krakow, Poland! Serendipity. There we were, looking at moving back to our home town, back to our little house by the ocean, back to our old life. But what we have found is a life in a foreign country, in a wonderful apartment next to the castle, overlooking the river. We accidentally found something fortunate, while ... read more
