Reflecting I hope to carry these workplaces differences I noted to my own life. In particular, I want to be more thorough like the Brits and take my time with tasks. Upon arriving back in the United States, it has become clear why there are workplace differences between American and British culture. The Brits tend to focus more on relationships versus business. Now I am used to working like a Brit and taking my time. Because of this, my re-entry has been slightly difficult given the fast-paced American way of life. One of my goals is to find the best of both worlds in order to form those workplace relationships, but also continue to work in a quick manner. As a result, I hope to embody the reverse of British invasion!
Reflecting Although it was never a goal of mine to improve my communication skills, I'm glad I did. I feel empowered to build upon these skills that I have perfected. I went from meekly sitting in the corner in my office to explaining my predicament with my illness to now using communication as a means to learn more. For example, now that I am in the core of my business classes, I feel ready to branch out and network with prospective employers, peers, and professors more. With a full school year ahead of me, I hope these new changes will carry over in my professional career as I search for jobs. In addition, I want to pair this skill with my newfound adult independence. I now feel comfortable working and living on my own, so adding the ability to communicate will only put me a step further to pursing my long-term goals.
Cultural learning According to one of my pre-departure reflections, I intended to step out of my American comfort zone and embrace the customs of London. Looking back, I realize I did this in a number of ways, but this post about media and the newspapers stood out to me. For me, it was customary to sit in front of the television and listen to the news, but I embraced the art of reading a newspaper. I learned how popular reading the newspaper was while there and fully lived up to my goal of embracing the culture. In addition, I wanted to make connections all over the world. This post reminded me of how I used the newspapers to accomplish that goal. I anticipated that I would meet this goal by meeting people at work, but the media surprisingly helped me. Now I frequently pick up the newspaper to gain a little knowledge and I do appreciate the news more, a goal of mine according to this post.
