MUNICH Day 37 Usually I avoid guided tours at all cost. I have not taken part in any throughout my whole trip thus far. But having arrived in Munich I decided to take part in the free (not so free, tip based) tour of Munich. Usually I feel that my own wanderings around a city are enough but because there is a lot of history that impacted on the whole world from within Munich I decided that I should do the tour so I could get some of the details that I wouldn’t have been able to get on my own. It was definitely a good choice. The tour began at Marian Platz where the Glockenspiel tower clock is located. It is a funny clock that starts a mechanical show at 11 and 12 each ... read more

MUNICH Day 36 I arrived in Zurich but decided to head straight for Munich as it seemed the same as the other cities in Switzerland that I had already seen. Overall, Switzerland is lovely but so expensive. Not only is it for shopping but just to stay in the hostels I was paying 10-15euro more per night and the hostels weren’t even as good as once that I had stayed at for half the price. So off to Munich. The first thing I did in Munich was some much needed laundry and an early nights rest. ... read more

LUZERN Day 35 On my way to the train station I met the owner of the hostel that I stayed in the previous night. I was walking down the road staring up at the mountains and sky when I heard a man say ‘you look very relaxed for a small girl carrying such a large bag’ and I said ‘well it must be the fresh air’. He laughed and introduced himself, which is how I found out he owned the hostel. We chatted as we walked to the train station and he told me how he lived in Toronto for a few years when he was my age at Young and Adelaide. He reminisced about the leafs and maple leaf gardens. As we parted at the train station he gave me three pens: 1 for ... read more

INTERLAKEN Day 34 The next day I headed for Interlaken, which is winter sport central. It is also the location of Jungfraujoch Mountain, 4158meters. And near the top of this mountain is Europe’s highest train station. Since I hadn’t skied in years I decided that it wouldn’t be the best time to try it out again after my fall out of the shower I figured the risk of falling off a giant mountain would be too great. But I did decide that taking the scenic train to the Top of Europe was well worth the extra money that I had to pay. While waiting for my bus to take me to the train station a gorgeous hawk/eagle kept flying overhead. I saw it, or another one, three times today. I got to the train station ... read more

GENEVE/BERN Day 33 I arrived in Geneve and was a little disappointed. Yes, the alps are beautiful but there is not much else to this town. It would be great if I had a crap load of money to spend on expensive clothes and watches but I don’t so I only stayed 2 hours on got on the next train to Bern. I did find it really funny the amount of clocks and watches that are EVERYWHERE. I get that Geneve and Switzerland is the mecca for watches but really so many. I made it to Bern and immediately knew it was a better choice to visit. It is a small town but all the buildings are very swiss and the old town is really neat to walk through. You still have a lot of ... read more

BARCELONA Day 32 Today I took my time a little more. I headed for the beach to relax. As I neared the beach I heard a lot of music. Since the previous times on my travels that I heard music it worked out really well to follow it I decided to do the same thing. It just so happened that the weekend I was there coincided with carnival! So the music I heard was the bands getting ready to begin the parade. There were some seriously crazy costumes both in the parade and on the street. In Spain, since they don’t have Halloween the carnival is the time that children get to dress up in costume. So there were some batman, cowboy, and princesses running around the streets. There parade was really fun to see ... read more

BARCELONA Day 31 Having recuperated from my fall, although still highly bruised, I decided to begin my day with a self-guided Gaudi tour. Gaudi is Barcelona’s most famous architect having designed numerous buildings throughout Barcelona. His work is beyond creative and is almost unimaginable. The first stop was next door to my hostel being the Batilo. This is a Willy Wonka meets Dr.Seuss type design. There are curves, spirals, shapes, colour, a total feast for the eyes. This building in particular represents the battle of some saint against a dragon. Keep in mind that Gaudi was highly religious so a lot of his work reflects this. When you see the building you can see how it could be inspired by a dragon. Unfortunately, almost all of the gaudi buildings are outrageously prices (about 20Euros per ... read more

BARCELONA Day 30 I arrived in Barcelona and immediately amazed by the architecture. Now, I am not some crazy architect student but I love all things whimsical and out of the norm. And Barcelona is just that! Although I was really tired and needed to get to my hostel I was uber excited to get out and see what Barcelona had in store for me. After getting into my hostel I headed straight for the showers. Unfortunately, I was having an off day and fell while getting out of the shower. Now, it isn’t like I just fell because I am a klutz. The reality is that it is a horribly designed shower facility where you must step up to a 1 foot high tiled platform where the shower heads spray water all over the ... read more

VALENCIA Day 29 After taking a night train from Granada I woke up at 6am in Valencia. I made my way to the hostel and slept for a couple hours before heading out to see Valencia. My first stop is the Mercado Central, which is packed with food and people. There were so many delicious looking things to eat. I stopped at the bakery and got heavenly looking pizza-ish bread. It had raisins and walnuts and some sugar sprinkled all over it! And let me tell you it tasted as good as it looked. I would love to have a market of that size next to my house but I can’t stand all of the people. As I was heading into the market I had noticed there was a large building that had beautiful curved ... read more

GRANADA Day 27 Today I went for a longer walk around the Albayzin, which is the old Moorish neighbourhood. It was a lot of steep climbing but well worth it for the views at the top. The first look out is the Mirador de San Nicolas. At this spot you can get a full view of the Alhambra, Granada, and the snow capped mountains Sierra Nevada in the distance. I also went to another lookout for a different perspective. I really love the tile and pottery that people use to decorate the exterior of their homes. Also, there are beautiful homes with paintings of curtains and shudders on the outside of the walls around the windows. I continued to walk randomly around Granada and came across a park that is dedicated to exercise. It is ... read more
