I travelled a lot when I was in my twenties and early thirties, but then family and life took precedence and travel took a back seat. Now I've been bitten again by the travel bug, and am saving for my third long trip in 5 years.

This will be short as I am positively starving at the moment and have to rush back to Langata, pack, and come back into town to stay overnight at my favourite Hotel Greton. Jackie found out this afternoon she has from tomorrow til Sunday off, so we are rushed. I got passport pictures for a Tanzanian visa, bus tickets, the hotel room, and tried to get the visa but that part of the office was closed. So now I have to get the visa at the border. Oh well. The bus leaves at 5:30 in the morning, and is supposed to get into Dar El Salaam at 7:30 in the evening. Long day! We'll overnight in Dar and then to Zanzibar the next day. I surprised Jackie though and suggested we check out flights back - ... read more

September 19 Hello again, I'm in a cyber cafe downtown, next to Jackie's office while we wait for Emma to pick up Jackie's little girl Angie and bring her back. We are all going to the National Park - I've read it's a great way to see the animals of Kenya without going on an actual safari! The weather is lovely - warm and sometimes hot, but not too hot. I am supremely grateful for "wet ones", and the hand wash stuff - and tissues. The other day I sent a text message to Kevin and Omosh, friends from 07 and was delighted to hear from both of them. Kevin immediately joined us for a few minutes and we arranged to meet again on Friday afternoon. So Emma and I went out to Dandora very early ... read more

Wednesday September 16 Nairobi, Buru Buru We (Emma and I) are very slow moving in the morning. Toilet is of the squat variety and for now no running water, although we did have hydro this morning. I had arranged to meet my friend Alice in town at noon - but they were delayed so Emma and I went out to her brothers school for a meeting. The school is out past another suburb called Buru Buru but it was nice to take the matatu along Jogoo Rd. Our first matatu broke down so we got on another one. A few blocks later I hopped off as I thought Emma wanted to get out. After I hopped off, the matatu took off with Emma still on it. So there I am walking down the road by myself ... read more

I don't seem to get to the cyber cafe as easily as last time, but here I am today, well rested, well fed - on bread with plum jam, and half a Cadbury's Crisp. I must try again to bring some home with me. I tried last time, but ate them all before I could give them away! I was out to Dandora with Emma to meet her mum, also named Catherine. She is a lovely lady and I hope to be able to do something useful there. The children are wonderful, as always, and Emma was laughing when she realized the kids love to run up to me and say "How are you?" No marriage proposals yet, but give it time! Yesterday I managed to arrange a meeting with Alice and Titus, my friends from ... read more

Amsterdam to Nairobi I like Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. I was smart enough to ask about clearing customs to go have a smoke outside the airport and the flight attendant told me they have a smoking room in the airport. Even told me how to find it! Three hours wait, then flight to Nairobi. Cold again, thankful for the jacket. The lady beside me on the plane had a blanket and she snuggled under it for the whole flight. The lady beside her had a mobile phone/ipod that she watched a movie on. I think that's what I'll do next time. Arrived a bit early in Nairobi, and I was the first one (in economy) off the plane. As soon as I got off I was met by Jackie’s boss, who accompanied me through customs/immigration. Disappointed ... read more

My sister decided I wouldn't be warm enough on the flight, so we drove down to the store near the highway to get a kangaroo jacket. They didn’t have any, so I came home to relax a bit and do last minute stuff while she went to Zellers and then Walmart to buy a jacket. Kissed the cats and then drove to Toronto airport. Sent a text to my friends Jackie and Alice in the car and then left my phone with my sister. I'll use my friend Emma's extra phone when I get to Nairobi. Check in was neat - long line ups everywhere for KLM, but I saw a man standing next to a computer so I asked him what it was for. He asked me if I had an e-ticket and when I ... read more
