I'm a solo traveler who's looking for a warmer winter climate. Last year I gave myself permission to take the month of February off to go exploring in Florida. My guide book "The Best Tent Camping in Florida - a guide for car campers who hate RVs, concrete slabs, and loud portable stereos" (by Johnny Molloy, 4th edition, Menasha Ridge Press) has more places to offer, so I'm going exploring again this February.

Shelby and I have grown a little road weary… We spent our last week out (our 5th) in search of some more fresh water springs, those jewels that gush from the earth at 72 degrees. I can’t get enough of snorkeling; seeing that blue water, those green plants, and the colorful fish that live under the surface, is so exciting. Since this has been a personal writing retreat for me, I have been writing down conversations that take place with my traveling companion, Shelby the turtle. Our next discussion is about swimming. Some of our other topics have been: expectations, gratitude, wild dancing, wood, slow food, being brave, community, and solutions. Good stuff! Our low spirits have been due to the Florida sunshine – missing in action; it keeps hiding the farther north we drive. And, ... read more

Jewels of the Ocala Between Daytona on the East coast and Ocala in Florida’s midsection lie the jewels of the Ocala National Forest – springs, warm springs that flow out of the earth at 72 degrees Fahrenheit. When you are lucky, like I was today, the air temperature is 85 degrees, making it almost perfect for snorkeling in the springs. Last year I tried one of the 4 jewels, Alexander Springs; this year I was determined to try the others, Being a southern girl, I like warm water for swimming, so even water temps of 72 degrees is not warm enough. I learned that last year when it took me 45 minutes to ease myself into the spring. That year, my note-to-self was: “remember your mask and snorkel next time.” This year, not only did I ... read more

Fantastic Flamingo I have just spent 10 wonderful days on a personal writing retreat in sub-tropical paradise. I really hit pay dirt on my destination this time, Flamingo campground on the tip of the Florida peninsula (a world heritage site). Flamingo is one of 2 campgrounds in Everglades National Park. I thought it might be a real refuge (away from the madding crowds), and sure enough it was perfectly peaceful. From the van where I slept I had a fantastic view of the Florida Bay, hardly anyone is in the tent camping loop. The other 2 loops are much busier with RVs. The Bay is very shallow with lots of red mangroves all around. The water from Lake Okeechobee flows all the way through the lower part of the state, through limestone and mud, and a ... read more

Shelly and I celebrated our first week on-the-road yesterday. We toasted our cups to successfully arriving at Big Cypress National Preserve, drinking fresh Florida orange juice of course! We’re staying at Monument Lake campground, which seems to be a well-kept secret as not too many people are here. Winter is south Florida’s busy season so keeping away from crowds isn’t always easy. Today’s high temperature was 81 and the low was 65, YAY! The van, known to some as the Gypsy Outhouse, gracefully rumbled south toward warmth and good company. First, we visited Lizza and Ian in their nice apartment in North Decatur. They were wonderful hosts and tour guides. We cut daffodils from the yard (blooming in January?, perhaps a global warming perk!). About 2/3s of the way down the Gulf coast in Englewood, we ... read more
