I never imagined myself looking back at the past 6 months and wondering where they went, even though we've been doing that our entire lives. I went to Greece and was home before I could even understand I had actually left Canada. I did the same for Nicaragua, and for Spain and for England and Switzerland and Italy and France. None of those experiences were even longer than a month. And here I am today remembering the day I was accepted to go to Thailand and I looked at my future as if it was the only star in the sky. And now I look into the sky and see a full moon that is thinning and dimming and disappearing before my eyes to the point where I'm not even sure there was a full moon. ... read more

Mary Lasby's here Mark Purkey's here Jonathan Dufrense was here It seems like so many people have came here during these past 5 months. And today I only have one month left.. It is so hard to believe. Lots has been going on recently with so many people around that I haven't found the time to just sit down and write. So here are some quick updates: Annes friend Jonathan came for some quality time here- not too long maybe a week and bit in Mae Sot and he spent a week down south with Anne. I am pretty lucky in a way that I don't teach on thursday or friday because Jo and I rented motorbikes and went all around the area here. we went to waterfalls, a national park and just cruzed all over ... read more

Every year the vols have to leave the country around the middle of October to apply for a brand new visa. It just so happened that this years visa run, fell during the same time as our break in between school semesters. Usually everyone travels together to go to Loas because that is the fastest and cheapest way to go . This year everyone kind of decided to go in different directions. Barb and Meg went to Burma, Nat went to Malaysia, Anne met up with a buddy in Singapore and I peaced out to Vietnam. I remember booking my ticket the Friday before I left and being super excited. I had kind of waited last minute to decide where to go. We had company over at the time our neigbores- some young burmese woman and ... read more

I know I keep saying this, but i cannot believe how fast time goes by here. This week especially feels like it hasn't even arrived yet because it came and went by so fast.. I don't know where it's going so fast.. Yesterday i spent almost the entire day sleeping for some strange reason. Probably because I rarely sleep at all here and it's about time its catching up with me. But I slept maybe 16 hours of the day and then at night four of the volunteers went out to the Chicago house again.. maybe you remember from my blog post called chuck Norris counted to infinity.. twice. Well we went back there. This time the place was bumpin, there were a lot of people there- but unfortunately Opart wasn't around. I like this guy. ... read more

It just seems so strange to me: parents working, selling clothing, shoes, makeup, fried chicken feet and gizzards, the child asleep on the floor beside them, on a cardboard mat. Picture this child, sometimes a couple more, with untamed dogs running around, circling the hot plate in hopes of catching a small piece of grizzle that accidentally falls from the burner. Every day biking to school, I see children. Many are on their way to school but many are on their way to work or are already working. Early mornings and late evenings make a long hard day of work; but what is the alternative? That is the problem: these young Burmese kids are living a reality that means they do not have another choice. They had but two choices when their families decided to flee ... read more

Not to sound like a drama queen hypocondriact, but I think I have a serious sensitivity to mold. For those of you who know me pretty well, you were probably aware of the FOUR consecutive nasal/ sinus infections I had back to back during second semester. I like to think that I am not usually a sick person; i might not be in the best of shape but i'm fairly healthy. During second semseter at BU I had four nasal infections that antibiotics couldn't get rid of because I was living in a rat infested, rundown piece of garbage moldy shit whole thanks to my greasy land lord Carl. My house was literally made from carboard boxes that had been previously holding asbestos. The point is, There was mold in my house and that was the ... read more

Frig. I keep writing blog entries and they keep not saving, so when I come back to finish them they aren't there. Last Thursday the volunteers ( minus Natasha) hopped on a bus for 6 hours to travel to Chiang Mai, the biggest city in the northern part of Thailand. Then we waited an hour to jump on another 3 and a half hour bus to travel up to Chaing Rai. Heres the thing, all of us have tourist visas, but they are only good for 2 months, and then you have to renew them. In order to renew your visa and get another two months worth you have to leave the country, and then re-enter. This is where things get fun. Chiang Rai is not our final destination, but a stop over for the rest ... read more

I wish I could show you the stars in the sky- oh how I miss their clusters and isolations. it is a rare occasion to see the stars here because it is always cloudy and raining. Some might say that is a blessing because I have never noticed the shining stars like I did tonight. They brought me home and opened my eyes. I miss them, but i know in a couple months in the winter months I will see them again and when I stare up into the below zero sky, the warm breath that leaves my mouth and nose will frost in the air reminding me of all the clouds that forbid me from seeing the night time stars all to often here in Thailand. Scroll past this next paragraph if you don't want ... read more

I stepped in dog shit, with my bare foot today. Full. On. Dog shit, it squished between my toes and i didn't realize for like 2 seconds,...and then I said YACKKKKKKk OH MY GODD ... oh I forgot to mention that this was at the front of one of my classes. Let me explain. Lhe Bee is my second priority school; I teach grades 5,4 then 3's for 45 minutes each- monday, tuesday, wednesday. and like i've said in many of my other posts- dogs are rodents here. they are disgusting- flee bitten disease infested, muts that are neglected and rarely deomesticated- so they are also not trained.. and therefore take dumps in front of class rooms ( how did they get in- well most schools here run by the open concept idea- so classrooms are ... read more

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience…I will dispense this advice now. Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh nevermind; you will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded. But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked…. You’re not as fat as you imagine. Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing ... read more
